  • This study was carried out to investigate the biological performance of the brownplanthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal, reared on rice plants at different growth stages; maximum tillering, booting, heading with and without panicles, and milking. The results obtained are as follows: The rice plants at the maximum tillering stage gave the best in the longevity, oviposition period, and the total number of oviposited eggs for the macropterous females, and the worst with the booting stage. For the brachypterous females, however, the best results were obtained from the rice of which their panicles had removed after heading. There was no significant difference in the hachability of eggs and the developmental period of the nymphs in the next generation, but the nymphal mortality was the highest with the milking stage and the lowest with the maximum tillering and heading stage without panicles. The longest life span was shown in males derived on the maximum tillering stage, and the shortest for milking(macropterous type) or booting (brachypterous type) stages. Coefficientes of variances in longevity and number of eggs for the adults emerged from heading stage without panicles were lower than those with panicles intact, and such trend was more obvious in brachypterous adults, especially for the females. The biological performances of the BPH have close relationship with the translocated organic material at the feeding site which showed considerable difference with the growth stages of the rice.

  • New screening method of varietal resistance by isotope $^{32}P$ was examined in these experiments. Insects were fed for 24 hrs. in the vials, with rice seedlings absorbed the solution if $0.6\~7{\mu}\;Ci\;^{32}P$ for 24 to 48 hrs. Feeding amounts of 3 species of plant-hoppers at the different stages and duration of infestation were investigated for effective process of screening method of the varietal resistance using isotope $^{32}P$. Feeding amount of $^{32}P$ of brown plant-hopper was observed for the different varieties. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. Brown planthopper fed greatest and the feeding amount were increased in order of white-backed planthopper and small brown planthopper. Female hoppers fed more than male. 2. Feeding amount was increased in order of adult, 5th instar, adult, 4th instar, 3rd instar 2nd instar and 1st instar. The duration of $24\~48\;hours$ is considered sufficient for insect infestation. 3. New screening method by $^{32}P$ was compared with seedling bulk screening method in view of feeding amount and plant reaction. Feeding amount of $^{32}P$ by brown planthopper in Milyang 47, resistant variety to this insect, was very low, while in TN 1, susceptible variety, it was very high about one hundred tines of Milyang 47.

  • Cuticular penetration and detoxication as mechanisms of resistance to the carbamate insecticides in fenobucarb-selected($R_{f}$) and carbofuran-selected($R_{c}$) strains of the brown planthopper (N. lugens Stal) were investigated. Rates of penetration were not significantly different in the susceptible and resistant strains. However, total amount of excretion of the $R_{f}$ and $R_{c}$ strains were much larger than that of the susceptible strain. Fenovucarb and carbofuran were in vivo metabolizd much faster in the $R_{f}$ strain than in the susceptible strain. OSBP(o-sec-butyl phenol) and 3-ketocarbofuran phenol were invitro the major metabolites of fenobucarb and carbofuran in the brown planthopper, respectively. Total amount of the two major metabolites were produced abotu 2 times larger in the $R_{f}$ and $R_{c}$ strains compared to the susceptible strain. OSBP and 3-ketocarbofuran phenol were not so toxic to the brown planthopper ($LD_{50}$ >100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g hopper). Based on our data, detoxication plays a large role in resistance to fenobucarb and carbofuran in the resistant strain of BPH, although several resistance factors maybe involved.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the winter ecology of the green leafhopper(GLH), Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, in Milyang, south-eastern part of Korea from early December to early April during 1990 to 1992. The instar distribution in the overwinteing GLH population collected in December 5th was most of 4th instar 77% to 79% followed by 3rd instar 15% to 17% and 5th instar 3%. These instar distribution rate in the overwintering GLH was changed with collecting dates during overwintering periods of the GLH. Among the GLH population collected, as a result, the distribution rate of the 5th instar was significantly increased in February 20th and was most of 5th instar 70% to 71% in March 19th and was adult 47% to 50% in April 8th. During two overwintering periods of the GLH, the averaged instars converted the instar distribution of the overwintering GLH into the numerical values were 3.91 and 3.86 instar in December 5th, 4.11 and 4.07 instar in February 20th, 4.75 and 4.79 instar in March 19th and 5.42 and 5.45 instar in April 8th respectively. In addition to, the developmental index between pre-collected date and post-collected date of the overwintering GLH was roughly more than 1.0 value. It means that the overwintering GLH was developed without cease though the development was very slow and deponded upon air temperature. The overwintering GLH population were significantly more collected at the levee than at the barley field.

  • This study was carried out to analyst the damage due to the brown planthopper, Nilapalvata lugens Stal, at different stages(maximum tillering, booting, heading, and milking) of rice. The results are as follows: The population density of the migrating and the first generations of the brown planthoppers seemed not to be large enough to cause significant effects on the plant height and the number of tillers, while the second and the third generations caused significant reduction in 1000 grain weight(Yl) and the filled grain percentage$(Y_2)$. They were very closely related to the population density(X) of tile second generation of the BPH; $$Y1(g)=25.602-0.0213X(r=-0.5205^{**})$$ $$Y2(\%)=76.97-0.1370X(r=-0.4820^{**})$$ The relationship between rice yield (Yg) and the accumulated total density (X) of BPH per hill by the time of harvest; $$Y(g)=24.694-0.0576X(r=-0.6959^{**})$$ Since the source of the outbreak BPH is the first generation, it nay conclude that the detailed information on the population status of the first generation; density, age components, ratio of the brachypterous form, are very important in relation to management of the pest.

  • Objectives: To monitor the radon concentration level in plants that handle phosphorus rock and produce gypsum board and cement, and evaluate the effective dose considering the effect of radon exposure on the human body. Methods: Airborne radon concentrations were measured using alpha-track radon detectors (${\alpha}$-track, Rn-tech Co., Korea) and continuous monitors (Radon Sentinel 1030, Sun Nuclear Co., USA). Radon concentrations in the air were converted to radon doses using the following equation to evaluate the human effects due to radon. H (mSv/yr) = Radon gas concentration x Equilibrium factor x Occupancy factor x Dose conversion factor. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) used $8nSv/(Bq{\cdot}hr/m^3)$ as the dose conversion factor in 2010, but raised it by a factor of four to $33nSv/(Bq{\cdot}hr/m^3)$ in 2017. Results: Radon concentrations and effective doses in fertilizer manufacturing process averaged $14.3(2.7)Bq/m^3$ ($2.0-551.3Bq/m^3$), 0.11-0.54 m㏜/yr depending on the advisory authority and recommendation year, respectively. Radon concentrations in the gypsum-board manufacturing process averaged $14.9Bq/m^3$ at material storage, $11.4Bq/m^3$ at burnability, $8.1Bq/m^3$ at mixing, $10.0Bq/m^3$ at forming, $8.9Bq/m^3$ at drying, $14.7Bq/m^3$ at cutting, and $10.5Bq/m^3$ at shipment. It was low because it did not use phosphate gypsum. Radon concentrations and effective doses in the cement manufacturing process were $23.2Bq/m^3$ in the stowage area, $20.2Bq/m^3$ in the hopper, $16.8Bq/m^3$ in the feeder and $11.9Bq/m^3$ in the cement mill, marking 0.12-0.63 m㏜/yr, respectively. Conclusions: Workers handling phosphorous gypsum directly or indirectly can be assessed as exposed to an annual average radon dose of 0.16 to 2.04 mSv or 0.010 to 0.102 WLM (Working Level Month).

  • The purpose of this study is small scale coagulation module is developed and demonstrated through a lab-scale test. Recent as a sewage treatment rate increases, have heightened the interest in the necessity on the nonpoint source and developing a small processing unit has been increased. Coagulation sedimentation module in this study is additional growth of floc through swirling in the outside zone, reduction of microstructure floc number and the internal settling zone through vertical/level flow complex sedimentation method after the coagulation process precipitation method as an effective high separation efficiency can be divided was also assessed. Coagulation sedimentation module can increase the load factor was 4.4 times compared to conventional clarifier base on the same volume and surface area through vertical/level flow. In this study, this process was selected formation and maintenance of swirling and uniform flow distribution in the internal settling zone as an important design factor, to derive its FLUENT was used to characteristics of the flow model. Through the simulation of swirling, influent velocity, dimensions of external basin, hopper depth of bottom cone was determined and through analysis of velocity distribution, flow distribution detailed specifications are derived like as diameter and number of effluent hole. Lab-scale($120{\ell}/hr$) test results, influent of 300~800 NTU to less than 10 NTU without polymer feeding was able to operate in the 20minutes retention time(surface loading rate $37.3m^3/m^2$-day), and through analysis FLUENT the possibility of using design parameters were derived.

  • 1. Rice plant grown with silica had more elect leaves and heading was one week earlier with silica than without silica grown in both water culture and Akiochi soil. 2. Silica content of rice plant was apparently increased by silica application and the increase insilica was more increased by bassal application of silica than top dressing. The content of other eements in plant decreased with silica application and the trend was most noticeable in iron. 3. Rice plant low in silica were more susceptible to reaf blast, Helminthosporium, mites and smaller brown plant hopper. 4. There was no significant effect of silica on increasing the dry matter production of rice plant grown on water culture, but silica remarkerbly increased the dry matter production of rice plant grown on Akiochi soil. The increasing effect of silica on rice grown on Akiochi fields was more noticeable than that of grown on Pots. 5. In rice plant grown on Akiochi soil, number of spikelets and percentage of ripened grains were increased by application of silica. The silica effects can be increased by application of well balanced nitrogen and potassium ratio. 6. From these results, it can be concluded that silica seems to have no direct effect on rice growth, but application of silica to Akiochi soil associated with low silica supply may be critical for healthy growth of rice plant, and silica directly related to rice agronomy.

  • This paper presents a fast back-type transfer device for snack food processing that uses the inertia of transferred material. A conventional conveying system is a drive system that uses a belt conveyor and mechanical crank, which generate noise and vibration and cause environmental pollution. Vibration and noise are reduced in the proposed fast back feeding device by using a counterweight. The crank drive unit was replaced with a linear servomotor, and an equilibrium device was designed to balance the force due to acceleration. This makes it is possible to adjust the forward and backward speed and acceleration through PLC control. A vibration damper device offsets the vibration force of the periodic shock form. The main cause of the vibration was identified through vibration analysis, and reduction measures were established. We verified the effectiveness of the vibration by making a prototype and performing about 10 vibration tests. Because no mechanical transducer is needed, energy loss, noise, and vibration do not occur, and the operating speed is not limited.
