  • In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method which extracts directional features of handwritten numerals by using the projection runlength. Our directional featrures are obtained from four directional images, each of which contains horizontal, vertical, right-diagonal and left-diagonal lines in entire numeral shape respectively. A conventional method which extracts directional features by using Kirsch masks generates edge-shaped double line directional images for four directions, whereas our method uses the projections and their runlengths for four directions to produces single line directional images for four directions. To obtain the directional projections for four directions from a numeral image, some preprocessing steps such as thinning and dilation are required, but the shapes of resultant directional lines are more similar to the numeral lines of input numerals. Four [$4{\times}4$] directional features of a numeral are obtained from four directional line images through a zoning method. By using a hybrid feature which is made by combining our feature with the conventional features of a mesh features, a kirsch directional feature and a concavity feature, higher recognition rates of the handwrittern numerals can be obtained. For recognition test with given features, we use a multi-layer perceptron neural network classifier which is trained with the back propagation algorithm. Through the experiments with the handwritten numeral database of Concordia University, we have achieved a recognition rate of 97.85%.

  • The Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui (兩景揆日儀) is a kind of elevation sundial using three wooden plates. Sang-hyeok Lee (李尙爀, 1810~?) and Byeong-cheol Nam (南秉哲, 1817~1863) gave descriptions of this sundial and explained how to use it in their Gyu-il-go (揆日考) and Ui-gi-jip-seol (儀器輯說), respectively. According to Gyu-il-go (揆日考) there are two horizontal plates and two vertical plates that have lines of season and time. Subseasonal (節候) lines are engraved between seasonal (節氣) lines, subdividing the interval into three equal lines of Cho-hu (初候, early subseason), Jung-hu (中候, mid subseason) and Mal-hu (末候, late subseason); there are 13 seasonal lines for a year, thus resulting in 37 subseasonal lines; also, there are 12 double-hour (時辰) lines for a day engraved on these plates. The only remaining artifact of Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui was made in 1849 (the $15^{th}$ year of Heon-jong) and is kept at the Korea University Museum. We have compared and analyzed Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui and similar western sundials. Also, we have reviewed the scientific aspect of this artifact and built a replica. Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui is a new model enhanced from the miniaturization development in the early Joseon Dynasty and can be applied to the southern part of the tropic line through a structure change.

  • The dynamic and structural responses of a 1000-m long circular submerged floating tunnel (SFT) with both ends fixed under survival irregular-wave excitations are investigated. The floater-mooring nonlinear and elastic coupled dynamics are modeled by a time-domain numerical simulation program, OrcaFlex. Two configurations of mooring lines i.e., vertical mooring (VM) and inclined mooring (IM), and four different buoyancy-weight ratios (BWRs) are selected to compare their global performances. The result of modal analysis is included to investigate the role of the respective natural frequencies and elastic modes. The effects of various submergence depths are also checked. The envelopes of the maximum/minimum horizontal and vertical responses, accelerations, mooring tensions, and shear forces/bending moments of the entire SFT along the longitudinal direction are obtained. In addition, at the mid-section, the time series and the corresponding spectra of those parameters are also presented and analyzed. The pros and cons of the two mooring shapes and high or low BWR values are systematically analyzed and discussed. It is demonstrated that the time-domain numerical simulation of the real system including nonlinear hydro-elastic dynamics coupled with nonlinear mooring dynamics is a good method to determine various design parameters.

  • Natural convection heat transfer has been investigated numerically in the vertical annulus filled withsaturated porous material for the aspect ratio less than unity. The inner wall of the annulus is exposed to constant heat flux condition and the outer wall is cooled to keep isothermal condition. The upper and the lower horizontal wall are assumed to be insulated. Under conditions ranging 50 .leq. Ra .leq. 10000, 1 .leq. RD .leq. 12, the characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been investigated. The results show that average Nusselt numbers increase when the radius ratio increases and the multicellular flows are not detected under the present conditions. Isothermal lines are plotted within the porous media. Temperatures of the inner wall with constant heat flux conditions and the local heat flux rate of the cooled outer wall with constant temperature are also obtained.

  • The galloping of iced conductors has long been a severe threat to the safety of overhead transmission lines. Compared with normal transmission lines, the ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission lines are more prone to galloping, and the damage caused is more severe. To control the galloping of UHV lines, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis of galloping characteristics. In this paper, a large-span 1000-kV UHV transmission line in China is taken as a practical example where an 8-bundled conductor with D-shaped icing is adopted. Galerkin method is employed for the time history calculation. For the wind attack angle range of 0°~180°, the galloping amplitudes in vertical, horizontal, and torsional directions are calculated. Furthermore, the vibration frequencies and galloping shapes are analyzed for the most severe conditions. The results show that the wind at 0°~10° attack angles can induce large torsional displacement, and this range of attack angles is also most likely to occur in reality. The galloping with largest amplitudes in all three directions occurs at the attack angle of 170° where the incoming flow is at the non-iced side, due to the strong aerodynamic instability. In addition, with wind speed increasing, galloping modes with higher frequencies appear and make the galloping shape more complex, indicating strong nonlinear behavior. Based on the galloping amplitudes of three directions, the full range of wind attack angles are divided into five galloping regions of different severity levels. The results obtained can promote the understanding of galloping and provide a reference for the anti-galloping design of UHV transmission lines.

  • Anatomical shape of the mandibular ramus, which includes the area from the rear of the mandibular second molar to the mandibular posterior border and from the mandibular sigmoid notch to the inferior mandibular border, must be carefully considered to perform orthognathic surgery. The locations of the lingula and mandibular foramen in medial side of mandibular ramus are one of the most important factors to decide the location of the horizontal medial osteotomy in sagittal split ramus osteotomy and to select the line of vertical osteotomy in intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy. Sixty-five different Korean human dry mandibles were surveyed. All mandible have permanent dentition including complete eruption of the mandibular second molar. The locations of the lingula and mandibular foramen in medial side of the ramus were identified and following results were obtained. Anterior ramal horizontal distance from lingula was $16.13{\pm}3.53mm(range:8.6{\sim}24.3mm)$, anterior ramal horizontal distance from mandibular foramen was $23.91{\pm}4.79mm(range: 14.1{\sim}39.7mm)$, horizontal width of mandibular foramen was $2.79{\pm}0.95mm(range:1.5{\sim}6.1mm)$, height of lingula was $10.51{\pm}3.84mm(range:3.1{\sim}22.4mm)$, vertical distance from sigmoid notch to lingula was $19.82{\pm}5.11mm(range:9.1{\sim}35.3mm)$. From this study, the result could be used to select the location of osteotomy lines and to decide amount of periosteal elevation to avoid injury of neurovascular bundle, and to accomplish the appropriate split in Korean patients in mandibular orthognathic surgery.

  • The plastic arts is used when designers draw inspirations to create fashion design. The author referred to fashion magazines for designing ideas of Mondrian's geometrical abstract painting in practical applications used by designers in Paris, Italy, London and New York during the 10-year period(1991-2000). The collections of data were analyzed as following: ◇ Fashion Designing Idea 1. Matching Idea The art is reproduced in the design as how it is with no transformation. First, the painting's complete figure is reproduced on the entire or parts of clothing. Second, the painting's partial figure is reproduced on the entire or parts of clothing. 2. Contrasting Ideas The composition elements in Mondrian's geometrical abstract painting, for example, structures of shapes, vertical and horizontal lines and different colors are applied in the design. First, one particular shape in painting is transformed into different shape of square, circle or triangle and reproduced in designing. Second, one particular shape in painting is disassembled and then reshaped into different form in reproduction. Third, additional lines are put in to create different look from the original painting. Forth, existing lines are extended over the boundary to create different look from the original painting. Fifth, achromatic colors: black and white, and three basic colors: red, blue and yellow in the original painting are modified into different shades or color scheme is increased in broad range.

  • Lines of non-extension (LoNEs) on torso surface during arm abduction were investigated to provide appropriate location for inserting less-extensible yarns which can be used as seams for design and or clothing pressure variation. As experimental methods, reference points about 3 cm apart were marked on the skin and scanned at 30, $90^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ arm abduction. Skin deformation was measured by connecting reference points in horizontal, vertical and various angles of diagonal directions. Observation of skin deformation was made within the separated sections of the torso as well as integrated ones to cover the various occasions of design application. LoNEs of front and back torso were provided as mapping lines. Actual compression wear of three types was constructed with different pattern reduction rate at each separated section using LoNEs as boundary cutting lines. Clothing pressure and subjective evaluations of those three compression wear were evaluated by six subjects. LoNEs found in this study were useful as seam lines to differentiate clothing pressure at each part of the body, providing positive wear sensation. It is also expected that LoNEs can be paths for less strechable conductive yarns of IT-integrated upper garments.

  • It is often assumed that text regions in images are characterized by some distinctive or characteristic spatial frequencies. This feature is highly intuitive, and thus appealing as much. We propose a method of detecting horizontal texts in natural scene images. It is based on the use of two features that can be employed separately or in succession: the frequency of edge pixels across vertical and horizontal scan lines, and the fundamental frequency in the Fourier domain. We confirmed that the frequency features are language independent. Also addressed is the detection of quadrilaterals or approximate rectangles using Hough transform. Since texts that is meaningful to many viewers usually appear within rectangles with colors in high contrast to the background. Hence it is natural to assume the detection rectangles may be helpful for locating desired texts correctly in natural outdoor scene images.
