  • The relationship between the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and the surface air temperature (SAT) in the Korean Peninsula is investigated for the period of 1979~2019. The QBO shows a statistically significant causal relationship with the Korean SAT in early spring when the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)'s effect is relatively weak. In particular, when the QBO wind at 70 hPa is westerly, the Korean SAT becomes colder than normal in March. This relationship in March, which is statistically significant, is valid not only for March QBO but also for February QBO, indicating that the QBO is leading the Korean SAT. The Granger causality test indeed shows a causal relationship between February QBO and March Korean SAT. The QBO-Korean SAT relationship is more pronounced in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. As the QBO-related circulation anomalies are evident in the North Pacific and the eastern Eurasia, they induce the horizontal temperature advection to the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. This result suggests that the QBO could be useful for improving seasonal prediction of the Korean SAT in March.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between GMS image data and hourly observed rainfalls data. Heavy rainfall cases over South Korea on 10th September 1990 and on 29th July 1993 were selected for studying of the relationship between the image data and reinfalls. First, image data were converted to TBB(Temperature of Black Body) and albedo and then these values were extracted for the pixels closest to the surface observation station to correlate with the rainfall data. Horizontal distribution of TBB and albedo tells roughly rainfall regions. The correlation between rainfall and TBB is found to be very low in quantitative analysis. The weak relationship between the brighter albedo and the higher rainfall probability is observed. This study suggests that the TBB values are useful in classifying rain areas and for heavy rainfalls the albedo values are more useful than the TBB. Low linear correlation between the fields may be attributed to the neglect of cloud types in this study.

  • Large Concrete Panel Structures behave quite differently from frame or monolithic shear wall structures because of the weakness of Joint in stiffness and strength. The joint experiences large deformation such as shear-slip in vertical and horizontal joint and rocking and crushing in horizontal joint because of localized stress concentration, but the wall panels behave elastically under cyclic loads. In order to describe the nonlinear behavior of the joint in the analysis of PC structures, different analysis technique from that of RC structures is needed. In this paper, for analysis of large concrete panel subassemblage subjected to cyclic loads, the wall panels are idealized by elastic finite elements, and the joints by nonlinear spring elements with various load-deflection relationship. The analytical results are compared with the experimental results on the strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and lateral drift, and the effectiveness of this computer analysis modelling technique is checked.

  • Surface roughness is one of the most important characteristics in machining processes. This study presents probabilistic models to estimate surface roughness experimentally in multi-pass horizontal surface grinding operations from three independent distributions such as the initial surface roughness distributions of workpiece, the distributions of the wheel radius, and the distributions of distances between major active grains. To specify the model characteristics from surface roughness measurements, either the probability satisfying a given surface roughness or the range of surface roughness satisfying a given probability have been estimated while grinding conditions are fixed. Finally, the relationship between grinding conditions satisfying surface roughness range under a given probability can be established.

  • This paper aims to empirically identify the effects of FTAs on outward and inward FDIs in Korea. Considering the income differences between Korea and its FTA partners, we hypothesize that FTAs have a positive effect on outward FDI to developing countries and inward FDI from developed countries. An underlying source of the hypothesis is the Knowledge-Capital model, addressing the positive (negative) relationship between trade costs and horizontal (vertical) FDI. We test for the hypothesis using data on Korea's FTAs and FDI over the period 2000-2010. We find that our empirical results support the hypothesis, and additionally, FTAs in general encourage FDI by creating an FDI-friendly environment.

  • A full-scale synchronized data acquisition system was set up on the roof of the experimental building at the Texas Tech University Wind Engineering Research Field Laboratory to simultaneously collect approaching wind data, conical vortex images, and roof corner suction pressure data. One-second conditional sampling technique has been applied in the data analysis, which makes it possible to separately evaluate the influencing effects of the horizontal wind angle of attack, ${\theta}$, and the vertical wind angle of attack, ${\varphi}$. Results show a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the incident wind, conical vortices, and the induced roof-corner high-suction pressures. The horizontal wind angle of attack, ${\theta}$, is shown to be the most significant factor in influencing the overall vortex structure and the suction pressures beneath. It is further revealed that the vertical wind angle of attack, ${\varphi}$, plays a critical role in generating the instantaneous peak suction pressures near the roof corner.

  • The purpose of this study is to make clear that the relationship between the directional properties of late arriving sound and listener envelopment (LEV). Psycho-acoustical experiments are performed with an objective measure of inter-aural cross-correlation(IACC) in order In predict whether LEV is perceived equally in two kinds of sound fields with horizontal or vertical component of late arriving sound. It is found that LEV is affected by not horizontal component of late arriving sound but also vertical one.

  • The susceptibility of five different marine fish to iridovirus IVS-1 infection was analyzed and found a higher the cumulative mortality in the order of rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus), red sea bream (Pagrus major), sea perch (Lateolabrax sp.), rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) and black porgy (Acanthopagrus schlegeli). However, the concentrations of virus in the infected spleens of these species did not differ significantly. To determine the release of iridovirus from infected fish into culturing seawater, rock bream were challenged with iridovirus IVS-1 and the concentration of virus in the water was analyzed using PCR. Over the 10 days of the analysis, the linear relationship between the number of dead fish and viral DNA concentration found in culturing seawater should be considered direct evidence of horizontal iridovirus transmission.

  • A monoleaflet polymer artificial heart valve showed the remarkable improvement in pressure drop compared with other types of artificial valve. So, in this study we designed a monoleaflet polymer artificial valve with two supporting members to minimize the deformation and bending stress of the valve with respect to the variation of the gap between two supporting members using nonlinear contact analysis. The marginal valve thickness was also predicted in accordance with the relationship between the thickness and horizontal displacement in order to prevent the dislocation of the valve tip from the frame wall.

  • The diel swarming of Moina macrocopa and the relationship between environmental factors were evaluated in a shallow reservoir. The littoral density of Moina macrocopa maintained low from night to noon, reached maximum density at the afternoon with compact swarms at the waters' edge, and dispersed after sunset. The recruitment of Moina macrocopa and changes of water temperature (r=0.709, p<0.001) and juvenile fish density (r=0.511, p=0.002) in the littoral zone showed a significant positive relationships. After the induction of diel horizontal migration toward littoral zone, therefore, direct juvenile fish predation pressure should be induced Moina macrocopa swarming.
