Studies on Performance of CO2 Water Heater by Numerical Modeling (수치적 모델링을 통한 이산화탄소 급탕기의 특성 연구)

  • Numerical modeling of $CO_2$ water heater was conducted prior to optimal design of medium and large sized $CO_2$ water heater, and the experimental test with small sized $CO_2$ water heater having heat capacity of 4 kW was completed to verify the present numerical model. The present model estimated the experimental data of COP(coefficient of performance), heating capacity, and the hot water outlet temperature within the range of 3% to 8% of mean deviation. As increase of EEV(electric expansion valve) opening area, decreasing of heating capacity and the hot water outlet temperature, and increasing of COP were found in both experimental and numerical investigation.

Fuel Qualities and Combustion Characteristics of Animal-Fats Biodiesel for Agricultural Hot Air Heaters

  • Purpose: Combustion and fuel qualities of the animal-fats biodiesel as a heating fuel for agricultural hot air heater were studied. Methods: Biodiesel (BD) was made from animal-fats by reacting with methanol and potassium hydroxide in the laboratory. The biodiesel made in the laboratory was tested for fuel and combustion qualities. Results: The kinematic viscosity and the calorific values of the biodiesels were measured. Kerosene based biodiesel, BD20 (K) showed 18 cSt at $-20^{\circ}C$. It seemed that BD100 was not suitable for a heating fuel under some temperature. As BD content increased, the calorific value decreased up to 40,000 J/g for BD100, while the calorific value of light oil was 45,567 J/g showing difference of 5,567 J/g, about 12% difference. Several different fuels including BD20 (biodiesel 20% + light oil 80%), BD50 (biodiesel 50% + light oil 50%), BD100 (biodiesel 100%), and light oil were tested for fuel combustion qualities for agricultural hot air heater, and their combustion performances were compared and analyzed. Flame dimensions of biodiesels and light oils were almost the same shape at the same combustion condition. Generally, the $CO_2$ amounts of BDs were greater than light oil. However, in this study the differences were minor, so there was no significant difference existed between the BDs combustion and light oil. Conclusions: It seemed that quality was good for heating oil for agricultural hot air heater because of showing no barriers for continuous combustion and proper exhaust gas temperature and $CO_2$ amount discharged. But, for fuel fluidity for higher BD content fuel could be a detrimental problem in situations where the outdoor temperature is lowered. As BD content increased, calorific value decreased up to 40,000 J/g for BD100. Calorific value difference between BD20 and light oil was about 1,360 J/g.

EXHAUST GAS HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEM FOR PLANT BED HEATING IN GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION

  • Hot air heater with light oil combustion is the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season in Korea. However, since the heat efficiency of the heater is about 80%, considerable unused heat in the form of exhaust gas heat discharges to atmosphere. In order to capture this exhaust gas heat a heat recovery system for plant bed heating in the greenhouse was built and tested in the hot air heating system of greenhouse. The system consists of a heat exchanger made of copper pipes, ${\phi}\;12.7{\times}0.7t$ located inside the rectangular column of $330{\times}330{\times}900mm$, a water circulation pump, circulation plastic pipe and a water tame The total heat exchanger area is $1.5m^2$, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between flue gas and water circulated in the copper pipes. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. The heat recovery system was designed as to even recapture the latent heat of flue gas when exposing to low temperature water in the heat exchanger. According to performance test it can recover 45,200 to 51,000kJ/hr depending on the water circulation rates of 330 to $690{\ell}$/hr from the waste heat discharged. The exhaust gas temperature left from the heat exchanger dropped to $100^{circ}C$ from $270^{circ}C$ by the heat exchange between the water and the flue gas, while water gained the difference and temperature increased to $38^{circ}C$ from $21^{circ}C$ at the water flow rate of $690{\ell}$/hr. And, the condensed water amount varies from 16 to $43m{\ell}$ at the same water circulation rates. This condensing heat recovery system can reduce boiler fuel consumption amount in a day by 34% according to the feasibility study of the actual mimitomato greenhouse. No combustion load was observed in the hot air heater.

Optimum Design of Middle-Sized CO2 Water Heater (중형 이산화탄소 급탕기의 최적 설계)

  • Middle-sized $CO_2$ water heater having compressor power of 7.45 kW was designed, and its performances were experimentally tested. Besides, optimum design of the $CO_2$ water heater was conducted by cycle simulation. When ambient temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and hot water outlet temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ the $CO_2$ water heater showed the COP of 3.2. As hot water temperature increased the COP is getting decreased due to significant increase of compressor power consumption compared to increasing rate of heating capacity. When ambient temperature increased from $-3^{\circ}C$ to $12^{\circ}C$ the COP increased by 30%. The optimum components design of a gas cooler, an internal heat exchanger, and an evaporator were conducted, and the experimental correlation between amount of EEV opening and ambient temperature, and hot water temperature was suggested.

Heat Recovery Characteristics of the Exhaust Heat Recovery System with Heat Pipe Unit Attached to the Hot Air Heater in the Greenhouse (히트파이프를 이용한 온풍난방기 배기열회수 시스템의 열회수 특성)

  • Hot air heater with light oil combustion is used as the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season. However, exhaust gas heat discharged to atmosphere through chimney reaches up to 10~20% of total heat capacity of the oil burred. In order to recover the heat of this exhaust gas and to use for greenhouse heating, the heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system was manufactured and tested in this experiment. The system consisted of a heat exchanger made of heat pipes, ø15.88${\times}$600mm located in the rectangular box of 675(L)${\times}$425(W)${\times}$370(H)mm, an air suction fan and air ducts. The number of heat pipe was 60, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between exhaust gas and air and heat transfer capacity of a heat pipe. The working fluid of heat pipe was acetone because acetone is known for its excellent heat transfer capacity. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. According to the performance test it could recover 53,809 to 74,613kJ/h depending on the inlet air temperature of 12 to -12˚at air flow rate of 1.100㎥/h. The temperature of the exhaust gas left the heat exchanger dropped to 100$^{\circ}C$ from 270$^{\circ}C$ after the heat exchange between the suction air and the exhaust gas.

  • 2 Types of heater (Vitiated Type, Clean Air Type) in order to increase the temperature for a test are used for industry. In this report, large capacity clean air type heater was designed. Heater capacity and LNG consumption rate can be calculated by the air mass flow and heater inlet/outlet temperature. The heater is composed by Burner, Furnace, Heat Exchanger, and Stack. The hot air from the burner and cold air from the tube inlet exchange their heat indirectly in the heat exchanger, so the desired temperature can be achieved at the exit of the tube.

  • Air mixing system which is composed of air pressure control system, hot pipe system and air mixer, is the facility for mixing hot air($1000^{\circ}C$, 10kg/s) from storage air heater (SAH) and decompressed air($20^{\circ}C$, 15kg/s) from high pressure air supply system. Air pressure control system reduce the pressure of the air, from 32MPa to 3.5 MPa and supply the decompressed air to air mixer. The hot pipe system supply hot air from SAH to air mixer which mix hot with the decompressed air from air pressure control system. Fully mixed air flow rate is 25kg/s and mixed temperature is up to $400^{\circ}C$. So, we can expand the operating envelop of the supersonic ground test facility to low Mach number and low altitude region.

Performance Evaluation of the Hybrid Defrost Process in the Fin-Tube Evaporators of Refrigerators (하이브리드 제상 방식을 적용한 냉장고용 핀-관 열교환기의 제상 성능 평가)

  • The hybrid defrost process combined with hot-gas bypass defrost and electric heater defrost was experimentally evaluated about its defrost performance in the fin-tube evaporators of household refrigerators. Also the hybrid defrost process was compared with only electric heater defrost process. The defrost efficiency of the hybrid defrost process was shown two times higher than electric heater defrost process. The defrost time of the hybrid defrost process was shorten about 10%~50% than electric heater defrost process. Thermal shock after defrost process was decreased about 50% for the case of the hybrid defrost. It was found that energy consumption ratio of defrost process was reduced up to 7.4% compared with 22.4% of electric heater defrost at the condition of $25^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature.

Conceptual study of the Vitiated Air Heater for Scramjet test (스크램젯용 공기 가열기 개념연구)

  • This is conceptual study of vitiated air heater(VAH), the necessary ground test facility, for characteristics studies of scramjet combustion and development of scramjet engines. The VAH is one of various types which provided hot air to an intake or a combustion chamber of scramjet and it must use suitable fuel to get hot combustion gas and more similar mixture gas(vitiated air) to real air. In the study, foreign VAHs being capable of providing very high temperature were researched, and injectors for VAH using LNG(CH4) or hydrogen were designed conceptually to develop scramjet vehicle.
