Determination of Carbon Equivalent Equation by Using Neural Network for Roll Force Prediction in hot Strip Mill (신경망을 이용한 열간 압연하중 예측용 탄소당량식의 개발)

  • New carbon equivalent equation for the better prediction for the better prediction of roll force in a continuous hot strip mill has been formulated by applying a neural network method. In predicting roll force of steel strip, carbon equivalent equation which normalize the effects of various alloying elements by a carbon equivalent content is very critical for the accurate prediction of roll force. To overcome the complex relationships between alloying elements and operational variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate and so forth, a neural network method which is effective for multi-variable analysis was adopted in the present work as a tool to determine a proper carbon equivalent equation. The application of newly formulated carbon equivalent equation has increased prediction accuracy of roll force significantly and the effectiveness of neural network method is well confirmed in this study.

  • A laboratory scale hot strip rolling wear simulator(HRWS) was developed for the purpose of investigating the tribological phenomena occurred in production hot strip rolling mills. The HRWS' main parts are the electric heater, the mechanical descaler, tandem type 2-4Hi rolling mill stands, the cooling chamber, the tension controller and coiler. By simulating the tribelogical phenomena in rolling process at laboratory, wear patterns, cracks, cat-ear wear, black film, effect of hot rolling oil lubrication, etc. were reproduced, and discussed on the performace of simulator.

  • An integrated finite element computer simulator is presented for the prediction of three dimensional heat transfer and metal flow occurring in the strip, and heat transfer and thermo elastic phenomena occurring in the rolls in 4 high mill hot strip rolling. Basic finite element models are described, with emphasis on combining each model to deal rigorously with the coupled aspect of the thermo-mechanical behaviors of the rols and strip through an iterative solution procedure. A series of process simulation are carried out to investigate the effect of various parameters under the actual process conditions. The results are shown and discussed.

  • This study aims at the development of REC sensor causing the gauge error in the hot strip rolling process, and the improvement of the hydraulic AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) system. The gauge error outbreaks from the various reasons, however, mainly the roll eccentricity is considered to cause a such kind of error. In the study, the REC (Roll Eccentricity Control System) sensor is designed using sensor An On - line test of the system shows the comprehensive effects of controlling the gauge error of the hot strip. On - Line test shows the possibility of enhancing the accuracy for gauge.

  • This document illustrates the way to control of coiling temperature(CTC) of stip tail part in minimill process. The coiling temperature (CT) is very important fact in hot rolling process because the mechnical properties of strip depend on it. In mini-mill pocess, the speed pattern of rolling is different from that of conventional hot rolling. We have a lot of difficulties in controlling the coiling temperature at strip tail part, because after the strip tail is passed out the final stand, it's impossible to control the coiling temperature by using coiling speed. So we have CT deveiation in this gauge, about 160$^{\circ}C$ below in comparison with target CT. It's clear that deviation of mechanical properties(tensile strength, vield ratio etc) of strip to direction of length is so large, so we could not produce middle carbon steel, like this temperature condition. New coiling temperature control of strip especially in strip tail was developed.   • When hot strip is trimmed in the side trimming process at the entry side of tandem cold rolling mill, due to bad quality of trimming face and burr, product quality(saw ear)becomes so bad that it causes drop of yield and claim from customers. Therefore, it was examined that applying ultrasonic vibration is an effective method to improve quality of strip trimming face and decrease burr magnitude by decreasing shear force acting between strip trimming face and knife in side trimming process of cold rolling.

  • Strip profile and shape control is one of the most important technologies in cold mill, especially for ultra-thin and wide cold strip. The 6-high mills, both of HCMW and UCMW mill, are known to be very effective for the shape controllability. The optimized values of these factors for set-up scheduling were analyzed and found that excellent strip control would be possible by controlling the combination of the influencing factors according to hot coil profile. The important considerations for operation were discussed for individual stand.

  • Investigations of the fatigue damage of roughing mill roll and experimentally. By the computer simulation for analysing the stresses on the roll surface and experimental hot rolling, the following results were drawn : The crakcs observed on the roll surface were initiated thermally in the initial stage of the rolling and propagated by repeated thermal and bending stresses. The size of the roll surface cracks smaller than 4.87mm could avoid the occurrence of tiny scab, surface defect of hot steel strip. Since the size of surface cracks observed on the roughing mill roll was very small, the fatigue damage of roll surface was found not to be the major factor for the formation of the scab.

  • Output and cost efficiency in the production of hot-rolled strip depend to a large content on the uniformity of geometric and mechanical properties over the length and width of the rolled end product. To ensure the homogeneous temperatures required for this during the rolling process a system to measure and evaluate the transverse temperature profile was developed and implemented in production. The systems used consist of temperature scanners and computers for measurement and data evaluation. The systems have been installed in Kwangyang hot strip mills, in the cases at the exit of the finishing train and at the entry of the coiler. They are used in production to determine the effect of the finishing train and the cooling zone on the technological properties of the hot rolled strip.
