  • In practice, not only the load current but also the load voltage may contain asymmetric and harmonic components. Instantaneous power using p-q theory is analyzed to have compensation of reactive power, harmonics and asymmetry at the same time. In this paper, the limitation of p-q theory by using only shunt or series active filter is analyzed. A new scheme is proposed to solve the above issues.

  • Oriental medicine is one of the main branches of traditional medicine left in the world. It includes acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, herbology, and qigong, all of which are still commonly used and officially recognized in some Asian countries, including Taiwan. In this article, the current educational, health insurance, and research and development status of traditional medicine in Taiwan will be introduced. The specific focus of the article is on efforts to integrate these ancient medical practices into modern medical science in our country.

  • The therapeutic effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for patients with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is supported by evidence from numerous studies. This article provides an overview of cognitive models and major techniques (i.e., cognitive restructuring and exposure) of CBT for SAD, developed by the study group of SAD in the Korean Academy of Anxiety Disorder. Korean-culture specific factors and new trends such as a third wave of CBT are also described.

  • We present numerically simulated results on stabilities of optical soliton transmission in highly-dispersion-perturbed optical fiber systems. We have found that the perturbation of dispersion along the transmission line does not significantly degrade stability of soliton transmission as long as the average soliton concept is obeyed.

  • Using the polarization dependence of laser output powers, we measured the characteristics of the birefringence, such as the magnitude of phase retardation, the ellipticity, and the off axis angle to the fiber optical axis, inside the ring type fiber laser cavity.

  • The finite nature of human existence leads many to search for meaning, which comes into sharper relief for those who are imminently facing death. Therefore, universal existential concerns such as the inevitability of death, existential isolation, loss of meaning, freedom, and dignity are inherent psychological issues in palliative care. Consequently, one of the critical challenges facing palliative care is how to address these issues effectively. This paper provides an overview of common themes of existential concerns and psychotherapeutic interventions to address existential distress among patients in palliative care.
