Endothelium-derived Relaxing Factors of Small Resistance Arteries in Hypertension

  • Endothelium-derived relaxing factors (EDRFs), including nitric oxide (NO), prostacyclin ($PGI_2$), and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF), play pivotal roles in regulating vascular tone. Reduced EDRFs cause impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation, or endothelial dysfunction. Impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in response to acetylcholine (ACh) is consistently observed in conduit vessels in human patients and experimental animal models of hypertension. Because small resistance arteries are known to produce more than one type of EDRF, the mechanism(s) mediating endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in small resistance arteries may be different from that observed in conduit vessels under hypertensive conditions, where vasorelaxation is mainly dependent on NO. EDHF has been described as one of the principal mediators of endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in small resistance arteries in normotensive animals. Furthermore, EDHF appears to become the predominant endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation pathway when the endothelial NO synthase (NOS3)/NO pathway is absent, as in NOS3-knockout mice, whereas some studies have shown that the EDHF pathway is dysfunctional in experimental models of hypertension. This article reviews our current knowledge regarding EDRFs in small arteries under normotensive and hypertensive conditions.

Emission Prediction from Naval Ship Main Propulsive Diesel Engine under Steady Navigation (정속항해 시 함정 주 추진 디젤엔진의 배기가스 배출량 예측)

  • This study was focused on the estimations of air pollutants, such as PM(Particulate matters), SOx(Sulfur Oxides), $CO_2$(Carbon diOxides) and NOx(Nitrogen Oxides), from a diesel propulsion engine installed on a naval vessel. Legislative and regulatory actions for exhaust emissions from ships are being strengthened in international communities and national governments to protect human health and the environment. In this context, various technologies have been developed from all of the nations of the world to meet strict standards. These regulations are based on commercial ship applications and according to size, but are not suitable for military naval vessels, which have much different engine operating conditions and hull architectures. Additionally, there is no international emission control system for military ships. Emission factors have been updated for commercial ship types from work at various research institutes; however, it is difficult to develop emission factors for military vessels because of their characteristics. In this paper, exhaust emissions from diesel engines installed on naval vessels under steady navigation condition were estimated with emission inventory methodology applied to ocean going vessels using fuel-based methods and fuel sulfur content analysis.

  • Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal (KMST) statistics released in of 2019 indicated that most collision accidents involving small-size vessels with less than 20 gross-tonnage occur mainly due to operational carelessness, such as forward-looking negligence and unskilled vessel control. As an effective remedy, training and education for vessel operators are being strengthened to prevent accidents. However, collision accidents are increasing, and technical measures are continuously developed to reduce accidents caused by human factors. In this study, an avoidance algorithm and prototype of terminal-controller against collision between two nearby vessels was developed for implementation on relative navigation control by adopting WAVE telecommunication technology. Moreover, several sea trial tests were performed to verify the collision avoidance algorithm and control system using two fishing vessels for dif erent scenarios.

  • This study was carried to identify the component of Large Intestine Meridian Muscle in human, dividing into outer, middle, and inner part. Brachium and antebrachium were opened widely to demonstrate muscles, nerve, blood vessels and the others, displaying the inner structure of Large Intestine Meridian Muscle. We obtained the results as follows; 1. Meridian Muscle is composed of the muscle, nerve and blood vessels. 2. In human anatomy, it is present the difference between a term of nerve or blood vessels which control the muscle of Meridian Muscle and those which pass near by Meridian Muscle. 3.   • A radial artery pulse wave is well known as a good mans to diagnose human body condition in th field of Chinese medical science. Information about constitution as well as organs can be obtained by detecting the artery pulse wave. Recently, the information about the human body constitution may be utilized in accelerating the recovery process of the patient on the basis of comprehensive diagnosis. A radial artery pulse wave is considered as one of promising means in examining the human body constitution. Since the examination has been conducted by the feeling of finger, the diagnosis may occasionally have uncertainty or fatal error. In this paper, a new measuring system is suggested and developed to examine the pattern of a pulse wave correctly. The system is composed of four pressure vessels, pressure sensors and air supplying pumps. One of them is utilized for appropriately pressing the radial artery, three of them for detecting pressure change in several mmHg level. The detected data is shown and discussed.

  • Human factors have been considered the primary reason of marine accidents. Especially, the collision between vessels is mostly mused by human behavior. However, there have not been many researches to clarify the reason of marine accidents mused by human factors quantitatively. In order to understand human factors and to enhance safe navigation systematically, using a full mission ship-handling simulator, we've investigated the characteristics of avoiding behavior taken by mariners. Further in order to apply the characteristics more widely and effectively, it's necessary to formulate the standard behavior for ship-handling in the condition of collision avoidance. Is this study, therefore, we intended to propose the concept to model the mariner's standard behavior on the handling of collision avoidance as the first step. As a result, we confirmed the contents of information processing in ship-handling that mariner's generally taking to avoid collision.

  • As the blood flow characteristics have been recognized to be closely related to various cardiovascular diseases, it is very important to predict them accurate enough in an efficient way. Thus, this paper proposes a one-dimensional spectral finite element model for the human blood vessels. The spectral finite element model is formulated in the frequency-domain by using the exact frequency dependent shape functions and applied to an ascending aorta.

  • Almost of all the impediments to enchancing ship safety and preventing vessel-source marine pollution arise from the interaction between direct and indirect factors. The direct factors come from human errores and failure in complince with the international convention standards for the operation of vessels. The indirect factors derive from the will and attitudes of the countries taking little responsibilities with appropriate seriousness for policing their fleets. By focusing in these aspects, this paper intends to propose a new international regime to improve the implementation capability of national maritime administration of each member government of IMO(International Maritime Organization).
