"그린 하모니" - 대학생의 전인건강을 위한 원예치료 프로그램 ("Green Harmony" - The Horticultural Therapy Program for Holistic Health of College Students)

  • This research was to find out the effectiveness of the horticultural therapy program based on the therapeutic factors and the most meaningful experiences of the clients. For this purpose "Green harmony" program focused on harmony through horticulture was implemented. It is based on the preposition that holistic health is promoted with harmonious relationships with oneself, other people, community and nature. The program has three-fold structure: In innermost it deals with the task of the late adolescent, i.e., self identity, secondly the experience of communication and solidarity in the group, and finally extension of interest to the community. For the therapeutic intervention, questions using the metaphor of the activity were given to the clients for the establishment of self-identity, while group activity and the donation of the works let the second and third purpose accomplished. Outdoor activity, 'Tire garden project', has provided the clients with chances of the contact with nature, cooperation with other group members, and a contest to provoke enthusiasm. Also recycling and greening of the community were possible by utilizing old tires for the containers and by donating the final works to the community. For the evaluation of the result, the effect of the program on the stress of the college students was tested, and the most meaningful experiences during the participation to the program were asked to identify the therapeutic factors acknowledged by clients. "Green harmony" program has brought positive effects on the stress of the clients in spite of relatively short period of five weeks. The clients has acknowledged plant/nature contact and interactions between group members for the most meaningful experiences. This research suggests "Green harmony" horticultural therapy program based on the therapeutic factors is highly applicable for the general populations.

Anti-inflammatory activity of Ganoderma lucidum by inhibition of NF-κB p65 phosphorylation

  • Ganoderma lucidum, an oriental polypore fungus and medicinal mushroom, has a long history of use for promoting health and longevity in Korea, China, and other Asian countries. This study was aimed at determining the anti-inflammatory activity and mechanism of action of Ganoderma lucidum in murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Ganoderma lucidum was extracted with ethanol and freeze-dried. The anti-inflammatory effect (nitrite production) of Ganoderma lucidum extracts was tested using a nitric oxide (NO) colorimetric assay. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to quantify the mRNA expression of cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$), interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$, and IL-6. Western blotting was performed to measure the expression levels of inflammation-related proteins, such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nuclear factor kappa B ($NF-{\kappa}B$) p65, and phosphorylated $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65. The NO colorimetric assay showed that NO production increased with the treatment of lipopolysaccharide in (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages and decreased with the cotreatment of Ganoderma lucidum extracts and LPS. Ganoderma lucidum extracts repressed the mRNA expressions of cytokines, which were increased after the LPS treatment. In addition, Ganoderma lucidum extracts inhibited the LPS-induced expression of iNOS and COX-2 and the LPS-induced phosphorylation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65. These results suggest that the Ganoderma lucidum extracts exert an anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting $NF-{\kappa}B$ related proteins and cytokines.

선씀바귀 추출물의 항산화 및 항당뇨 효과 (Antioxidant and anti-diabetic effects of Ixeris strigosa extract)

  • 본 연구는 선씀바귀의 항산화 및 탄수화물 소화효소 억제 효과를 평가하여 제 2형 당뇨환자에게 중요한 항산화제 및 혈당 상승 억제제로서의 가능성을 타진하고자 하였다. 선씀바귀 추출물의 총 폴리페놀, 플라보노이드 함량과 in vitro 항산화 활성 및 소화효소 저해 활성을 조사한 결과 ISE가 ISW보다 총페놀과 플라보노이드 함량이 높았고 항산화 활성 및 소화효소 저해 활성 또한 높았다. ISE의 계통분획물 중에 에틸아세테이트 분획물과 부탄올 분획물의 소화효소 저해 활성이 가장 우수하고, 추출물의 항산화활성과 탄수화물 소화효소 억제효과가 총 페놀 및 플라보노이드함량과 높은 상관성을 가지는 것으로 볼 때, ISW에 비해 상대적으로 높은 ISE의 항산화 및 소화효소 저해 활성은 페놀 화합물, 특히 플라보노이드 화합물 때문임을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 ISE와 에틸아세테이트 그리고 부탄올 분획물은 우수한 항당뇨 기능성 소재라고 판단된다.

Functional Components and Antioxidant Effects of Colored Onions

  • The antioxidant capacities, total phenolic contents (TPC), and total quercetin contents (TQC) of a red (Chenjujuck), a yellow (Sunpower), and a white (Grasier) onion cultivar were determined in this study. Onion was separated into edible portion and dry skin. In the case of edible portion, the yellow onion had the highest antioxidant activity, followed by the red onion. The white onion showed neither antioxidant activity nor quercetin compounds. On the other hand, the dry skin of the red onion showed higher antioxidant activity than yellow onion skin. The white onion skin had slight antioxidant activity, low TPC, and no quercetin compounds. In addition, the flavonoid compounds of the edible portion and dry skins of these colored onions were analyzed by UFLC(ultra-fast liquid chromatography). The major compounds were quercetin 3,4-diglucoside and quercetin 4-glucoside in yellow and red onion edible portion, whereas the major compounds in yellow and red onion skins were quercetin 4-glucoside, quercetin, and quercetin 3,4-diglucoside.

Antibacterial Activity of Cinnamaldehyde and Estragole Extracted from Plant Essential Oils against Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae Causing Bacterial Canker Disease in Kiwifruit

  • Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) causes bacterial canker disease in kiwifruit. Antibacterial activity of plant essential oils (PEOs) originating from 49 plant species were tested against Psa by a vapor diffusion and a liquid culture assays. The five PEOs from Pimenta racemosa, P. dioica, Melaleuca linariifolia, M. cajuputii, and Cinnamomum cassia efficiently inhibited Psa growth by either assays. Among their major components, estragole, eugenol, and methyl eugenol showed significant antibacterial activity by only the liquid culture assay, while cinnamaldehyde exhibited antibacterial activity by both assays. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of estragole and cinnamaldehyde by the liquid culture assay were 1,250 and 2,500 ppm, respectively. The MIC of cinnamaldehyde by the vapor diffusion assay was 5,000 ppm. Based on the formation of clear zones or the decrease of optical density caused by these compounds, they might kill the bacterial cells and this feature might be useful for managing the bacterial canker disease in kiwifruit.

농촌지역 초등학생들에 있어서 원예활동이 자아존중감 및 성취동기에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Horticultural Activity on Self-esteem and Achievement Motivation of the Elementary School Students in Rural Areas)

  • 이 연구는 농촌지역 초등학생을 대상으로 원예활동 프로그램을 실시하여 자아존중감 및 성취동기에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해 실시하였다. 경남의 농촌지역에 위치한 C 초등학교 4학년을 실험집단과 대조집단으로 나누어 매주 1회(3시간)씩 12주 동안 실시하였다. 원예활동 프로그램을 실시한 실험집단은 대조집단에 비하여 자아존중감이 향상되었고 통계적으로도 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.001). 또한 실험집단은 대조집단에 비하여 성취동기가 증진되었으며 통계적으로도 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.001). 따라서 원예활동 프로그램은 농촌지역 초등학생들의 자아존중감을 향상시키며 성취동기를 증진시키는데 효과적임을 알 수 있었다.

A Horticultural Therapy Program Focusing on Gardening Activities to Promote Psychological, Emotional and Social Health of the Elderly Living in a Homeless Living Facility for a Long Time: A Pilot Study

  • Background and objective: The elderly living in homeless living facilities for a long time suffer from various mental health problems. This study aims to determine the psychological, emotional, and social effects of a horticultural therapy program composed of gardening activities, which was designed based on the semantic structures of life for the homeless elderly living in the facilities for a long time. Methods: A total of 12 subjects (6 in the control group and 6 in the experimental group) participated in the study. The horticultural therapy program consisted mainly of gardening activities, and a total of 16 sessions were conducted once a week for 16 weeks, 60-90 minutes per session. The subjects were tested to evaluate their self-esteem, depression, and horticultural activities. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon rank test, and Friedman test, which were nonparametric tests, conducted at a 95% significance level. Results: First, in the case of self-esteem, a significant difference was found between the groups, 20.00 points (SD = 5.69) in the control group, and 25.50 points (SD = 3.73) in the experimental group (p = .034). Second, in the case of depression, no statistically significant difference was found in the posttest. Finally, in the case of the horticultural activity evaluation, the scores of most variables gradually and significantly increased during the program [Verbal interaction during activity (p = .006), Self-concept and identity (p = .006), Need-drive adaptation (p < .001), Interpersonal and social relations (p < .001)]. Conclusion: These results support that the horticultural therapy program could help the elderly improve psychological relaxation, emotional stability, and social relationships. In order to generalize the results, it is suggested to increase the number of subjects or conduct additional repetitive experiments in further research.

마늘추출액의 식물병원균에 대한 억제 효과 (Inhibitory Effect of Garlic Extracts on Some Plant Pathogens)

  • 4품종(남도마늘, 고흥마늘, 단양마늘, 중국산 수입마늘)의 마늘추출액의 식물병원세균과 진균에 대한 항균효과를 조사하였다. 실내실험에서 마늘추출액은 그람양성세균, 그람음성세균, 진균 모두에 좋은 항균효과를 나타내었다. 본 연구에 사용된 4품종의 마늘추출액 중 남도마늘과 중국산 수입마늘이 보다 좋은 항균효과를 나타내었다. 그람양성세균인 Clavibacter michiganensis가 마늘추출액에 가장 민감하였으며, Burkholderia cepacia가 가장 저항성이 컸다. 마늘추출액을 이용한 오이 흰가루병에 대한 항균효과 포장실험에서는 59.7${\sim}$61.9%의 방제가를 보여주었다.

마늘오일을 이용한 오이와 토마토 흰가루병 방제 (Control of Powdery Mildew by Garlic Oil in Cucumber and Tomato)

  • 4종류의 식물 추출 오일(마늘, 생강, 계피, 레몬그라스)에 대한 실내 항균효과를 5종의 식물병원세균과 4종의 식물병원진균에 대해 조사하였다. 4종의 오일중 마늘오일과 계피오일의 항균효과가 우수하였다. 특히, 마늘오일은 식물병원세균인 Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Erwinia carotovora, Ralstonia solanacearum, Xanthomonas campestris와 식물병원진균인 Phytophthora infestans, Fusarium oxysporum, Collectotricum sp.에 대해 강한 항균력을 나타내었다. 그러나, Acidovorax avenae와 Pythium sp.에 대해서는 항균효과가 없었다. 마늘오일의 오이 흰가루병(Sphaerotheca fusca)과 토마토 흰가루병(Erysiphe cichoracearum)에 대한 포장 방제효과 실험결과 각각 70.0-74.6%와 71.2%의 방제가를 나타내었다.
