In this paper, a procedure of design and development of a child-sized humanoid robot is described. The design concept for a humanoid robot was proposed and the mechanism of the humanoid robot which is more than 1 meter tall was designed by using 3D design tools. By considering the lightweight of the robot, the hardware for the robot was designed for optimal performance. The frames and links of the robot designed by 3D design tools was manufactured through precision machining with the material which is light and have a good strength. The manufactured child-sized humanoid robot was experimented with basic motions applied inverse kinematics and balance control, and the performance of the motions were verified.

Nowadays, research on human-robot interaction has been getting increasing attention. In the research field of human-robot interaction, speech signal processing in particular is the source of much interest. In this paper, we report a speaker localization system with six microphones for a humanoid robot called MAHRU from KIST and propose a time delay of arrival (TDOA)-based feature matrix with its algorithm based on the minimum sum of absolute errors (MSAE) for sound source localization. The TDOA-based feature matrix is defined as a simple database matrix calculated from pairs of microphones installed on a humanoid robot. The proposed method, using the TDOA-based feature matrix and its algorithm based on MSAE, effortlessly localizes a sound source without any requirement for calculating approximate nonlinear equations. To verify the solid performance of our speaker localization system for a humanoid robot, we present various experimental results for the speech sources at all directions within 5 m distance and the height divided into three parts.

This paper deals with the real-time stable walking for a humanoid robot, ISHURO-II, on uneven terrain. A humanoid robot necessitates achieving posture stabilization since it has basic problems such as structural instability. In this paper, a stabilization algorithm is proposed using the ground reaction forces, which are measured using FSR (Force Sensing Resistor) sensors during walking, and the ground conditions are estimated from these data. From this information the robot selects the proper motion pattern and overcomes ground irregularities effectively. In order to generate the proper reaction under the various ground situations, a fuzzy algorithm is applied in finding the proper angle of the joint. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation and walking experiments on a 24-DOFs humanoid robot, ISHURO-II.
In this paper, we introduce a case study of developing a miniature humanoid robot that has 16 degrees of freedom and is able to perform statically stable walking. The developed humanoid robot is 37cm tall and weighs 1,200g. RC servo motors are used as actuators. The robot can walk forward and turn to any direction on even surface. It equipped with a small digital camera, so it can transmit vision data to a remote host computer via wireless modem. The robot can be operated in two modes; One is a remote-controlled mode, in which the robot behaves according to the command given by a human operator through the user-interface program running on a remote host computer, the other is a stand-alone mode, in which the robot behaves autonomously according to the pre-programmed strategy. The user-interface program also contains a robot graphic simulator that is used to produce and verify the robot's gait motion. In our walking algorithm, the ankle joint is mainly used lot balancing the robot. The experimental results shows that the developed robot can perform statically stable walking on even surface.

Robot mobility and intelligence become more important for robots to be used in various fields other than automation. The main purpose of providing mobility to a robot is to extend the robot's manipulability. In this paper, we introduce a small humanoid robot that can autonomously play golf as an example of incorporating robot intelligence, mobility, and manipulability. The robot has 12 degrees of freedom for legs and has various basic walking patterns. It can move to a desired position and change orientation by combining the basic waking patterns. The robot has a color CCD camera and can extract coordinates of the objects in the environments. The small humanoid robot has 8 degrees of freedom for arms and can play golf autonomously with two kinds of dexterous swing motions. Kinematic analysis of the robot arms, vision data processing for the recognition of the environments, algorithm for playing robotic golf have been performed or proposed. The experimental results show that the robot can play golf autonomously.

This paper deals with determination of motions of a humanoid robot using genetic algorithm. A humanoid robot has some problems of the structural instability basically. So, we have to consider the stable walking gait in gait planning. Besides, it is important to make the smoothly optimal gait for saving the electric power. A mobile robot has a battery to move autonomously. But a humanoid robot needs more electric power in order to drive many joints. So, if movements of walking joints don't maintain optimally, it is difficult for a robot to have working time for a long time. Also, if a gait trajectory doesn't have optimal state, the expected life span of joints tends to be decreased. To solve these problems, the genetic algorithm is employed to guarantee the optimal gait trajectory. The fitness functions in a genetic algorithm are introduced to find out optimal trajectory, which enables the robot to have the less reduced jerk of joints and get smooth movement. With these all process accomplished by a PC-based program, the optimal solution could be obtained from the simulation. In addition, we discuss the design consideration for the joint motion and distributed computation of the humanoid, ISHURO, and suggest its result such as the structure of the network and a disturbance observer.

Although human-sized bipedal humanoid robots have been developed as the ideal form of human-friendly robots, studies of humanoid robots from the user perspective and of actual interaction between humanoid robots and the public in daily environments are few. This paper presents a long-term public demonstration that encouraged interaction between a humanoid robot and unspecified individuals. We have collected a significant amount of subjective evaluation data from the public by performing a storytelling demonstration that enhanced people's empathy towards the robot. The evaluation model consists of the robot's human friendliness, which involves its impression on humans, interaction with humans, and imitation of human motions and the robot's human appearance which involves gender, age, height, and body type. This study shows that there is no significant difference in human-friendliness between gender groups (male and female), while there is a significant difference between age groups (children and adults). In human appearance, it appears that there is no significant difference between either gender groups or age groups, except for the case of the robot's height.
This paper deals with implementation of middleware using CAN(Controller Area Network) network and TCP/IP for real-time distributed control system of a humanoid robot. Existent system using CAN network is available. But, there is problems in extensibility and flexibility. In this raper, the new system using TCP/IP for solution and improvement of problems is proposed. The new system is applied to ISHURO-II, real-humanoid robot. The performance is verified through experiment.
For the efficient and accurate development of a biped humanoid robot, systematic humanoid development platform is a necessary component in building the development environment. The simulator is a significant tool to develop a biped humanoid robot. In this paper, we first present a method for constructing a humanoid simulator that can be easily applied to an actual humanoid. Easy transplantation into an actual humanoid increases the efficiency of simulator and the development speed. Systematic structure, closely modeling and prediction of an actual humanoid is a significant part of the simulator to set a goal. Using the simulator, we can predict the motion of an actual humanoid. The functions and the effectiveness of the developed simulator were evaluated through simulated motions and walks.

In this paper, a visual servoing control technique of humanoid robot arms is implemented for tracking a moving object. An embedded time-delayed controller is designed on an FPGA(Programmable field gate array) chip and implemented to control humanoid robot arms. The position of the moving object is detected by a stereo vision camera and converted to joint commands through the inverse kinematics. Then the robot arm performs visual servoing control to track a moving object in real time fashion. Experimental studies are conducted and results demonstrate the feasibility of the visual feedback control method for a moving object tracking task by the humanoid robot arms called the ROBOKER.
