The temperature distribution of high speed tool steel rod has been studied during high speed hot rolling procedures. The tool steel rod shows severe temperature gradient during rolling procedures and the temperature at the center of rod are much higher than that at the surface of rod. This temperature gradient accumulated after every rolling procedure and the center of rolled rod could be remelt in some procedures to cause inside defects. In this study, the temperature distribution was simulated using finite element method and the processing parameters such as rolling speed, cooling condition, have been discussed to prevent the temperature increases at the center of rod.

The objective of this study is to predict the roll wear in hot rod rolling process. In this study hot rod rolling process for round and oval passes has been investigated. In order to predict the roll wear, the wear model is reformulated as an incremental form and then wear depth of roll is calculated at each deformation step on contact area using the results of finite element analysis, such as relative sliding velocity and normal pressure at contact area. Archard's wear model was applied to predict the roll wear. To know the thermal softening of DCI (Ductile Cast Iron) roll according to operating conditions, high temperature micro hardness test is executed and a new wear model has been proposed by considering the thermal softening of DCI roll expressed in terms of the main tempering parameter curve. 3D wear program developed in this study might be used for adjusting the gap of rolls to set up a suitable rolling schedule for keeping dimensional tolerance of the product.

A rolling speed dependent spread model is proposed for predicting the exit cross sectional shape in oval-round (or round-oval) pass rod rolling process when the rolling speed is very high. The effect of rolling speed on the exit cross sectional shape is measured by performing a four-pass continuous high speed (${\sim}80m/s$) rod rolling test and is described in terms of the spread correction parameter. The validity of the model is examined by applying it to rod rolling process at POSCO No.3 Rod Mill. The cross sectional shapes of workpiece predicted by the proposed model coupled with the surface profile prediction $method^{6}$ are in good agreement with those obtained experimentally.

This study examined the cause of the wrinkle defect which is frequently encountered in wire rod rolling of low carbon steel$(C0.08\~0.13wt.\%)$. Even a small defect on the surface of rolled bars can easily develop into fatal cracks during cold heading process of low carbon steel, and it is therefore necessary to minimize inherent defects on the surface of hot rolled bars. Hot rolling process of low carbon steel was analyzed to identify the cause of the wrinkle defect in conjunction with FE analysis. The integrated analysis revealed that the wrinkle defect initiated in the first stage of rolling, and it was at the billet edge where severe deformation and drastic temperature drop were present. To elucidate the micro-mechanical mechanism of the wrinkle defect, hot compression tests were carried out at various temperatures and strain rates using Gleeble-3800. The surface profile of the each other compressed specimens was compared, and rough surface lines were observed at relatively low temperatures. Those surface defects can develop into wrinkles during multi-pass rolling. To control the wrinkle defect in rolling, it is necessary to design an adequate caliber which can minimize the loss of ductility, and thereby prevent flow localization. To use the result of this study fur other steels, the quantitative measure of the wrinkle defect and flow localization parameter should be proposed.

After pure titanium Ingot(G2) with 400mm in diameter was manufactured, the analysis of its ingredients showed that the oxygen content was 0.073wt% and the iron content was 0.03wt%, which made ASTM Gr.2 standardization satisfactory. The processed titanium ingot produced 42mm wire rod, and hot rolling of 18th phase produced 9mm wire rod. The hardness analysis of 15.8mm wire rod, which was processed in hot rolling of 10th phase from the surface to the center, resulted in almost constant value with Hv150~200. The last 9mm wire rod had a different yield strength and elongation percentage depending on the temperature as it was led in to a hot roller. However, tensile strength revealed an approximate value and made ASTM B863 standardization satisfactory.

A finite element analysis-based approach which investigates the causes of the breakdown in the outer ring of the choke at hot rod rolling mill is presented. Two-dimensional drawings of the whole vertical-type mill stand are transformed into three-dimensional CAD models. Non-linear elasto-plastic deformation analysis of material at the roll gap is performed for computing roll force and torque of the work roll. Then, the reaction forces of the bearing rings together with a set of roller bearings that support the work roll are obtained by means of rigid body motion analysis. Finally, stress behaviors in the bearing rings together with a set of roller bearings that support the work roll are investigated by linear elastic analysis. Results reveal that stress at the contact area between the outer ring and roller bearing is extraordinary high when an internal gap between an external surface of the outer ring and the internal surface of the chock due to wear of the inside of the chock occurs.

A reliable analytic model that determines the cross sectional shape of a workpiece(material) in round-oval(or oval-round) pass sequence has been developed. the cross sectional shape of an outgoing workpiece is predicted by using the linear interpolation of the radius of curvature of an incoming workpiece and that of roll groove to the roll axis direction. The requirements we placed on the choice of the weighting function were to ensure boundary conditions specified. The validity of the analytic model has been examined by hot rod rolling experiment with the roll gap and specimen size changed. The cross sectional shape and area of a workpiece predicted by the proposed analytic model were good agreement with those obtained experimentally. It was found that the analytic model has not only simplicity and accuracy for practical usage but also save a large amount of computational time compared with finite element method.
This paper presents a study of the effect of varying the roll gap of oval pass in round-oval-round pass sequence on the interracial slip of workpiece, entrance and exit velocities, stresses and roll load that the workpiece experiences during rolling, by applying analytical method, finite element simulation and verification through hot bar rolling tests. The results have shown that the roll gap variation of oval pass affects the interfacial slip of workpiece along the groove contact and the specific roll pressure. The optimum conditions in terms of minimum interfacial slip and minimum specific roll pressure, which might influence the maximum groove life, is obtained when the subsequent round pass is completely filled.
