We investigated the characteristics of air-and vacuum-drying heated by hot plates for 8~14cm-diameter logs or 6~12cm-thick pillars of Pinus koraiensis. And we evaluated the effects of longitudinal kerf and vacuum drying heated by hot plates. The vacuum drying times from green to 10.9~18.6% MC were 15 days, and these times were one-fifth compared to the air-drying times. The longitudinal kerfing had no significant, effect on drying rates during both air-drying and vacuum drying. But drying defects such as surface checks and V-shaped cracks were effectively prevented during air-drying and vacuum drying by longitudinal kerfing. The vacuum drying was more advantageous than air-drying for preventing of surface checks, end checks and V-shaped cracks, and especially, the vacuum dried pillars with longitudinal kerf were almost free from drying defects. In accelerated weathering conditions the resin did not exude for all specimens.

The analysis results of the temperature distribution and deformation at the PV cell with a thickness of $200{\mu}m$ according to hot-air temperature at the soldering process of a PV cell and ribbon tend to agree somewhat with the experimental measured values. The best result of the electrical efficiency appears in the module soldered at a hot-air temperature of $390^{\circ}C$. An analysis of the soldering PV cell with a thickness of $150{\mu}m$ at a hot-air temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ confirmed that the maximum deformation was approximately 5.9mm. As the temperature of hot air is set to decrease, the deformation is reduced and it is predicted that the electrical efficiency can be improved.
Two types of powdered chungkookjang, were prepared by a hot air-drying process, and the freeze-drying, and composition and aroma patterns were examined. The fresh chungkookjang was composed of 53.8% moisture, while the hot air-dried and freeze-dried powdered chungkookjang contained 5.2% moisture, $39.3{\sim}39.4%$ crude protein, $18.6{\sim}18.7%$ crude lipid, $4.7{\sim}5.0%$ crude ash, and $31.7{\sim}32.2%$ carbohydrate. The pH of the each powered chungkookjang was similar, ranging from 6.5 to 6.7. The freeze-dried powdered chungkookjang showed the highest lightness (67.30), yellowness (59.37) while the highest redness (43.1) was observed in the hot air-dried chungkookjang. Each chungkookjang was analysed by an electronic nose with metal oxide 12 sensors and SPME-GC/MS. The response by the electronic nose was analysed by principal component analysis (PCA). The proportion of the first principal component was 90.47%, suggesting that each aroma pattern of the prepared chungkookjang was discriminated. SPME-GC/MS was used to identify the pyrazines. The percentage of pyrazines observed in the fresh chungkookjang, freeze-dried powdered chungkookjang, and hot air-dried powdered chungkookjang was 6.6, 3.8 and 15.9%, respectively. A higher overall preference was obtained from the hot air-dried powdered chungkookjang than with the freeze-dried powdered chungkookjang.
The principal objective of this study was to assess the anti oxidative activities of Petasites japonicus against oxidative stress in bovine brain tissue. Petasites japonicus is found with a relatively widespread distribution, and is cultivated as a culinary vegetable in Korea. Petasites japonicus samples were dried either by freeze-drying or by hot air-convection drying ($80^{\circ}C$), then evaluated for their anti oxidative activity by measuring 1-dipheny-1,2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, and by measuring thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) in brain homogenates subjected to $Fe^{2+}$-mediated lipids with or without the addition of botanical extract. Hot air convection-drying resulted in a slight increase in the extraction yield as compared with freeze-drying. However, total phenol and flavonoid contents in freeze-dried Petasites japonicas were significantly higher than those of hot air convection-drying. Freeze-drying increased the free radical scavenging activity of Petasites japonicas, leaves, and stems by 52.6, 28.6, and 248.0%, as compared with hot air convection-drying. Additionally, the $IC_{50}$ values measured by TBARS in hot air convection-dried Petasites japonicas, leaves, and stems were increased by 36.0, 31.6, and 15.9%, as compared to those of freeze-drying. Although anti oxidative activity was reduced slightly by heat processing in Petasites japonicas, freeze-drying for each portion of Petasites japonicus was the most appropriate for use as a functional food and pharmaceutical material.
Hot air sparging is a groundwater remediation technique, in which organic contaminants volatilized into hot air from the saturated to vadose zone. In the laboratory diesel (10,000 mg TPH/kg) was spiked in contaminated saturated aquifer soil. The hot air ($34.9{\pm}2.7^{\circ}C$) was injected in intermittent (Q=1,500 mL/min, 10 minute injection and 10 minute idle) modes. We performed microcosm tests using the groundwater samples to assess TPH reductive remediation activity. For Terminal-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of eubacterial communities in sludge of wastewater treatment plants and soil of experiment site, the 16S rDNA was amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) from the sludge and the soil. The obtained 16S rDNA fragments were digested with Msp I and separated by electrophoresis gel. We found various sequence types for hot air sparging experiment with sludge soil samples that were closely related to Bacillus (149 bp, Firmicutes), Methlobacterium (149 bp, Euryarchaeotes), Pseudomonas (492 bp, ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria), etc., in the clone library. In this study we find that TPH-water was reduced to 78.9% of the initial value in this experiment aquifer. The results of the present study suggests that T-RFLP method may be applied as a useful tool for the monitoring in the TPH contaminated soil fate of microorganisms in natural microbial community.
To know proper drying condition for making a safe Sunsik, uncooked food, microbial and physicochemical characteristics of cereal dried by hot-air drying was investigated. As moisture content of 3 Sunsik samples was reduced to about 8%, protein, carbohydrate, fat and ash content of those was increased. But approximate composition of black bean, black rice and glutinous millete and black bean showed little changes during hot-air drying (30, 40, $50^{\circ}C$). Lightness (L value), redness (a value) and yellowness (b value) was increased after hot-air drying. In case of black rice and glutinous millet, b value and L value wasn't changed individually. When we measured a texture for 3 kinds of raw cereal for, hardness of dried cereals was lower than raw cereals. Hardness of dried cereals was increasd as drying temperature was increased. As results of mocrobiologicl experiment for 3 kinds of sunsik on hot-air drying conditions, total cell count was reduced 2 log - 3 log and other pathogenic microorganism wasn't detected except B. cereus.

In this study, the effect of osmotic drying conditions of mangoes on hot air drying was investigated. Four different osmotic agents of 60 Brix, such as S60, SM10, HF80, and SG25, were prepared. Mango slabs were osmotically dried with the agents at a ratio of 1:4 (w/w) for up to 8 hours. SG25 showed the lowest weight reduction and moisture loss during the process. As a result of hot-air drying, all samples showed a high correlation with the Page model (0.9761~0.9997), and the required drying time of all samples that were osmotically dried was reduced compared to the non-osmotically dried group. After hot-air drying, the pH value increased according to the drying temperature. The L, a, and b values and the total polyphenol content also decreased. Through this study, the possibility of osmotic drying was confirmed to increase the efficiency of hot air drying of mangoes, which is expected to contribute to the industrial use of domestic mangoes.

The oriental melon poses challenges in terms of long-term storage and distribution. Addressing these issues requires an extension of the storage life through appropriate processing. In this study, pretreated hot-air dried oriental melon slices (steamed and freeze-thawed) were prepared, and their physicochemical and organoleptic properties were examined. The control group (CON) consisted of hot-air dried oriental melon slices without pretreatment, while the steamed group (STG) and freeze-thawed group (FTG) consisted of hot-air dried oriental melon slices pretreated using steaming and freeze-thawing methods, respectively. The moisture contents detected in the CON, STG, and FTG groups ranged from 15.96% to 27.30%, with variations of 7.53 to 8.40 °Brix for the soluble solid contents. The CON group showed the highest Hunter color value for lightness (L*) and the lowest value for redness (a*). The texture profile analysis revealed the highest hardness and chewiness in the order of STG > CON > FTG. Considerable differences were observed in springiness and adhesiveness in the FTG group compared to the other groups. The organoleptic evaluation showed that the CON group had the highest sensory scores for overall preference. These findings indicate that the properties of hot-air dried oriental melon slices were influenced by physical pretreatments and that manufacturing these slices without pretreatment is the most effective method in terms of processing simplicity and cost efficiency.
This study was performed to provide the basic data for the prediction of the usefulness of onion with cold tolerance cultivated in Kangwon. The physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of freeze-dried and hot-air-dried (40 and $60^{\circ}C$) onions were investigated. The moisture content of the raw onion was 90.55%. The crude protein and crude fat contents of the freeze-dried onions were slightly higher than those of the hot-air-dried onions ($40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$). As for the color values, the freeze-dried onion powder was highest in lightness (77.19), and the $60^{\circ}C$ hot air-dried onion was highest in redness (6.09) and yellowness (24.60). Moreover, the color difference (${\Delta}E$) between the freeze-dried and hot-air-dried ($40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$) onion powders was significant. The brown index was lower in the freeze-dried onion than in both hot-air-dried onions. The total phenol content and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging activity of both hot-air-dried onions were higher than those of the freeze-dried onion. These results indicate that the freeze-drying methods protected the physicochemical properties of the onion powder, whereas the hot-air-drying method enhanced the antioxidant activity and the total phenol content of the onion powder.

Improvement in the utilization of grape pomace, antioxidant activities and antioxidant compounds of grape pomace was analyzed to clarify the influence of drying method such as $80^{\circ}C$ hot air and freeze ($-70^{\circ}C$) drying process. For proximate composition, crude protein and fat contents of hot air drying sample were higher than freeze drying sample. The lightness and redness values of freeze drying sample were higher than hot air drying sample, but yellowness of hot air drying sample was higher. The contents of total polyphenols and anthocyanins were higher in freeze drying sample. DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS scavenging activity of freeze drying sample were higher than hot air drying sample. The reducing power and FRAP value of hot air drying sample was higher than freeze drying sample. The result indicated that freeze drying method is slightly better than hot air drying method for antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activity.
