  • Generally speaking, the internal moisture of concrete is mainly distributed in inner part and concrete surface which is exposed are dned according to influence of temperature and humidity. So, the properties which are compressive strength, modular elasticity, and volume change are different at each part even in same concrete. This is because moisture distribution is changed according to the evaporation and move ment of moisture, exist in the inner porosity of concrete. Therefore, it is necessary that we investigate the properties of concrete according to moisture distribution. The purpose of this study is investigating correlation between the moisture content and mechanical properties in concrete. Compressive and tenslle strength decrease according to increasing moisture content, but modular elas ticity increase. Those increasing or decreasing ratio at drying ratio 100% (absolute dries) is as follows in comparative of drying ratio 0 % (saturated condition).tion).

  • With an objective of evolving quantitatively and qualitatively superior bivolitine silkworm hybrid of Bombyxmori L. for tropics with shorter larval duration without compromising on productivity traits, a breeding programme was initiated at this institute during 1997 by utilizing breeding resource material from the institutes Germplasm collection. The breed SD7 is characterized with plain larvae spinning white oval cocoons and SD12 is characterized by sex-limited larval markings spinning white dumb-bell cocoons. After fixation, these breeds along with other newly evolved breeds were subjected for hybrid evaluation in the laboratory. Based on the hybrid studies, the hybrid SD7${\times}$SD12 was selected and evaluated for one year comprising three major sea- sons (6 trials) of tropics viz., Pre-monsoon (characterized by high temperature, low humidity and without any rain fall), Monsoon (characterized by moderate temperature, heavy rain fall with high humidity) and post-monsoon season (characterized by low temperature and low humidity with frequent rain fall) to know the fluctuations in the larval duration. The evaluation studies indicated that the hybrid is having shorter larval duration with productive merits. The hybrid SD7${\times}$SD12 recorded survival percent of 92.74, shell weight of 46.7 cg, shell ratio % of 24.0 and filament length of 1,200 meters with a shorter larval duration of 24 hrs; when compared to productive hybrid CSR2${\times}$CSR5(control). The breeding methodologies and hybrids usefulness for tropics were discussed.

  • $AB'_{0.5}B"_{0.5}O_3$ type complex perovskite structures which have been reported as proton conductors over $600^{\circ}C$ were studied. The $AB'_{0.5}B"_{0.5}O_3$ type complex perovskite structure is known to be more easily synthesized and has better stability than normal $ABO_3$ perovskite structure. And it is stable at about $800^{\circ}C$ in the $CO_2$ atmosphere, whereas the $BaCeO_3$ perovskite is easily decomposed into carbonate. In addition, this $AB'_{0.5}B"_{0.5}O_3$ type complex perovskite structure could simply produce oxygen vacancies within their structure not by introducing additional doping oxides but by just controling the molar ratio of $B'^{+3}$ and $B"^{+5}$ metal ions in the B site. Hence it is easy to design the structure which shows highly sensitive electrical conductivity to humidity. In this study, the single phase boundary of $BaR_{0.5+x}Ta_{0.5-x}O_{3-{\delta}}$(R = rare earth) complex perovskite structures and it's phase stability were investigated with changes in composition, x. And the humidity dependance of electrical conductivity at different $P_{H2O}$ conditions was investigated.

  • Plant factory has drawn attention in many countries in the world due to capability of environmental control not only for better yield and quality, but also for increase in functional and medicinal components of the products. In this paper, an experimental plant factory was constructed for various tests under different environmental conditions, and the operations were evaluated. A production room was constructed with adiabatic materials with dimensions of $6,900{\times}3,000{\times}2,500$ mm ($L{\times}W{\times}H$). Four sets of $2,890{\times}600{\times}2,320$ mm ($L{\times}W{\times}H$) production frame unit, each with 9 light-installed beds and an aeroponic fertigation system, resulting in 36 beds, were prepared. Accuracy and response were evaluated for each environmental control component with and without crops. Air temperature, humidity, $CO_2$ concentration, light intensity, frequency, and duty ratio, fertigation rate and scheduling were controllable from a main control computer through wireless communication devices. When the plant factory was operated without crop condition, the response times were 8 minutes for change in temperature from 20 to $15^{\circ}C$ and 20 minutes from 15 to $20^{\circ}C$; 7 minutes for change in humidity from 40 to 65%; and 4 minutes for change in $CO_2$ concentration from 450 to 1000 ppm. When operated for 24 hours with crop cultivation; average, maximum, and minimum values of temperatures were 20.06, 20.8, and $18.8^{\circ}C$; humidity were 66.72, 69.37, and 63.73%; $CO_2$ concentrations were 1017, 1168, and 911 ppm, respectively. Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density was increased as the distance from the light source decreased, but variability was greater at shorter distances. Results of the study would provide useful information for efficient application of the plant factory and to investigate the optimum environment for crop growth through various experiments.

  • In this study, the characteristics of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5-10}$ concentrations were identified in two different functional areas including Chuncheon and Youngwol, Korea. Even though the anthropogenic emission rates of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ are approximately four times higher in Youngwol than in Chuncheon their atmospheric concentrations were statistically higher in Chuncheon. In Chuncheon, both $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations and the ratio of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ increased as relative humidity (RH) increased possibly because the inorganic and/or organic secondary aerosols were actively formed at high RH. This result was also supported by that $PM_{2.5}$ concentration was enhanced under the fog and mist conditions in Chuncheon. On the other hand, both $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5-10}$ concentrations clearly increased with the southerly winds blown from the cement production facility in Youngwol. In addition, high $PM_{2.5-10}$ concentrations were observed with high wind speed, low relative humidity, and high $NO_2$ concentrations in Youngwol, suggesting that $PM_{2.5-10}$ was generated through the physical process including crushing and packing procedures followed by resuspension from cement and lime factory.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the role of Silicon accumlated in rice plant under different conditions of light and humidity, using radioisotopes Ca-45, Mn-54, and P-32. This results obtained in are as follows; 1. Light effect is more severe in phosphate uptake by rice plant than is calcium. Amounts of phosphate uptake in light condition is six times more than in dark conditions, while that of calcium is double. 2. Change of relative humidity affects calcium absorption and transport from root to shoot. It seems not to be influenced in phosphate and manganese uptake by relative humidity. 3. More uptake of each element Ca-45, P-32, or Mn-54 was found in the rice plant applied with silicic acid. It is considered that there must be some relationship between silicon content and ion uptake in rice plant. 4. The transport ratio of nutrient from root to shoot shows a specific pattern that calcium is approximately 1.0 manganese 0.5 and phosphate 0.2 respectively.

  • [ $ZrO_2-TiO_2$ ]binary oxides with various Zr:Ti molar ratios were prepared by sol-gel method and Nafion$^{(R)}$/$ZrO_2-TiO_2$ composite membranes were fabricated for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) at high temperature and low humidity. Water uptake, Ion exchange capacity (IEC), and proton conductivity of Nafion$^{(R)}$/$ZrO_2-TiO_2$ composite membranes were characterized and these composite membranes were tested in a single cell at $120^{\circ}C$ with various relative humidity (R.H.) conditions. The obtained results were compared with the unmodified membranes (Nafion$^{(R)}$ 112 and Recast Nafion$^{(R)}$). A Nafion$^{(R)}$/$ZrO_2-TiO_2$ composite membrane with 1:3 of Zr:Ti molar ratio showed the highest performance. The performance showed 500 mW/$cm^2$ (0.499V) at $120^{\circ}C$, 50% R. H., and 2 atm.

  • During hot air drying of root vegetables such as radish and sweet potatoes, shrinkage and casehardening occurred, and thereby the quality change appeared. Therfore the hot air drying apparatus in which air temperature, relative humidity and air velocity could be controlled was designed, and the drying and shrinking characteristics of radish and sweet potatoes were studied. Also the external factors that affected these characteristics were investigated. The whole drying process of radish and sweet potatoes could be divided into four different drying rate periods, namely constant rate period, first falling rate period, second falling rate period (a) and (b). The shrinking rate curve consisted of four periods nearly corresponding to drying rate periods. The shrinking rate slowly increased in the constant rate period, rapidly increased in the first falling rate period, and reached the highest value in the early period of the second falling rate period. The surface shrinkage was greatly affected by the thickness of sample, relative humidity and initial moisture content. The shrinking ratio was increased with decreasing thickness and increasing relative humidity and initial moisture content.

  • Quality changes of citrus tangor(Citrus kiyomi) during storage by chitosan and calcium treatment and storage warehouse were investigated. Citrus fruits were treated with 2000-folds diluted iminoctadime-triacetate solution, and 1.5% chitosan with 0.5% CaC1$_2$solution, and were at 30$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr before storage. The citrus fruits of about 12 kg/26 L plastic container were stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ with 87% relative humidity. Decay ratio of citrus with precise temperature and humidity control were lower than the others during storage. Weight loss, moisture content of peel and flesh were decreased slowly during storage. 15 ∼ 18% of acid content were decreased on 120 days' storage. Vitamin C content were decreased rapidly during storage. 23 free amino acids were detected. Isoleucine and leucine were not detected, but alanine was detected only on stored citrus. Citrus fruits was kept well on its commodity quality for 3 month at 4$^{\circ}C$ with 87% relative humidity.

  • The purpose of this research is to absorb and remove sulfur dioxide existing in the air by using ion exchange non-woven fabric. So we found out very appropriate condition of anionic exchange fabric scrubber by measuring amount of SO$_2$ adsorption under the atmosphere that concentration, velocity, and humidity was 100∼200 ppm, 0.6∼1.0 m/sec, and 30∼90 RH%, respectively. Ion exchange capacity of ion exchanger showed the maximum value, 3.75 meq/g at pH 4, and adsorption equilibrium time was the maximum value, 30 h when gas velocity was 0.6 m/sec, moreover, at 80$\^{C}$, adsorption equilibrium time tended to decrease more than 10 h. When concentration was 200 ppm, while reaction speed between SO$_2$ and ligand of fibrous ion exchanger was getting faster, adsorption break point had a tendency to get faster as well. In addition, when relative humidity in the scrubber was 90%, adsorption efficiency was 7.6%/h that seemed to be 30% higher than 4.6%/h coming from the condition that relative humidity had been 30%, and it was totally absorbed under 5 wt% NaOH solution in 5 minutes.
