  • In type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) cosmology, a well-established correlation exists between the mass of host galaxies and the Hubble residual (HR) of SNe Ia. In order to investigate the origin of this correlation, we used low-resolution spectroscopic data of early-type host galaxies obtained from our YOnsei Nearby Supernovae Evolution Investigation (YONSEI) project. We measured velocity dispersions and Lick/IDS absorption line indices from these fully calibrated spectra. These indices were used to estimate the luminosity-weighted mean age, metallicity and mass of host galaxies. We found a tight correlation between host mass and population age, which is consistent with the "downsizing" trend in early-type galaxies. This suggests that the well-established correlation between HR and host mass is most likely due to the difference in population age. More observations, which are in progress, are required to understand the impact of luminosity evolution on SNe Ia cosmology.

  • Doping a small amount of a phosphorescent dye into an organic light-emitting diodes(OLED) can lead to a significant improvement in the device properties. The fluorescent host materials like TAZ, CBP have been used, but have a problem of rapid decay of efficiency at high current densities. To alleviate this problem, phosphorescent host was introduced. The whole configuration of OELD fabricated was ITO/a-NPD(50nm)/Zn $cluster:Ir(ppy)_{3}(30nm)/BCP{(10nm)/Alq_{3}(20nm)$ /Al:Li. The OLED showed high luminance (> 50,000 $cd/m^{2}$ ) and external efficiency(5.7%). At higher current densities, rapid decay of external quantum efficiency or host emission, which was frequently observed in the fluorescent host system, were not observed.

  • The electroluminescence (EL) properties were studied in organic light-emitting diodes with a red fluorescent dye, 4- (dicyanomethylene)- 2- tert-butyl-6 (1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)- 4H- pyran (DCJTB) doped into tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum ($Alq_{3}$), rubrene and the mixed matrix of $Alq_3$ and rubrene. The device with DCJTB doped into the $Alq_{3}$:rubrene mixed host shows an efficient red emission from DCJTB with a negligible EL emission from $Alq_{3}$ and a lower EL onset voltage compared to the device with DCJTB doped into the $Alq_{3}$ only host. The quantum efficiency is almost temperature-independent for the device with the $Alq_3:rubrene$ mixed host. The results indicate that recombination of injected electrons and holes occurs on rubrene and subsequent energy transfer to DCJTB dominates in the device with the $Alq_{3}$:rubrene mixed host.

  • Environment has a significant impact on the evolution of dark halo profiles. We used a cosmological N-body simulation based on WMAP5 cosmology to study environmental effects on halo profiles. Host haloes located in sparse regions are highly concentrated, and more massive haloes have higher concentration index. This is because mass accretion affects only the outer part of the halo and consequently increase the virial radius having no effect on the scale radius. Conversely, host haloes located in dense regions have low concentration index. This is because frequent mergers affect even the inner part of the halo. So, scale radius increases with the growth of virial radius. Evolutions of subhalo profiles are essentially different from those of host haloes because subhaloes undergo tidal stripping. The stripping begins once a subhalo approaches closer than ~3 virial radii of the host halo. During the stripping, the inner part of the subhalo keep following NFW profile, but the mass of the outer part gradually decreases. As a result, when the subhalo reaches the pericenter of its host, only about inner 30% of the subhalo follows the NFW profile.

  • Early infection process of Phytophthora capsici in pumpkin stems was similar in the compatible and incompatible interactions 24 h after inoculation. Intercellularly growing hyphae penetrated host parenchyma cells by growing hyphae penetrated host parenchyma cells by forming haustoria. An extrahaustorial matrix was found around the haustoria in both compatible and incompatible interactions. No wall appositions were observed at the infection sites in the parenchyma cells. In the compatible interaction, infecting hyphae grew well in the intercellular spaces between xylem vessels in stem tissues. Degraded host cell wall, plasmolysis of plasma membrane, and degenerated chloroplasts were pathological features of pumpkin stem tissues in both compatible and incompatible interactions. A characteristic host response in the resistant pumkin cultivar Danmatmaetdol was rapid cytoplasmic movement of host cells toward the oomycete haustoria.

  • Ubiquitin is relatively modest in size but involves almost entire cellular signaling pathways. The primary role of ubiquitin is maintaining cellular protein homeostasis. Ubiquitination regulates the fate of target proteins using the proteasome- or autophagy-mediated degradation of ubiquitinated substrates, which can be either intracellular or foreign proteins from invading pathogens. Legionella, a gram-negative intracellular pathogen, hinders the host-ubiquitin system by translocating hundreds of effector proteins into the host cell's cytoplasm. In this review, we describe the current understanding of ubiquitin machinery from Legionella. We summarize structural and biochemical differences between the host-ubiquitin system and ubiquitin-related effectors of Legionella. Some of these effectors act much like canonical host-ubiquitin machinery, whereas others have distinctive structures and accomplish non-canonical ubiquitination via novel biochemical mechanisms.

  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is an etiologic pathogen of human tuberculosis (TB), a serious infectious disease with high morbidity and mortality. In addition, the threat of drug resistance in anti-TB therapy is of global concern. Despite this, it remains urgent to research for understanding the molecular nature of dynamic interactions between host and pathogens during TB infection. While Mtb evasion from phagolysosomal acidification is a well-known virulence mechanism, the molecular events to promote intracellular parasitism remains elusive. To combat intracellular Mtb infection, several defensive processes, including autophagy and apoptosis, are activated. In addition, Mtb-ingested phagocytes trigger inflammation, and undergo necrotic cell death, potentially harmful responses in case of uncontrolled pathological condition. In this review, we focus on Mtb evasion from phagosomal acidification, and Mtb interaction with host autophagy, apoptosis, and necrosis. Elucidation of the molecular dialogue will shed light on Mtb pathogenesis, host defense, and development of new paradigms of therapeutics.

  • New spiro-type host materials, 5'-phenylnaphthyl-spiro[fluorene-7,9'-benzofluorene](BH-lPN) and 5',6-bis(phenylnaphthyl)-spiro[fluorene-7,9'-benzofluorene](BH-6PN) were designed and successfully prepared by the Suzki reaction. The EL characteristics of BH-1PN as blue host material doped with blue dopant materials, BD-1 were evaluated and compared with the existing host MADN:dopant BD-1 system. The structure of the device is ITO/DNTPD/NPB/Host:5% dopant/Alq3/Al-LiF. The device obtained from BH-lPN doped with BD-1 showed a good color purity and efficiency, on the other hand luminance and current-density characteristics are worse than that of MADN doped with BD-1.

  • When Shigella infect host cells, various effecter molecules are delivered into the cytoplasm of the host cell through the type III secretion system (TTSS) to facilitate their invasion process and control the host immune responses. Among these effectors, the S. flexneri effector OspF dephosphorylates mitogen-activated protein kinases and translocates itself to the nucleus, thus preventing histone H3 modification to regulate expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Despite the critical role of OspF, the mechanism by which it localizes in the nucleus has remained to be elucidated. In the present study, we identified a potential small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) modification site within OspF and we demonstrated that Shigella TTSS effector OspF is conjugated with SUMO in the host cell and this modification mediates the nuclear translocation of OspF. Our results show a bacterial virulence factor can exploit host post-translational machinery to execute its intracellular trafficking.
