  • Three humic acids (HA) and one fulvic acid (FA) are extracted from soils of the Okch'on Basin (Koyesan, Yongkwang and Taejon), and are purified and characterized using $^1H,\;^{13}C$ NMR, and IR spectroscopic methods. The results are compared with one another and with commerical humic acid (Aldrich Co) and aquatic humic acid from Gorleben underground aquifer in Germany. The IR and $^1H\;and\;^{13}C$ NMR spectral features are found to be nearly identical, suggesting that humic substances formed in the Okch'on Basin have quite similar chemical properties. These humic substances from Okch'on Basin soils have undergone low degree of aromatic condensation and have high contents of aliphatic functionalities including carbohydrates.

  • The photodegradation of TCBs in humic acid solutions at pH 7 was evaluated under laboratory sunlight simulated irradiation for 8 and 42 days. The irradiation to TCBs in solution in the presence of humic acid produced trichlorophenols, dichlorophenols in addition to the minor photodegraded products such as dichlorobutadiene, dichlorobenzaldehyde and pentachlorobiphenyls. The formation of photodegradation products indicate that the excited singlet oxygen and solvated electrons play a major contributors to the photodegradation process.

  • 56.2% of Aldrich HA was recovered from water by XAD-8 and AGMP-50 procedure. With this method, 0.58mg/l of HA was determined in the water collected from irrigation reservoir near Tae Dok Science Town. For the removal of ash from Aldrich HA, centrifugation was simple, but as effective as dialysis. Neither centrifugation nor dialysis removed Na at all. Only with XAD-8 and AGMP-50 procedure, Na and ash were completely removed.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to examine whether the apparent photolysis with or without sensitizers [NaOH and humic acid (HA)] was prompted photodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in aqueous solution. Methods: PCBs photodegradation occurred using fluorescence black lamps at ${\lambda}_{max}=300nm$. PCB congeners were exposed in 10 ppm HA or 0.05N NaOH solutions, to investigate the decreasing profile of PCB concentration with time. The PCBs were then analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Reductive degradation profile of PCB congeners in the presence of both sensitizers under oxygen-saturated protic conditions was described using the wind-rose diagrams. Results: Use of HA or NaOH decreased PCB concentration with time in the dark and on irradiation, indicating that photolysis underwent through reductive dechlorination through energy transfer and possibly with reactive oxygens. The dechlorination was marked by a chromatographic shift, observed in the GC-MS plots. Therefore it is logical to assume that increasing the dose of sensitizers would increase the photodegradation rates of PCBs. The half-lives of pentachloro-PCB (penta-3) in 0.05N NaOH and 10 ppm HA were estimated at about 47 hours and 39 hours, respectively, under the same experimental conditions of photolysis. It was found that the rate of photolysis of pentachloro-PCB in aqueous solution followed apparent first-order kinetics compared to other congeners. Conclusion: Photochemical degradation (using 328 nm UV light) of penta- and hexa-PCBs in HA or alkaline solution is a viable method for pretreatment method. The results are helpful for the further comprehension of the reaction mechanism for photolytic dechlorination of PCBs in aquatic system.

  • The ability of benzothiadiazole (BTH) and/or humic acid (HA) used as seed soaking to induce systemic resistance against a pathogenic strain of Fusarium oxysporum was examined in four soybean cultivars under greenhouse conditions. Alone and in combination the inducers were able to protect soybean plants against damping-off and wilt diseases compared with check treatment. These results were confirmed under field conditions in two different locations (Minia and New Valley governorates). The tested treatments significantly reduced damping-off and wilt diseases and increased growth parameters, except the number of branches per plant and also increased seed yield. Application of BTH (0.25 g/L) + HA (4 g/L) was the most potent in this respect. Soybean seed soaking in BTH + HA produced the highest activities of the testes of oxidative enzymes followed by BTH in the four soybean cultivars. HA treatment resulted in the lowest increases of these oxidative enzymes. Similar results were obtained with total phenol but HA increased total phenol more than did BTH in all tested cultivars.

  • This study aimed at improving the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of HA. In this study, the Degradation of Humic Acid using Jeju Scoria Coated with $WO_3/TiO_2$ in the presence of UV irradiation was investigated as a function of different experimental condition : photocatalyst dosage, $Ca^{2+}\;and\;HCO_{3}_{-}$ addition and pH of the solution. Photodegradation efficiency increased with increasing photocatalyst dosage, the optimum catalyst dosage is 2.5 g/L and Photodegradation efficiency is maximized to $WO_3/TiO_2=3/7$. This indicates that $WO_3$ retains a much higher Lewis surface acidity than $TiO_2,\;and\;WO_3$ has a higher affinity for chemical species having unpaired electrons. The addtion of cation($Ca^{2+}$) in water increased the photodegradaion efficiency. But the addtion of $HCO_{3}^{-}$ ion in water decreased a photodegradation efficiency. Photodegradation efficiency increased with decreasing pH < pzc, the electrostatic repulsion between the HA and the surface of $TiO_2$ decreased.

  • Humic acid (HA) is known to consist of various kinds of polymeric organics, their detailed structures can vary depend on sample sources such as organic manure, composts, peat, and lignite brown coal, and largely exists in grassland soils. HA possesses diverse positive effects that not only increase plant growth but also improve soil fertility. Recently, we have manufactured a co-polymeric product of catechol and vanillic acid (CAVA) synthesized artificially, and found that CAVA as a HA mimic increases seed germination and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis. In this study, we examined whether HA or CAVA affects to seedling growth in alfalfa. Foliar application of HA or CAVA increased alfalfa seedling growth including aerial and in root parts. HA or CAVA dramatically enhanced size of leaf and root, whereas HA significantly displayed higher bioactivity than CAVA. Taken together, CAVA acts like as a HA mimic in alfalfa that could apply as an alternation supplement to enhance plant growth and productivity.

  • The anionic exchange polymer, poly(vinyl amine)(PVAm), was coated onto polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes by using 'salting-out' method. The effects of the fouling phenomena for these PVAm coated membranes were investigated using the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). The surface coating and the fouling phenomena were observed by the scanning electron microscopy. And the flux was measured for each 100 ppm of above foulant aqueous solution at the operating pressure, 2, 4, 8 bar. The PVAm-coated PA membranes showed somewhat fouling improvements and the fouling reduction was shown in the order of HA > SA > BSA, particularly HA case was distinct.

  • In greenhouse farming, a variety of humic acids have been applied to improve soil conditions and plant growth. However, it is still unclear that how humic acids combined with chemical fertilizers affect growth and quality of fruit vegetable crops. This study was conducted to determine the combination effect of humic acids and chemical fertilizers on the growth and fruit quality of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum MILL.) grown under greenhouse conditions. Three different formulation types of humic acid were used: liquid type A, liquid type B and solid type C. The tomato plants were grown in three treatment combination plots and in conventional fertilizer (CF) plot with recommended levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium: HA combined with CF (HA+CF), HB combined with CF (HB+CF) and HC combined with CF (HC+CF). For most of growth characteristics (i.e. leaf number, internode length, maximum leaf length, leaf width and chlorophyll contents) determined in this experiment, no significant differences were observed between all combination treatments and CF. However, integrated fruit qualities (i.e. averaged weight, sugar contents and acidity) were slightly improved in the humic acid combined with CF treatments when compared with CF alone treatment. No phytotoxicity was observed with humic acid treatments. However, further studies will probably be needed to use widely and safely these humic acids, in order to ensure a maximizing growth, fruit yield and quality of tomato.
