  • In this paper, we suggest a dimensional controller to produce a different thickness strip without adding production facilities at the same steel. We describe the model for the non-linear thickness and speed setup, and drive a variation of the speed and thickness with Talyor expansion. The control algorithm is composed of 8 steps and the transient condition is added in order to maintain a mass flow between stands. A simulator is developed in order to verify the algorithm, and includes a non-linear rolling model, the tension model, AGC model, the disturbance model, and so on. From the simulation results by disturbances, we show that the thickness, tension and looper angle are converged to the set condition when we change the rolling conditions.

  • In this paper, we propose a CFWC (CCD and fuzzy PID based width control) scheme to obtain the desired delivery width margin of a vertical rolling mill in hot strip process. A WMS(width measurement system) is composed of two line scan cameras, an edge detection algorithm, a glitch filter, and so on. A dynamic model of the mill is derived from a gauge meter equation in order to design the fuzzy PID controller. The controller is a self-learning structure to select the PID gains from the error and error rate of the width margin. The effectiveness of the proposed CFWC is verified from simulation results under a width disturbance of the entry in the mill. Using a field test, we show that the performance of the width control is improved by the proposed control scheme.

  • In this paper, a LBCC (Latter Bank Cooling Control) for the high strength steel is proposed to obtain the desirable temperature and the property of the material along the longitudinal direction of the steel on the ROT (Run-Out Table) process. A cooling valve is modeled to analyze the response of the ROT banks. The control concept is derived from a field data, a valve model considering the valve response and a TTT (Time-Temperature Transformation) diagram. The proposed control is verified from the simulation results under the various carbon quantities. It is shown through the field test of the hot strip mill that the deviation of the CT (Coiling Temperature) is considerably decreased by the proposed temperature control.

  • In this paper, we propose an LTBC (Low Tension and Load Balance Control) scheme to improve a coiling shape control by reduction the tension fluctuation by the torque disturbance in the down coiler process of hot strip mills. The proposed controller is a combination of an LTC to control the overload at load-on in the mandrel and an LBC to regulate the load balance of the upper and bottom pinch roll. A tension calculation model is suggested with the concept of the tension deviation. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified from simulation under a disturbance of the pinch roll torque. Using a field test, we show that the performance of the shape and tension control is improved by the LTBC control.

  • A laboratory scale hot strip rolling wear simulator(HRWS) was developed for the purpose of investigating the tribological phenomena occurred in production hot strip rolling mills. The HRWS' main parts are the electric heater, the mechanical descaler, tandem type 2-4Hi rolling mill stands, the cooling chamber, the tension controller and coiler. By simulating the tribelogical phenomena in rolling process at laboratory, wear patterns, cracks, cat-ear wear, black film, effect of hot rolling oil lubrication, etc. were reproduced, and discussed on the performace of simulator.

  • The looper control of hot strip finishing mill is one of the most important control item in hot strip rolling mill process. Loopers are placed between finishing mill stands and control the mass flow of the two stands. Another important action of the looper is to control the strip tension which influences on the width of the strip. So it is very important to control both the looper angle and the strip tension simultaneously but the looper angle and the strip tension are strongly interacted by each other. There are many control schemes such as conventional, non-interactive, LQ, LQG/LTR, and ILQ control in the looper control system. In this paper, we present the modeling for the looper of a hot strip finishing mill to control the tension of the strip and suggest the non-interactive(cross) and LQG/LTR control method.

  • We developed an LSDC (Load Shift and Load Distribution Control) technology in order to improve coil quality and productivity by reducing tension fluctuation especially for the tail of the strip in the down coiler in hot strip mills. To adapt the new controller, the torque and speed distribution between the zero pinch roll, pinch roll, and mandrel are needed. The proposed controller is a combination of an LSC to share the tension between the mill stand and the mandrel, and an LDC to shift the torque load from the zero pinch roll to the pinch roll. From the simulation, the proposed controller is verified under the torque disturbance. Using a field test, the torque deviation decreased by nearly 50% through utilization of the LSDC control.

  • Output and cost efficiency in the production of hot-rolled strip depend to a large content on the uniformity of geometric and mechanical properties over the length and width of the rolled end product. To ensure the homogeneous temperatures required for this during the rolling process a system to measure and evaluate the transverse temperature profile was developed and implemented in production. The systems used consist of temperature scanners and computers for measurement and data evaluation. The systems have been installed in Kwangyang hot strip mills, in the cases at the exit of the finishing train and at the entry of the coiler. They are used in production to determine the effect of the finishing train and the cooling zone on the technological properties of the hot rolled strip.

  • In the hot strip mill, not only the chatter vibration of finishing stands has a great influence on the surface quality of hot products, but also that is the major factors to shorten the life of rolling mill housings or to create the machine troubles. As long as the mill has been operating, the low frequency chatter at the early mill stands (No.2 and No.3) of POSCO's Kwangyang No.2 hot strip mill had been detected when rolling certain types of products, e.g., thinner gage, hard grade products. For several years, the experimental study was undertaken to analyze the cause of the chatter vibration and establish the methods to avoid the vibration to acceptable levels. The analysis and solution to the vibration problem with recommendations and revised maintenance practice are the subjects of this article.

  • In this paper, we propose an independent cooling control (ICC) scheme for high strength and atmosphere corrosion resisting steel to obtain the desired temperature and properties along the longitudinal direction of the steel in the run-out table (ROT) process. A temperature model of the independent process is developed to divide the ROT into front and back sections. The control concept uses field data, problem analysis, and a time-temperature transformation diagram. The effectiveness of the proposed control is verified using simulation results under a temperature disturbance by the transformation in the middle of the ROT. The results of a hot strip mill field test show that the temperature control performance is significantly improved by the proposed control scheme.
