Knowledge-based services are largely dependent upon human-driven works. Therefore, considering human characteristics is required when modeling processes for knowledge-based services. As an emerging technology for Business Process Management, Human Interaction Management and its supportive process management can be an alternative to deal with human-driven processes. However, current HIM does not suggest concrete method for modeling conditions that are essential to realize supportive process management. And the condition modeling of HumanEdj, the only HIM software implemented, reveals the problem of complexity. As a solution, this paper suggests a fact-oriented ontological approach to process modeling. The approach uses human-friendly form of facts for condition modeling.
Applying human engineering simulation to analyzing work capability and movements of operators during manufacturing is highly demanded. However, difficulty in modeling digital human required for simulation makes engineers to be reluctant to utilize human simulation for their tasks. This paper addresses such problem on human engineering simulation by developing the technology to automatize human modeling with multiple Kinects at different depths. The Kinects enable us to acquire the movements of digital human which are essential data for implementing human engineering simulation. In this paper, we present a system for modeling automation of digital human. Especially, the system provides a way of generating the digital model of workers' movement and position using multiple Kinects which cannot be generated by single Kinect. Lastly, we verify the effects of the developed system in terms of modeling time and accuracy by applying the system to four different scenarios. In conclusion, the proposed system makes it possible to generate the digital human model easily and reduce costs and time for human engineering simulation.
Recently, the evolutionary study of human psychology and behavior has undergone rapid growth, diversifying into a few distinct sub-disciplines. One fundamental issue over which researchers in Human Behavioral Ecology and Evolutionary Psychology (EP) have different views is the role of formal optimality modeling for making hypotheses and deriving predictions about human adaptations. The study of EP typically rests on informal inferences and rarely uses optimality modeling, a strategy which human behavioral ecologists have severely criticized. Here I argue that EP researchers have every reason to make extensive use of optimality modeling as its research method. I show that optimality modeling can play an integral role in identifying the functional organization of human psychological adaptations.
Modeling and simulation of human-involved complex systems pose challenges to representing human decision makings into logical systems because of the nondeterministic and dynamic nature of human behaviors. In modeling perspectives, human's activities in systems can increase uncertainty and complexity, because he or she can potentially access all other resources within the system and change the system states. To address all of these human involvements in the system, this research suggests applying the Finite State Automata (FSA)-based formal modeling of human-involved systems that incorporates the ecological concept of affordances to an evacuation simulation, so that human behavioral patterns under urgent and dynamic emergency situations can be considered in the real-time simulation. The proposed simulation methodologies were interpreted using the warehouse fire evacuation simulation to clarify the applicability of the proposed methodology. This research is expected to merge system engineering technologies and human factors, and come out to the new predictive modeling methodology for disaster simulations. This research can be applied to a variety of applications such as building layout designs and building access control systems for emergency situations.
Recently, human body modeling with muscle deformation has become an attractive research area in computer animation. There are many modeling tools available for solids such as mechanical part. However, there are many limitations of these conventional methods in modeling flexible objects with delicate motions and shapes such as human bodies. In this paper we present a new modeling technique for human body with muscle deformation. Each muscle is represented as a generalized cylinder and its shape deformation is computed using simple algorithm. The human body is a union of muscles, bones, organs, etc. The modeling data are obtained from the information on the human anatomy. To demonstrate the feasibility of our method, we model several arm muscles and simulate the skin deformation. As a result we have obtained a realistic shape deformation.
This paper presents an application of intelligent modeling method to manual control system with human operator. Human operator as a part of controller is difficult to be modeled because of changes in individual characteristics and operation environment. So in these situation, a fuzzy model developed relying on the expert's experiences or trial and error may not be acceptable. To supplement the fuzzy model block, a neural network based modeling error compensator is incorporated. The feasibility of the present fuzzy-neural modeling scheme has been investigated for the real human based target tracking system.
In this study digital human models of ship construction tasks using modeling & simulation were constructed and human models' activities through human activity analysis were evaluated. Human Factors experts analyzed the actual workers' tasks using the same technique used in human activity analysis at the same time. The main objective of this study is to check a possibility of applying digital human modeling technique to ship construction tasks that are mostly non-standardized(not uniformed) whereas most applications of digital human modeling technique have been applied to standardized tasks. We evaluated postures of both real workers and digital humans by RULA. It turned out that the final scores of RULA evaluation on real workers are the same as the RULA scores for digital humans. However, there were differences of RULA detail scores between real workers and digital humans in the several processes related with the wrist twist and deviations. Those differences are considered to be resulted from the error in the on-site measuring worker's body dimension which could be reduced by accurate tools to correct data for body dimension and digital real drawings for facilities. The results showed possibility of application of digital human modeling and ergonomic analysis on informal work operations as well as formal operations in the shipbuilding industry.
Human can generate various posture and motion with nearly 350 muscle pairs. From the viewpoint of mechanisms, the human skeleton mechanism represents great kinematic and dynamical complexity. Physical and behavioral fidelity of human motion requires dynamically accurate modeling and controling. This paper describes a mathematical modeling, and dynamic simulation of human body. The human dynamic model is simplified as a rigid body consisting of 18 actuated degrees of freedom for the real time computation. Complex kinematic chain of human body is partitioned as 6 serial kinematic chains that is, left arm, right arm, support leg, free leg, body, and head. Modeling is developed based on Newton-Euler formulation. The validity of proposed dynamic model, which represents mathematically high order differential equation, is verified through the dynamic simulation.

Human action recognition is used in areas such as surveillance, entertainment, and healthcare. This paper proposes a system to recognize both single and continuous human actions from monocular video sequences, based on 3D human modeling and cyclic hidden Markov models (CHMMs). First, for each frame in a monocular video sequence, the 3D coordinates of joints belonging to a human object, through actions of multiple cycles, are extracted using 3D human modeling techniques. The 3D coordinates are then converted into a set of geometrical relational features (GRFs) for dimensionality reduction and discrimination increase. For further dimensionality reduction, k-means clustering is applied to the GRFs to generate clustered feature vectors. These vectors are used to train CHMMs separately for different types of actions, based on the Baum-Welch re-estimation algorithm. For recognition of continuous actions that are concatenated from several distinct types of actions, a designed graphical model is used to systematically concatenate different separately trained CHMMs. The experimental results show the effective performance of our proposed system in both single and continuous action recognition problems.
