  • Seaweeds are a potential source of minerals, essential amino acids, fatty acids, proteins, and various bioactive compounds such as antioxidants. The higher water content of seaweeds reduces the shelf life and this requires the appropriate drying method. The drying conditions play a major role in the conservation of nutrient composition in dried seaweeds. In recent years, the seaweed industry has used many different drying methods with advantages and limitations. Hybrid hot-water Goodle dryer (HHGD) which is a special dryer mixed with hot-water and a Korean traditional heating system (Goodlejang) might be a solution to avoid these limitations. The present study evaluated the effect of drying conditions in HHGD on nutrient composition and bioactivities of brown seaweeds. Moreover, freeze-dryer (FD) and HHGD were employed in this study to compare the dried outputs obtained from four brown seaweed species. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of the hybrid hot-water Goodle drying method (HHGDM) on the nutritional composition and antioxidant activity of dried seaweeds. AOAC standard methods were used to analyze the proximate composition of dried samples and their 70% ethanol extract. The intracellular and extracellular antioxidant activities were evaluated using Vero cells and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer respectively. High performance liquid chromatography, apoptotic body formation, and in-vivo experiments were used for further confirmation of the quality of dried output. The proximate composition results obtained from drying in HHGD and FD did not exhibit any significant difference. Moreover, the seaweed extracts from the dried seaweeds by HHGD and FD dryings were also not different and both significantly down-regulated in-vivo and in-vitro oxidative stress. Furthermore, the high performance liquid chromatography results revealed that the two dryers did not make the major peaks different in the chromatograms. Freeze-drying method (FDM) provides elevated quality for dried output, but there are limitations such as high cost and low capacity. The results from a novel HHGD did not provide any significant difference with the results in FD and expressed a potential to avoid the limitations in FD. Overall, these findings solidified the applicability of HHGD over FD.

  • The objective of this study was to increase the generating efficiency of concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) by using hybrid solar tracking. Further, the proposed system was demonstrated to have the ability to extract thermal energy from a concentrated photovoltaic system by using thermal absorbers containing heat pipe, which could then be used for a heating system or hot-water supply. The average electrical efficiency was 16 during the day, and the average thermal efficiency was 62. Therefore, this system demonstrated a total efficiency (electrical thermal) of 78. All the processes, i.e., tracking of the sun, calculation of the sun's position, reinstatement of the heating device toward the east for tracking on the next day, and system shutdown, were programmed using Simulink. A parametric analysis of the heat pipe, concentration ratio, and inlet velocity was also performed in terms of the operating temperature of the CPV and the outlet temperature. The simulation and experimental results for the thermal absorber were found to be in good agreement.

  • In order to achieve high efficiency of energy use and environment-friendly architectural design, various loads such as cooling, heating and hot water required by the building sector must be accurately predicted. Many studies used dynamic simulation tool to evaluate and analyze building energy performance. However, there are few studies on the comparative analysis of load results by each simulation and the evaluation of simulation characteristics and functions. In this study, the cooling, heating loads and energy demand of the buildings were evaluated using three dynamic simulations for the building with the same input conditions, and the characteristics of each simulation were compared and analyzed through the results. As a result of simulation comparative analysis, cooling, heating load and energy demand was lowest in square type and north-south direction conditions.

  • In this study, the generation efficiency of the limited area of a concentrator solar cell was increased by using a solar concentrator and a tracking device. Heat generated by the solar cell was collected using a thermal absorber for supplying hot water or heating. Thus, the concentrator solar cell system provided electricity and heat simultaneously. Tracking of the sun by detecting the sun's position, repositioning of heating device towards the east after sunset, and shutting down of system after sunset were successfully implemented using an illuminance sensor (CdS) and Simulink, a commercial software package. We performed parametric analysis of the velocity, fin installation, and entrance location with respect to the operating temperature of the concentrator solar cell. A heat transfer simulation model was developed for comparing the actual temperature profiles of the concentrator solar cell and thermal absorber, and good agreement was found between the results of the simulations and the experiments.

  • Residential buildings account for a significant portion of the total building-energy usage in Korea, and a variety of research studies on the domestic boiler have therefore been carried out; however, most of these studies examined the boiler itself, whereby the part-load ratio characteristics and the corresponding gas-energy consumption patterns were not analyzed. In this study, the part-load ratio and operating characteristics of a domestic gas boiler were analyzed within a residential building equipped with a radiant floor-heating system; in addition, the energy consumption between condensing and conventional boilers was comparatively analyzed. Our results show that significant portions of the total operating hours, heating load, and energy consumption are in the part-load ratio range of 0 through 40%, whereby the energy consumption was significantly affected by the boiler efficiency under low part-load conditions. These results indicate that the part-load operation of a boiler is an important factor in residential buildings; furthermore, replacing a conventional boiler with a condensing boiler can reduce annual gas-energy usage by more than 20%.

  • In this study, to improve the accuracy of forecast of heat demand in the district heating system, this study applied heat demand performance among the main factors of district heating demand forecast in Pankyo area as the heat sales information of the user facility instead of existing heat source facility heat supply information, and compared the existing method with the accuracy based on the actual value. As a result of comparing the difference of the forecasts values of the existing and changed methods based on the performance values over the one week (2018.01.08 ~ 01.14) during the hot water peak, the relative error decreased from 7% to 3% The relative error between the existing and revised forecasts was 9% and 4%, respectively, for the five-month cumulative heat demand from February to February 2018, Also, in case of the weekend where the demand of heat is differentiated, the relative error of the forecasts value is consistently reduced from 10% to 5%.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the objective deterioration grades and evaluation criteria of building equipment system of educational facilities available for reasonable maintenance and remodeling of them. For the purpose of it, the actual conditions of building equipment systems of the 148 buildings of 84 middle and high schools in Seoul 20 years after construction are investigated and surveyed through one-on-one interviews and questionnaires. And, deterioration grades of them are estimated by the evaluation criteria which is proposed in this study. As a result of this study, the 10 deterioration grades and the 4 evaluation criteria of the 6 performances of building equipment system, which are heating and cooling, water supply and drainage, hot water supply and electrical power performance, are suggested. And, as a result of the survey, it showed that 24% of the investigated school buildings were estimated C grade which needs partial remodelling, and 51% of the school buildings were estimated D grade which needs extensive remodelling. And, 25% of the school buildings were estimated E grade which needs overall remodelling or alteration of building equipment system.

  • In order to prevent the environmental pollution, the dryers are commonly used to treat sludge that one of sewages is polluting the quality of water. Generally, the drying method is various as to the property of material and use. Rotary dryer is a good apparatus to treat them. The rotary dryer is the way that is to make substance transmission and heating using hot air between sludge particles and heated gas. In this paper, we performed a numerical analysis of the inner air flow of the ANDRICH type dryer through the changing rotational speed from 3rpm to 10rpm. A PIV can be applied to research a inner flow of ANDRICH type dryer.
