Effect of Functional Hanji Using Wood Ceramics on Indoor Humidity Control (우드세라믹을 첨가한 기능성 한지가 실내습도 조절에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to develop a new application field of traditional Hanji and obtain the basic data for producing functional Hanji using sawdust ceramics and rice-husk ceramics as an architectural material. The results measuring water vapor permeance and water vapor absorption for using window materials and wallpapers are as follows. Hanji wallpaper has good things in controlling indoor space comfortably. Particularly, ability of controlling humidity of Hanji wallpaper affects indoor space comfort and human health. In the case indoor humidity is higher than outdoor humidity, according to the addition of ceramics, Hanji wallpapers maintain the humidity by retaining water vapor molecules in the pores of ceramics. Thus the Hanji wallpapers with ceramics, in particular rice-husk ceramics, make it superior to non-ceramics Hanji wallpapers in maintaining the humidity indoors.

Fabrication of Humidity Control Ceramics from Drinking-Water Treatment Sludge and Onggi Soil

  • In this study, humidity control ceramics with good adsorption/desorption capabilities and high strength were fabricated from drinking-water treatment sludge (DWTS) and Onggi soil. The DWTS powder heat-treated at $800^{\circ}C$ and Onggi soil were mixed at weight ratios of 40:60, 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30 and fired at $800-1000^{\circ}C$. With increasing DWTS content, density and flexural strength increased. For the sample with a DWTS:Onggi soil weight ratio of 70:30, porosity and specific surface area decreased with increasing firing temperature, attributed to densification and grain growth at high firing temperatures. From the results obtained, a firing temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ is the optimum condition for fabricating humidity control ceramics with good adsorption/desorption capabilities and strength. The maximum adsorbed amount for the sample fired at $800^{\circ}C$ was $439g/m^2$.

Evaluation of Humidity Control Ceramic Paint Using Gypsum Binder

  • Active clay, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for humidity controlling ceramic boards. The specific area and the pore volume of active clay were higher than those of bentonite and zeolite. It was effective to add white cement as well as a retarding agent to control the setting time of the ceramic paint. As the amount of added porous materials increases, the specific surface area and total pore volume of ceramic paint increase, but the average pore diameter decreases. The addition of porous materials having a high specific area and a large pore volume improves the moisture absorptive and desorptive performance of the ceramic paint. Therefore, in this experiment, the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties were best when active clay was added. Also, as the added amount of porous materials increases, the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties improve. In this experiment, when 70 mass% of active clay was added to ceramic paint, the hygroscopicity was highest at about $80g/m^2$.

A Study on the Soluble Salt and Deterioration of Ceramics from Taean Shipwreck (태안 마도 출토 도자기의 염에 의한 손상상태 연구)

  • Ceramics from Taean shipwreck were studied to investigate the deterioration by soluble salts and desalination pattern according to each ceramic characterization. NaCl crystals were found as a crystal growth on the ceramic microstructure and deteriorated to push off the glaze layer of some Puncheong ware sample. As a result of monitoring the desalination pattern of ceramics for 74days, the earthenware sample with big pores and no glaze removed soluble salts so fast, but Puncheong ware and Whiteware samples removed lots of soluble salts slowly and continuously. Generally, it takes long time to remove soluble salts from porcelains, due to small pores and glaze, but the long-term desalination probably can cause the damage on the surface layer such like glaze. As some soluble salts still remains in the ceramic microstructures after desalination, it is very important to control and keep the relative humidity stable through the proper storage. There are various ceramic deterioration patterns by soluble salts. Therefore, it needs to select the desalination method of ceramics from shipwreck, considering the material characteristics and the production techniques.
