Association between Physical activity and Depressive Symptoms among Korean Male Workers (일개 제조업 남성근로자에서 신체활동과 우울증상과의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the association between level of physical activity and depressive symptoms among Korean male workers. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed and anthropometric measurements were conducted with 1,379 male workers during a general health check. From this data, we identified the general characteristics, levels of physical activity(IPAQ), and depressive symptoms(CES-D) of the study population. We conducted univariate logistic regression to verify the variables that affect depressive symptoms and multivariate logistic regression to calculate odds ratios. Results: Among the 1,379 male workers, 43.4% were in the insufficiently active group(IPAQ category 1) and 22.8% were in the depressive symptom group($CES-D{\geq}16$). The odds ratio(OR) for depressive symptoms was statistically higher in the insufficiently active group, workers aged over 30, the shift work group, and the unmarried group. Adjusted for those variables, the ORs for depressive symptoms were found to be 1.45(95% CI=1.25-2.11), 1.15(OR=1.15, 95% CI=1.08-1.99) and 1.75(95% CI=1.48-2.02), for the insufficiently active group, workers aged over 30, and the shift work group, respectively. Conclusions: We found physical inactivity, age, marital status, and shift work to be associated with depressive symptoms among male workers. This study supports the suggestion that physical activity can be helpful to reduce depressive symptoms among workers.

Ergonomic evaluation and improving measures of tasksperformed in a general hospital (종합 병원 종사자 업무의 인간공학적 평가 및 개선 방안)

  • The objectives of this study were to ergonomically evaluate varying tasks performed in a general hospital and to propose their improving measures based on the evaluation results. The tasks found in the hospital were largely classified into two groups of manual materials handling and awkward posture related tasks. Ergonomic tools of NLE, 3-D SSPP and RULA were used for evaluating workload of the tasks. The major findings are: 1) L5/S1 compressive force of patient transferring by one person exceeded the maximum permissible limit(6,400N) by NIOSH. The L5/S1 compressive forces for most of the patient transferring tasks by 2-4 persons were larger than the action limit (3,400N), and the tasks by five persons were analyzed to be safe in the view of L5/S1 compressive force; 2) patient repositioning tasks by 2-3 persons were hazardous on the basis of L5/S1 compressive force, while most of the tasks by 4-5 persons were safe; 3) many tasks performed in wards were found to be stressful, most of which resulted from improper heights of their working tables or working points. Of varying tasks in general hospitals, patient transferring was the most stressful. Based on the results of this study and high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders from other studies, it is recommended that the ergonomics program be introduced and enforced for doing improving activities systematically

Factors of Stress and Rehabilitation Motivation among Orthopedic Hospital Inpatients at a Military Hospital (군병원 정형외과 입원환자의 스트레스 및 재활동기 영향 요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting rehabilitation motivation in hospitalized orthopedic patients. Methods: Data were collected from June 1th to July 31th, 2019 and structured questionnaires were used. Study subjects were 97 orthopedic patients who received fixed treatment more than two weeks and started rehabilitation exercise in a military hospital. The data were summarized using descriptive statistics and analyzed by t-test or one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were run in SPSS 20.0 program. Results: The results of this study may be summarized as follows. (1) The demographic characteristics that showed differences in rehabilitation motivation were marital status, age and the ranks of the armed forces. The rehabilitation motivation of married, older than 31, officer ranked soldiers turned out to be higher than those of singles, younger than 30, non-officers, respectively. (2) The results of Pearson's correlation analysis showed that independent variables were all correlated significantly each other. (3) The results of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the factors influencing rehabilitation motivation were family social support, medical personnel's social support and the level of military life adaption. Conclusions: The rehabilitation motivation of hospitalized soldiers may be improved by receiving supports from family members and medical personnels and by adapting to military life. Military medical workers need to explore nursing strategies that help hospitalized orthopedic patients increase their own rehabilitation motivation.

The Influence of Inservice Training on Organizational Socialization of New Dental Hygienists (신규치과위생사의 직무교육이 조직사회화에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of this study was to provide basic data that could give a positive effect for both new dental hygienists and dental institutions by identifying the impact of one the job training on the organizational socialization, targeting 162 new dental hygienists who currently worked in dental clinic. The data were analyzed using the chi-squire, independent-samples t-test, hierarchical regression analysis. It was shown that the characteristics and contents of a duration of inservice training for new dental hygienists, difficulty, satisfaction, and details of on-the-job training affected organizational socialization by 26.1%. The factor that had the greatest impact on the organizational socialization was dental hygiene service training, followed by guidance of hospital service regulations. This study was significant in that it applied the concept of organizational socialization to the dental hygienists. The future study on the more effective and systematic training program will be needed to help new dental hygienists be socialized more effectively in the new organization.

An Analysis on the Purchase Satisfaction, Repurchase Intention and Recommendation according Toothpaste Choice Standard (치약선택기준에 따른 구매만족, 재구매 의도 및 권유 의사 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the buying behavior characteristics of the customers. Also, it was intended to provide information to provide companies marketing strategy. The criteria of purchasing toothpaste was to try to understand the impact on satisfaction, recommendation and repurchase Intention. The study was surveyed 248 customers who re-buy the toothpaste in oral care products showroom at university dental hospital. Statistical analysis was performed using PASW Statistics 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 at the 5% significance level. The results were as follows: 'Flavor', 'Price', 'Brand', 'Function', 'Design' of toothpaste and satisfaction showed a positive correlation. Satisfaction and repurchase intention, Recommendation showed a positive correlation. Selection criteria that affect the satisfaction when customers buy toothpaste, 'Function' was the greatest and others became the order of the 'Brand', 'Flavor', 'Price'. Satisfaction affect the recommendation and repurchase Intention. If customers are satisfied with the toothpaste products, showed the Repurchase Intention, have shown opinion that is willing to recommend this product to others. Therefore, dentistry and manufacturers of toothpaste must share a lot of information about toothpaste with customers. Also, information, function, flavor of toothpaste as well as other oral care product, It will be a needed the continuing research and development.

The relationship between the professional self-concept of dental hygiene and organizational socialization (치과위생사의 전문직 자아개념과 조직사회화의 관련성)

  • Background: Based on the individualistic approach of experienced dental hygienists, this study attempted to provide basic data to find effective measures of human resource management by analyzing the correlation between organizational socialization and professional self-concept. Methods: Dental hygienists currently working in the Daegu area were evaluated. Nine questions related to duties, twenty-seven questions related to professional self-concept, and thirty-eight questions related to organizational socialization were included in the study. The reliability was professional self-concept (Cronbach's α = 0.859) and organizational socialization (Cronbach's α = 0.840). Results: Of the total 135 points for professional self-concept, the mean score of the participants was 62.67±8.45 points. In the sub-area, flexibility was the highest at 19.28±2.46 points, and communication was the lowest at 9.69±1.44 points. Of 190 points, organizational socialization averaged at 123.40±12.82 points. In the subarea, personal characteristics were the highest at 30.37±3.71 points, and occupational identity was the lowest at 10.34±1.94. Higher age (F=30.89, p<0.000), marital status (F=10.22, p<0.002), graduate or higher educational qualification (F=9.16, p<0.000), were associated with a higher position (F=20.62, p<0.000) and work experience (F=22.66, p<0.0000), when there was no intention to turnover (F=8.05, p<0.000). Organizational socialization was higher in participants with higher age (F=7.89, p<0.000), educational qualification (F=8.02, p<0.000), and position (F=5.12, p<0.007); higher work experience in general hospital (F=4.50, p<0.012); no intention to turnover (F=7.450, p<0.000); and no intention to turnover (F=24.46, p<0.000). Organizational socialization showed a significant positive correlation with professional self-concept (r=0.721, p<0.000); job performance and skills (r=0.615, p<0.000) and organizational commitment and satisfaction (r=0.610, p<0.000) showed a high positive correlation. Turnover intention (β=0.213, p<0.000) was found to have a significant effect on organizational socialization. Leadership (β=0.168, p<0.05) and satisfaction (β=0.483, p<0.000) were found to have a significant effect. The total explanatory power of this variable was 62.7%. Conclusion: To ensure successful organizational socialization, human resource management should be performed through regular verification, which can result in improved quality of dental care services.

Effectiveness of virtual reality-based oral muscle strength training on oral function in older adults (노인 대상 가상현실 기반 구강 근력 강화 훈련의 구강 기능 개선 효과)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to develop a virtual reality (VR)-based oral strength training program and apply it to older adults to assess improvements in oral function. Methods: The oral strength training was conducted 12 times over 6 weeks, from late August to early October 2023, at the participants' institution. Each session lasted approximately 60 minutes. Forty-one participants aged 65 and older were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. Results: Following the VR-based oral muscle strength training, the O'Leary index decreased by 0.42 (p<0.01), and the Löe & Silness index decreased by 1.11 (p<0.01). Additionally, there was a 1.24 reduction in tongue tie (p<0.01) and a 0.55 increase in salivation (p<0.05). Post hoc comparisons revealed significant differences between the two groups in gingival bacterial film (p<0.001), gingivitis (p<0.001), and tongue plaque (p<0.01). Conclusions: The study found that VR-based oral muscle strength training can improve oral health among older adults. Therefore, the VR-based oral muscle strength training program developed in this study could be beneficial in health promotion programs for the elderly.

Effects of smartphone app-based oral muscle strength training on functional improvement in the elderly (노인 대상 스마트폰 앱 콘텐츠를 이용한 구강 근력 강화 훈련의 기능 개선 효과)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to develop educational content for a smartphone app on oral muscle training and examine its effects on the elderly population. Methods: A total of twelve training sessions were delivered through the smartphone app over a six-week period, from late August to early October 2023. Each session lasted approximately 60 minutes. Participants were followed up after the program. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in oral health before and after using the smartphone app. These improvements included decreased dental plaque (p<0.05) by 0.69 units, decreased gingivitis (p<0.001) by 0.99 units, decreased tongue plaque (p<0.01) by 1.11 units, increased salivary secretion rate (p<0.001) by 0.73 units, increased hard palate strength (p<0.001) by 5.25 units, and increased soft palate strength (p<0.01) by 6.82 units. Compared to the control group, the experimental group showed significant improvements in dental plaque (p<0.001), gingivitis (p<0.001), and tongue coating (p<0.01). Conclusions: This study found that oral muscle strengthening training using the smartphone app effectively improved oral health in the elderly. The developed app content has the potential to be a valuable tool for promoting oral health in this population within their daily routines. However, further efforts are needed to ensure clear communication and effective utilization of the training program through user training or educational materials.

Associations between Physical Factors and Working Conditions and Occupational Injuries among Korean Workers (한국 근로자에서의 물리적 인자 및 근무여건과 직업성 손상 간의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between physical factors, working conditions and occupational injuries among Korean workers. Methods: We used data from the 2nd Korean Working Conditions Survey, conducted in 2010. A total of 7,114 workers over 15 years of age were selected from among 10,019 Korean workers. The participants were interviewed using questionnaires. A multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the associations among physical factors, working conditions and occupational injuries. Results: After the adjustment of socio-demographic factors, the odds ratio of injuries through physical factors such as vibration (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] 4.037, 95% CI 2.30-7.09), noise (aOR 4.562, 95% CI 2.64-7.89), high temperature (aOR 3.262, 95% CI 1.86-5.73), and low temperature (aOR 3.358, 95% CI 1.76-6.41) were greater in the exposed group than in the non-exposed group. The odds ratios of occupational injury(aOR 5.272, 95% CI 3.19-8.7 for very high speed work, aOR 3.303, 95% CI 1.95-5.60 for tight deadlines, and aOR 3.641, 95% CI 1.72-7.70 for not enough time to work) increased with increased work demands. Conclusions: In this study, physical factors such as vibration, noise, and high and low temperatures were significantly correlated with occupational injuries according to the increase in exposure intensity(p for trend <0.001). Also, working conditions such as high-speed work, tight deadlines and insufficient time to work showed significant associations with occupational injuries(p for trend<0.001).

Lead Exposure Status of Smelt Process Workers in Steelmaking using Scrap Iron (제강공장 고철 용해공정 근로자의 납 노출실태)

  • Objectives: This study was aimed at the examination of the lead exposure status of smelting process workers in steelmaking using scrap iron. Methods: The study was conducted from July to September 2012 by means of measurements taken during the smelting process, with 45 minutes set for a one-time smelting work cycle when it comes to personal air sample and area air sample. As such, daily work hours were classified into 360 minutes for measurement. The analysis of lead concentration was conducted using AAs based on the NIOSH 7300 method. Results: In the case of the personal specimens that were subjected to periodical measurement 45 minutes per one session during the smelting process, 40 out of 42 specimens measured were found to contain lead, with an average concentration level of $0.028mg/m^3$ (Max: $0.182mg/m^3$, Min: $0.005mg/m^3$, TWA-more than 50%: 4 out of 6 units). In the case of regional specimens, lead was detected in 45 out of 48 specimens measured, with an average concentration level of $0.037mg/m^3$ (Max: $0.220mg/m^3$, Min: $0.007mg/m^3$ ). In the case of regional specimens subjected to measurement using a day as the work cycle, lead was detected in 15 out of 15 specimens measured, with an average concentration level of $0.049mg/m^3$ (Max: $0.478mg/m^3$, Min: $0.005mg/m^3$ ). Conclusions: It concluded that smelting process workers in steelmaking are exposed to lead because scrap iron is used as a raw material. It is thus necessary to introduce legal management to prevent occupation-related disease in smelting process workers in steelmaking.
