  • This study compares own-brand exporting SMEs' utilization of various government-run exporting service programs that provided support in searching for overseas distributors, in overseas market research, and in marketing support. Researchers measure how important firms found each of these components of the program, as well as firms' satisfaction with these services, based on the type of product exported (industrial vs. consumer goods) and the level of economic development of the host countries (developed, newly industrialized, and developing.) A total of 245 own-brand exporting SMEs were surveyed and analyzed in this study. Results indicated that KOTRA was the most frequently used organization by the sample SMEs, regardless of the product type and the economic level of host countries. Industrial-goods exporting SMEs found support in searching for overseas distributors more important than consumer-goods exporting SMEs. SMEs exporting to developed countries considered overseas market research and marketing support and searching for overseas distributor programs more important than SMEs exporting to NIE or developing countries. In addition, industrial-goods exporting SMEs were more satisfied with the overseas market research and marketing support and searching for overseas distributor programs than consumer-goods exporting SMEs. However, there were no differences in satisfaction among firms based on the level of economic development of host countries. Several cases of significant correlations between the importance of and satisfaction with the utilization of government exporting service programs were found.

  • In this paper, we propose a window based resource reservation scheme to minimize an waste bandwidth due to resource reservation in mobile networks. Specially, this scheme decides a proper timing to reserve resource by using the number of movement, which is provided by the differentiated handoff estimation model, among inner regions. In the previous resource reservation scheme[6], it requests a resource reservation to neighboring cells as soon as a mobile host enters or creates into a cell. But, after a proper time based on the number of movements in the differentiated handoff estimation model passes, the proposed scheme requests a resource reservation to neighboring cells. Because of this reason, it can improve resource utilization on mobile networks. And, this scheme differentiates resource reservation according to a request ratio for resource reservation to each neighboring cell. Also, this scheme improves resource reservation acceptance rate and bandwidth utilization.

  • TCP/IP processing imposes a heavy load on the host CPU when it is processed by the host CPU on a very high-speed network. Recently the TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE), which processes TCP/IP on a network adapter instead of the host CPU, has become an attractive solution to reduce the load in the host CPU. There have been two approaches to implement TOE. One is the software TOE in which TCP/IP is processed by an embedded processor and the other is the hardware TOE in which TCP/IP is processed by a dedicated ASIC. The software TOE has poor performance and the hardware TOE is neither flexible nor expandable enough to add new features. In this paper we designed and implemented a hybrid TOE architecture, in which TCP/IP is processed by cooperation of hardware and software, based on an FPGA that has two embedded processor cores. The hybrid TOE can have high performance by processing time-critical operations such as making and processing data packets in hardware. The software based on the embedded Linux performs operations that are not time-critical such as connection establishment, flow control and congestions, thus the hybrid TOE can have enough flexibility and expandability. To improve the performance of the hybrid TOE, we developed a hardware-based transmission/reception accelerator that processes important operations such as creating data packets. In the experiments the hybrid TOE shows the minimum latency of about $19{\mu}s$. The CPU utilization of the hybrid TOE is below 6 % and the maximum bandwidth of the hybrid TOE is about 675 Mbps.

  • Today, Ethernet technology is rapidly developing to have a bandwidth of 10Gbps beyond 1Gbps. In such high-speed networks, the existing method that host CPU processes TCP/IP in the operating system causes numerous overheads. As a result of the overheads, user applications cannot get the enough computing power from the host CPU. To solve this problem, the TCP/IP Offload Engine(TOE) technology was emerged. TOE is a specialized NIC which processes the TCP/IP instead of the host CPU. In this paper, we implemented a high-performance, lightweight TCP/IP(HL-TCP) for the TOE and applied it to an embedded system. The HL-TCP supports existing fundamental TCP/IP functions; flow control, congestion control, retransmission, delayed ACK, processing out-of-order packets. And it was implemented to utilize Ethernet MAC's hardware features such as TCP segmentation offload(TSO), checksum offload(CSO) and interrupt coalescing. Also we eliminated the copy overhead from the host memory to the NIC memory when sending data and we implemented an efficient DMA mechanism for the TCP retransmission. The TOE using the HL-TCP has the CPU utilization of less than 6% and the bandwidth of 453Mbps.

  • Azoles are currently the most widely used class of antifungal drugs clinically, and are effective for treating fungal infections. Target site of azoles is ergosterol biosynthesis in fungal cell membrane, which is absent in the mammalian host. However, the development of resistance to azole treatments in the fungal pathogen has become a significant challenge. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of a UPC2 homolog in the human pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. UPC2 plays roles in ergosterol biosynthesis, which is also affected by the availability of iron in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. C. neoformans mutants lacking UPC2 were constructed, and a number of phenotypic characteristics, including antifungal susceptibility and iron utilization, were analyzed. No differences were found between the mutant phenotypes and wild type, suggesting that the role of C. neoformans UPC2 homolog may be different from those in S. cerevisiae and C. albicans, and that the gene may have a yet unknown function.

  • A recent major development in computer technology is the advent of wearable computer systems. Wearable computer systems employ a wireless universal serial bus (WUSB), which refers to a combination of USB with the WiMedia wireless technical specifications. In this study, we focus on an integrated system of WUSB over wireless body area networks (WBANs) for wireless wearable computer systems. However, current WBAN MACs do not have well-defined quality of service (QoS) mapping and resource allocation mechanisms to support multimedia streams with the requested QoS parameters. To solve this problem, we propose a novel QoS-aware time slot allocation method. The proposed method provides fair and adaptive QoS provisioning to isochronous streams according to current traffic loads and their requested QoS parameters by executing a QoS satisfaction algorithm at the WUSB/WBAN host. The simulation results show that the proposed method improves the efficiency of time slot utilization while maximizing QoS provisioning.

  • Most studies in the past in testing and benchmarking on Intrusion Detection System (IDS) were conducted as comparisons, rather than evaluation, on different IDSs. This paper presents the evaluation of the performance of one of the open source IDS, snort, in an inexpensive high availability system configuration. Redundancy and fault tolerance technology are used in deploying such IDS, because of the possible attacks that can make snort exhaust resources, degrade in performance and even crash. Several test data are used in such environment and yielded different results. CPU speed, Disk usage, memory utilization and other resources of the IDS host are also monitored. Test results with the proposed system configuration environment shows much better system availability and reliability, especially on security systems.

  • The balance of microbial populations in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of all warm-blooded animals is critical to the maintenance of health and resistance to disease. The composition of the populations can be altered by diet and environment, making the host animal susceptible to disease, and reducing growth rate and feed efficiency. Some feed additives including antimicrobial agents, prohiotics or yucca extract have been used to promote growth and feed utilization. There is evidence that part of growth-promoting effect of those feed additives results from the suppression of microbial urease activity or ammonia production in the GI contents of animals. Over 200 microbial species have been known to produce urease and the product of urea hydrolysis, ammonia, is toxic to animals. Carefully tested probiotics or other urease-suppressing agents can be a possible alternative to antimicrobial agents including antibiotics as growth promotants used for animals feeds.

  • Lilium cv. Casablanca pollen grains stored at $-70^{\circ}C$ were grown in pollen germination medium with Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404 cells harboring pBI121 for 18 hr at $27^{\circ}C$. Following this, cefotaxime (250 mg/L) was treated for 6 hr to eradicate the bacterial cells. Histochemical GUS analysis revealed that the transgenic pollen displayed deep blue color mostly from 12 hr after the co-cultivation. Presence of $200\;{\mu}M$ acetosyringone was determined not to be more effective for GUS transformation than its absence. GUS DNA integration in the transgenic pollen genomic DNA was clearly demonstrated by Southern blot analysis.

  • Cloud computing has recently become a significant technology trend in the IT field. Among the related technologies, desktop virtualization has been applied to various commercial applications since it provides many advantages, such as lower maintenance and operation costs and higher utilization. However, the existing solutions offer a very limited performance for 3D graphics applications. Therefore, we propose a novel method in which rendering commands are not executed at the host server but rather are delivered to the client through the network and are executed by the client's graphics device. This method prominently reduces server overhead and makes it possible to provide a stable service at low cost. The results of various experiments prove that the proposed method outperforms all existing solutions.
