  • This present study proposed a newly developed test method to evaluate the dexterity and mobility of a firefighter's protective gloves. The first step evaluated the mobility and dexterity of the current type of fire protective gloves and three new types of protective gloves using Don-doff test, ASTM dexterity, Minnesota dexterity, Bennett hand tool test, and ASTM torque test. Three firefighters ($47.3{\pm}5.0yr$ in age, $178.6{\pm}2.9cm$ in height) participated in a series of experiments. The second step was to design and suggest an integrated test method based on the results of the first experiment. As a result of the first experiment, we concluded that 1) the mobility and dexterity tests for firefighting gloves should include both wet and dry tests, 2) The three kinds of dexterity tests could be integrated into one test, and 3) The don-doff test and the torque test should be independent from the newly developed integrated test. In summary, we suggested a simplified test method that combined ASTM dexterity, Minnesota dexterity, and Bennett hand tool test. The integrated system can reduce total time spent on dexterity tests and improve the validity of the test in terms of firefighters' manual work.

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the constraints that are normally experienced before moving in the context of the household characteristics of households that had recently moved to newly-built apartments. The data for the analysis was collected through a self-administered questionnaire from July 1, 2008 to August 10, 2008. The sample consisted of 251 households in Ulsan living in an apartment complex who had moved within a year. The data from the sample was analyzed by descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and analysis of variance with Duncan's multiple range tests. The results are as follows. The constraints were categorized into information gathering, attractive housing characteristics, expectations of residential mobility, housing development and policies, and resources. Overall, the constraints did not have a huge impact on the performance of the residential mobility of the sample households. Resources, however, were the most influential factors among the five constraints followed by attractive housing characteristics, information gathering, etc. The constraints varied based on the demographic characteristics, such as the household size, duration of marriage, age of the household head, and the socio-economic characteristics, such as the education level of the household head, household income, and the number of mobility. As the number of family members increased, the age of the household head went up, or the level of education went down, the constraints on information gathering were affected in terms of performing residential mobility. Households with a middle aged head with a professional occupation were more constrained by the attractive characteristics of the housing. The impact of the resources related constraints was significantly different based on the number of family members, marriage duration, and the household head's age and occupation, and the number of mobility.

  • This study was performed to understand the behavior of protein mobility and intensity of enzymatic hydrolysis according to crosslinking of sodium caseinate, whey protein isolate, skim milk and whole milk powders with or without transglutaminase (TGase, w/w = 200 : 1) at $38^{\circ}C$. Whey protein was limited to crosslinking and skim milk was relatively more increased in high molecular polymer than whole milk. The degree of crosslinking decreased in the order of sodium caseinate>skim milk>whole milk>whey protein isolate. The SDS-PAGE results indicated that main bands of TGase treated samples had a high mobility and formed bands of molecular weights below 15 kDa by hydrolysis with pepsin after 10 min of reaction time. However, ${\beta}-lactoglobulin$ showed remarkable stability against pepsin hydrolysis treated with and without TGase. The high molecular polymers were easily hydrolyzed with digestive enzymes in vitro experiment. These results suggested that novel dairy products using TGase would have no special digestive problem in human body.

  • Objectives : This study was undertaken to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity of the extract of Chilgitang herb-acupuncture solution (CHAS). Methods : The radical scavenging capacity was tested by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase system, DCFH-DA assay, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite generating system. In addition, antioxidant activity on copper and AAPH mediated human low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation was measured by using TBARS assay and relative electrophoretic mobility assay. The amount of total phenolic compounds was assayed by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Results : CHAS revealed a potent scavenging activity on DPPH radical(82%), superoxide anions(73%), hydroxyl radical(63%), nitric oxide (99%) and peroxynitrite (99%). Moreover, CHAS showed a strong inhibitory effect (59%) on $FeCl_2$-ascorbic acid induced lipid peroxidation of rat liver homogenate. CHAS also markedly inhibited copper(81%) and AAPH(56%)-mediated LDL oxidation, and effectively suppressed the electrophoretic mobility during exposure of human LDL to copper ions. CHAS (82 mg/g) contained higher concentration of total phenolic compounds than that of water extract (45 mg/g) obtained from Chilgitang. Conclusions : These results indicate that CHAS may protect against ROS- or RNS involved diseases, including cardiovascular diseases.

  • Proto-oncogene human cervical cancer oncogene (HCCR) functions as a negative regulator of p53 and contributes to tumorigenesis in various human tissues. However, it is unknown how HCCR contributes to the cellular and biochemical mechanisms of human tumorigenesis. In this study, we showed how the expression of HCCR is modulated. The luciferase activity assay indicated that the HCCR 5'-flanking region at positions -370 to -406 plays an important role in the promoter activity. Computational analysis of this region identified one consensus sequence for the TG-interacting factor (TGIF) located at -390 to -366 (TG). Mobility shift assays (EMSA) revealed that nuclear proteins from K562 bind to the TG site, but not to the mutated TG site. The reporter activity assay with promoter constructs carrying mutated TGIF sequences pGL3-mTGIF significantly increased reporter activities compared to wild type constructs pGL3-$406{\sim}+30$. In this study, we characterized the HCCR promoter and found that HCCR expression was partially regulated by the transcription repressor TGIF, which bound the promoter at positions -390 to -366.

  • Background In prosthesis-based breast reconstruction patients, the drain tends to be kept in place longer than in patients who undergo only mastectomy. Postoperative arm exercise also increases the drainage volume. However, to preserve shoulder function, early exercise is recommended. In this study, we investigated the effect of early exercise on the total drainage volume and drain duration in these patients. Methods We designed a prospective randomized trial involving 56 patients who underwent immediate breast reconstruction following mastectomy using tissue expanders. In each group, the patients were randomized either to perform early arm exercises using specific shoulder movement guidelines 2 days after surgery or to restrict arm movement above the shoulder height until drain removal. The drain duration and the total amount of drainage were the primary endpoints. Results There were no significant differences in age, height, weight, body mass index, or mastectomy specimen weight between the two groups. The total amount of drainage was 1,497 mL in the early exercise group and 1,336 mL in the exercise restriction group. The duration until complete removal of the drains was 19.71 days in the early exercise group and 17.11 days in the exercise restriction group. Conclusions Exercise restriction after breast reconstruction did not lead to a significant difference in the drainage volume or the average time until drain removal. Thus, early exercise is recommended for improved shoulder mobility postoperatively. More long-term studies are needed to determine the effect of early exercise on shoulder mobility in prosthesis-based breast reconstruction patients.

  • The development of multimedia applications has followed the development of high-speed networks. By improving the performance of mobile devices, it is possible to provide high-transfer-speed broadband and seamless mobile multicasting services between indoor and outdoor environments. Multicasting services support efficient group communications. However, mobile multicasting services have two constraints: tunnel convergence and handoff latency. In order to solve these problems, many protocols and handoff methods have been studied. In this paper, we propose inter local mobility anchor (inter-LMA) optimized handoff model for mobile multicasting services in proxy mobility IPv6 based (PMIPv6-based) networks. The proposed model removes the tunnel convergence issue and reduces the router processing costs. Further, it the proposed model allows for the execution of fast handoff operations with adaptive transmission mechanisms. In addition, the proposed scheme exhibits low packet delivery costs and handoff latency in comparison with existing schemes and ensures fast handoff when moving the inter-LMA domain.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate performances of mobile personal robots. A set of performance measures is proposed and the corresponding evaluation methods are developed. Different from industrial manipulators, personal robots need to be evaluated with its mobility, navigation, task and intelligent performance in environments where human beings exist. The proposed performance measures are composed of measures for mobility including vibration, repeatability, path accuracy and so on, as well as measures for navigation performance including wall following, overcoming doorsill, obstacle avoidance and localization. But task and intelligent behavior performances such as cleaning capability and high-level decision-making are not considered in this paper. To measure the proposed performances through a series of tests, we designed a test environment and developed measurement systems including a 3D Laser tracking system, a vision monitoring system and a vibration measurement system. We measured the proposed performances with a mobile robot to show the result as an example. The developed systems, which are installed at Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, are going to be used for many robot companies in Korea.

  • This study was designed to develop air force mechanic parka, evaluate it, and ultimately provide functionally superior parka to the air force. The development process was 1) conducting a survey, 2) identifying problems and shortcomings of currently-supplied parkas, and 3) improving the design, pattern and materials. The newly-developed parkas were evaluated in terms of their ease of fit, clothing mobility, and insulation. Ease of fit was evaluated by subjects' sensory tests, and clothing mobility was by fitness-for-motion tests and range-of-motion tests using a Goniometer. Evaluation on insulation was conducted by thermal manikins. Findings of this study were as follows: 1. In the subjective evaluation on clothing mobility, new parkas were considered to have sufficient ease of fit while previous ones scored much lower, confirming the improvement of the new version. 2. Both subjective tests and ROM measurements on fitness for motion verified the superiority of the new parkas. 3. Insulation tests found that although insulation capability of newly-developed parkas was at a similar level to those of the previous ones, their insulation capability per unit weight was superior, demonstrating that new parkas were better at blocking heat conduction. When making changes in parka patterns and designs to enhance the mobility, it was necessary to maintain the insulation function. The new parkas developed by this study was verified to be superior to the previous ones in their insulation and clothing mobility.
