  • This study was to determine the effect of cooling part of the trunk without harm for the health. The results provide basic data for the development of clothing which could increase work efficiency and reduce body strain in hot environment. Eight males took part in the study. The experiment was conducted in a climate-chamber controlled with $37{\pm}1^{\circ}C,\;50{\pm}5%R.H$. The trunk was divided into six areas to be cooled: head, neck, chest, abdomen, the upper back, the lower back. According to preceding studies, permissible safety cooling limits of skin temperature, of each part of the trunk for four hours cooling were $25^{\circ}C$ on the head, $20^{\circ}C$ on the neck, $27^{\circ}C$ on the chest, $25^{\circ}C$ on the abdomen, $20^{\circ}C$ on the upper back, $20^{\circ}C$ on the lower back. So cooling temperatures of each region set up temperatures above mentioned. In conclusion, the head, the neck and the upper back cooling could reduce sweating amount, rectal temperature and heart rates and reduce the heat stress of workers exposing in the hot environment by decreased subjective sensations of heat and comfort. Thus, it was concluded that effectiveness of cooling among the trunk was best on the head and the neck.

  • We proposed a high-temperature circuit-analog radar absorbing structures (CA-RAS), and evaluated radar absorption performance and tensile properties in 350℃ and a hot-wet environment. The CA-RAS was implemented with a glass/cyanate ester composites and a square resistive pattern layer, and reflection loss was measured by 350℃ and after exposure of hot-wet condition using free space measurement. And the tensile strength at 350℃ and after exposure of hot-wet condition was measured according to the ASTM D638. The proposed CA-RAS showed a 4 GHz of -dB bandwidth and -20 dB of a peak value at 350℃. In addition, there was no deterioration in absorption performance after exposure to a hot-wet condition. The tensile strength value of more than 95% compared to the strength of the glass/cyanate ester composite was confirmed at 350℃ and after exposure of hot-wet condition. Through this, the applicability of CA-RAS proposed in this study was confirmed as a load bearing structure for stealth weapon exposed to high temperature and hot-wet environment.

  • Korea has made the rapid economical development under the condition with the high population density and low available land. In this context, conservation of land environment, connected directly with living quality of human, has mostly ignored. Prior Environment Review System(PERS) is the one to investigate the locational validity, environmental impacts, harmony with surrounding environment, from the early stage of administrative plan or development project. PERS was amended to include SEA(Strategic Environment Assessment) system on June 1, 2006. But, several problems, including the loss of administrative ability, cost, and time, have been appeared, since the system is applied to all administrative plans without any distinction and plans or projects are delayed generally. In this study, the weaknesses of PERS were indicated through the comprehensive analysis including literature survey, study of legal and internet database, and the recently published PERS reports. Based on that, the improvement schemes were suggested to be harmonized with the nature of SEA. This study was mainly focused on a PERS for the designation of conservational area of hot-spring wells, conducted by authors.

  • An analysis of a multi-pin remote welding for a DUPIC fuel fabrication was made to establish the optimum welding processes in a hot cell environment. An initial investigation for hands-on fabrication outside the hot cell was performed, and the constraints of a hot cell welding were considered. Preliminary welding performances to improve the RW process were also examined. The RW process was determined to be the best in a hot cell environment for joining the end plate to the end caps. This paper presents an outline of the developed RW machine for a DUPIC fuel fabrication and compares the characteristics of a Zr-4 end plate welding by using electrical resistance and LB methods. The weld nuggets of RW specimens and torque strengths of resistant and LB welded zones were also investigated.

  • Hot springs development will be more activated with the five-day work week system than before. Nevertheless, investment and development achievement of hot springs has not resulted in a successful performance to foster townships, and this calls upon locals to build a guideline to develop hot springs. This study intends to analyze laws on hot springs, which influence mostly on the hot spring development, to gather up the information on the present state of the development, and to suggest considerations for further development plans. Features of the hot spring development are as follows: One is that metropolitan cities will discover hot spring resources more than small cities. Therefore the development will be twofold : one for resort tour and the other for one-day rest and recreation. In addition, Korean laws on hot springs are more site development-oriented to support tourism and recreation than to protect environment and discover unused resources. This makes hot spring development easier and efficient being supported by hot spring law, law on territory development and use, and tourism promotion law. On the other side, planned landscape trimming can be uniformized and unharmonized in terms of local identity and environment-friendliness. This is why careful considerations such as goods and bads of the local resources, local history and culture are needed in hot spring development. A long-term development project should include remodeling based on local identity and development trends. The third point indicates that Korean hot springs development has recorded relatively low performance due to difficult private capital attraction, and a high fence on land purchase and development approval. It is essential to release restrictions on the hot spring development-especially on those whose development performance has not been successful so that best practice can be supported by the government in remodeling and marketing. New plans on hot spring development should be also examined based on developer's capacity and local authorities' volition on the plan. Last point shows that most hot springs development plans have been designed only based on territory utilizing plan and facilities arrangement, not considering much on fund-raising, operational plan or feasibility analysis. Therefore the tourism promotion law should reinforce guidelines on tourist site approval system by supplementing criteria. At the same time, an education on tourism development planning is necessary to deepen developers' understanding, since most developers are experts more on city development, landscape architecture, designing, constructing and engineering than tourism development.

  • The evaluations of daily safe yield and reciprocal influence of hot spring wells are important subjects that the specialized agencies of hot spring has to survey. The survey of hot spring had been executed by Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) prior to 1996. However, as of 2006, eight specialized agencies of hot spring are working on it and so the survey of hot spring is not consistent now. This study was carried out to analyze data from hot spring in the same way by every specialized agency. The time of residual drawdown was applied to evaluate daily safe yield because some of wells have slow recovery of drawdown. The reciprocal influence between hot spring wells was evaluated by drawdown of observation wells when a new well was pumped.
