  • Mean velocities and turbulent characteristics in the three-dimensional flow fields of a gun-type gas burner were measured by using triple hot-wire probe (T-probe) in order to compare them with the results already presented by X-type hot-wire probe (X-probe). Vectors obtained by the measurement of two kinds of probes in the horizontal plane and in the cross section respectively show more or less difference in magnitude each other, but comparatively similar shape in overall distribution. Axial mean velocity component along the centerline shows that the value by T-probe is about ten times smaller than that by X-probe above the range of X/R=3. Also, the axial component of turbulent intensity along the centerline appears the biggest difference between the two probes. Moreover, axial mean velocity component, axial turbulent intensity component and rotational along the Y-directional distance show a big difference between slits and swirl vanes. On the whole, the values by T-probe appear smaller than those by X-probe.

  • A triple hot-wire probe has an essential potentiality for the measure- ment of an instantaneous velocity vector in a three dimensional unsteady flow with large amplitude of velocity fluctuations, the key problems asso- ciated with this instrument are the directional range of applicability and the accuracy. This present paper is concerned with a new method of the techniques of calibration and data processing to estimate the three dimensional flow field using an arbitrary shaped triple hot-wire probe. The method is not based on the assumptions of orthogonality or symmetry and it is especially useful for applications to a hand-made probe where probe geometry is not accurately known. The test application is made to evaluate the effect of cone angles of symmetric non-orthogonal probe.

  • A method for measuring three-dimensional turbulent flows by the hot-wire anemometer is introduced. Mojolla's method using the X-type probe is adopted and modified for the slantwire probe without the linearizer. The probe is aligned with specified angles to the given uniform flow and the shear layer to verify the measuring errors due to the three-dimensionality and the turbulence level. Errors in the measurements of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses increase with the degree of three dimensionality in the flow. The incoming flow angle of 20 degree seems to be the limit of reasonable flow measurements. But there still appear large data scatterings in Reynolds shear stresses.

  • To generate electricity from wind energy, wind turbine generally has a rotor blade. Since this rotor blade is a kind of the rotating machinery, the wake from the rotor is very Important role in the side of the aerodynamic performances. Thus the study about wake is essential to analyze wind turbine aerodynamics. In this study wake characteristics are analyzed by hot-wire probe in the K.A.F.A(Korea Air Force Academy) wind tunnel. It is possible to analyze the wake characteristics by hot-wire probe from acquiring the velocity fluctuations at given positions in the flow. This velocity data are arranged by trigger signal at same azimuth of the blade in periodic manner of the rotor blade. From this various wake characteristics are found : radial and axial position of the tip vortex, vortex core characteristics in the flow etc.

  • The turbulent flow field characteristics of a gun-type gas burner with and without a duct were investigated under the isothermal condition of non-combustion. Vectors and mean velocities were measured by hot-wire anemometer system with an X-type hot-wire probe in this paper. The turbulent flow field with a duct seems to cause a counter-clockwise recirculation flow from downstream to upstream due to the unbalance of static pressure between a main jet flow and a duct wall. Moreover, the recirculation flow seems to expand the main jet flow to the radial and to shorten it to the axial. Therefore, the turbulent flow field with a duct increases a radial momentum but decreases a axial momentum. As a result, an axial mean velocity component with a duct above the downstream range of about X/R=1.5 forms a smaller magnitude than that without a duct in the inner part of a burner, but it shows the opposite trend in the outer part.

  • In order to apply the design method of diagonal flow fan based on axial flow design to the design of radial-outflow type diagonal flow fan which has lower specific speed of 600-700 [$min^{-1}$, $m^3/min$, m], radial-outflow type diagonal flow fan which specific speed was 670 [$min^{-1}$, $m^3/min$, m] was designed by a quasi three-dimensional design method. Experimental investigations were conducted by fan characteristics test, flow surveys by a five-hole probe and a hot wire probe. Fan characteristics test agreed well with the design values. In the flow survey at rotor outlet, the characteristic region was observed. Two flow phenomena are considered as the cause of the characteristic region, one is tip leakage vortex near rotor tip and another is pressure surface separation on the rotor blade.

  • This paper describes the flow measurements inside the blade passage of an axial flow fan by using a rotating hot-wire probe sensor from a relative flame of reference fixed to the rotor blades. The validity of fan rotor designed by a streamline curvature equation was performed by the measurement of the three-dimensional flow upstream and downstream of the fan rotor using a 5-hole pitot tube. The vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed by the measurements of a relative velocity and its fluctuation on quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. Larger vortical flow, which results in higher blockage in the main flow, is formed according to decrease a flow rate. The vortical flow spreads out to the 30 percent span from the rotor tip at near stall condition. In the design operating condition, the tip leakage vortex is moved downstream while the center of the vortex keeps constant in the spanwise direction. Detailed characteristics of a velocity fluctuation with relation to the vortex were also analyzed.

  • The turbulent swirling flow field characteristics of a gun-type gas burner with a combustion chamber were investigated under the cold flow condition. The velocities and turbulent quantities were measured by hot-wire anemometer system with an X-type probe. The turbulent swirling flow field in the edge of a jet seems to cause a recirculation flow from downstream to upstream due to the unbalance of static pressure between a main jet flow and a chamber wall. Moreover, because the recirculation flow seems to expand the main jet flow to the radial and to shorten it to the axial, the turbulent swirling flow field with a chamber increases a radial momentum but decreases an axial as compared with the case without a chamber from the range of about X/R=1.5. As a result, these phenomena can be seen through all mean velocities, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent shear stresses. All physical quantities obtained around the slits, however, show the similar magnitude and profiles as the case without a chamber within the range of about X/R=1.0.

  • Unsteady nature of a tip leakage vortex in an axial flow fan operating at a design and off-design operating conditions has been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation in a blade passage with a rotating hotwire probe sensor. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor were also introduced to obtain the cross-correlation coefficient between the two sensors located in the vortical flow as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed at the quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. The leakage vortex is enlarged as the flow rate is decreased, thus resulting in the high blockage to main flow. The spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region at higher flow rates than the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition.
