The purpose of this study is to exmine the effects of reminiscence therapy on deprssion of the elderly residing at home. The subjects were sampled from the members of senior citizens' centres located in Kwangju City. Total number was 73, 38 for the control group and 35 for the experimental group. The study was carried out after a non-equivalent pretest-posttest design. Data were collected from 23 Jun. to 11 Nov. 1993. Reminiscence therapy was applied only to the experimental group. once a week for 6 weeks. Depression level was measured by the questionnaire before and after treatment given. The results were as follows: 1. Religion and family-attachment among socioeconomic charactiristics were significantly different with the level of depression. 2. Religion and pocket - money provider among socioeconomic charactiristics were significantly different with the level of life-satisfaction. 3. The relationship between depression and life -satisfaction was a significant negative correlation(r=-0.777, P=0.000). 4. The depression level of the experimental group was significantly decreased after the treatment as contrasted with that of control group(P=0.004). On the basis of this study it can be concluded that reminiscence therapy reduces depression level.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of music therapy on depression, balance, and flexibility in the elderly. An experimental group consisting of 23 people, was given music therapy for 90 minutes per a week for 6 weeks, while a control group consisting of 21 people, was not given music therapy with quasi-experimental design. Result: The result of the study show that music therapy is effective for decreasing depression and improving flexibility in the elderly. However, this study found no significant differences in balance between the experimental and the control groups. Conclusion: Despite one part, nursing intervention of music therapy to adapt Rhythm for Life elevated the strength of the elderly's body and showed decrease in depression. Therefore the Music therapy Program improves the quality of life in the elderly.
This study was done to identify basic information in classifying nursing diagnoses and nursing interventions needed for the further development of computerized nursing care plans. Data were collected by reviewing charts of 123 home care clients who had active disease, for whom at least one nursing diagnosis was on the chart, and who had been discharged. Data included demographics, medical orders, nursing diagnoses and nursing interventions. The results of the study, which found the most frequent medical diagnoses to be cancer (40.7%) and brain injury (26.8%), showed that 'Impaired Skin Integrity'(18.3%), 'Risk for Infection'(15.0%), 'Altered Nutrition, Less than Body Requirements'(13.8%), and 'Risk for Impaired Skin Integ rity'(9.9%) were the most frequent nursing diagnoses. 'Pressure Ulcer Care'(28.4%) was the most frequent intervention for 'Impaired Skin Integrity', 'Infection Protection'(16.0%) for 'Risk of Infection', 'Nutrition Counseling'(26.8%) for 'Altered Nutrition' and 'Positioning'(22.0%) for 'Risk for Skin Integrity Impairment', Comparison of interventions with the Nursing Intervention Classification(NIC) showed that the most frequent interventions were in the domain 'Basic Physiological' (33.94%), followed by 'Behavioral'(27.8%), and 'Complex Physiological' (22.6%). Interventions related to teaching family to give care at home could not be classified in the NIC scheme. Examination of the frequency of NIC interventions showed that for the domain 'Activity & Exercise Management', 75% of the interventions were used, but for seven domains, none were used. For the domain 'Immobility Management', 93% of the times that an intervention was used, it was 'Positioning', for the domain 'Tissue Perfusion Management', 'IV Therapy' (59.1%) and for the domain 'Elimination Management', 'Tube Care: Urinary'(54.0%). The nursing diagnoses 'Altered Urinary Elimination' and 'Im paired Physical Mobility' were both used with these clients, but neither 'Fluid Volume Deficit' nor 'Risk of Fluid Volume Deficit' were used rather 'IV Therapy' was an intervention for 'Altered Nutrition, Less than Body Requirements', A comparison of clients with cancer and those with brain injury showed that interventions for the nursing diagnosis 'Impaired Skin Integrity' were more frequent for the clients with cancer, interventions for 'Risk of Infection' were similar for the two groups but for clients with cancer there were more interventions for' Altered Nutrition'. Examination of the nursing diagnoses leading to the intervention 'Positioning' showed that for both groups, it was either 'Impaired Skin Integrity' or 'Risk for Skin Integrity Impairment'. This study identified a need for further refinement in the classification of nursing interventions to include those unique to home care and that for the purposes of computerization identification of the nursing activities to be included in each intervention needs to be done.
This study was conducted to assess need for education on the infection control by examining the knowledge on infection control in home care of the home care trainees who had completed an infection control course. Using 64 items questionnaire. home care trainees of eight home care education institutions who took classes related with infection control. The level of knowledge evaluated subjectively was 4.24point (full mark: 5 point). The correct answer rates for handwashing and gloving. cleaning patients' rooms. preventing sharp injury, preventing exposure to potential infectious agents, home care bag technique were 84.5% 86.4% 70.7% 65.3% 76.2% representatively. For the knowledge on the infection control principles to prevent catheter related infection, indwelling catheter related infection, tracheal tube related pneumonia. L-tube related infection, oxygen therapy related infection. and wound infection were 62.8% 27.8% 39.1% 87.8% 76.5% 80.5% representatively. The correct answer rates varied depending upon the educational institutes (p< = .0001), educational levels (p= .001), workplaces (p<.0001), and the experience of infection control education (p= .001). Considering these results. a standardized curriculum must be developed and implemented after analyzing the existing infection control curricula of the home care education institutes. and guide books for infection control in home care should be developed and distributed. In addition. continuous infection control education be provided to the home care nurses through reeducation so they can acquire new knowledge needed for carrying out infection control activities effectively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the necessity of home visit rehabilitation therapy by rehabilitation professionals working at social welfare facilities. Methods: The subjects of this study were 227 rehabilitation professionals (social worker, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech-language therapist, special education teacher, and staff of institutions for the disabled who were working at community rehabilitation centers. The data were collected over 65 days (2008. 09. 10~11. 14). The results were analysed statistically by the Chi-square test. Results: The results are as follows: Long-term care service was established in Korea by the Ministry of Health in July, 2008. But there are limits to their being able to provide various rehabilitation services for chronic patients and old people. According to a recent survey, almost all rehabilitation professionals (N=227) stated that home visit rehabilitation therapy is necessary. Conclusion: In Korea, the long-term care service has a nursing service and a service supporting physical activities of daily living, but not physical therapy. So, home visit rehabilitation services should include physical therapy, rehabilitation exercise, and pain management.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify health problems and support received from the health and welfare service using MDS-HC(Minimun Data Set for Home Care) in the aged living at home. Method: Eighty-one elderly persons were selected from those listed in community-welfare service centers in Seoul and Kyunggi Province between December 2002 and January 2003. Result: Eleven health problems per elderly person on average were identified, and the frequent care needs were in order: preventive health measure, health promotion, visual function, depression & anxiety, communication disorders, social function, pain, environmental assessment, oral health, cognition and falls. The number of health problems by the level of ADL was ‘ADL 1(Independence)’ 9.87, ‘ADL 2(Partial independence)’ 12.78, ‘ADL 3(Dependence)’ 13.73. Utilization of formal health & welfare services among the elderly was ‘meals on wheels’ 40.7%, ‘home helper’ 38.2%, ‘visiting of social welfare worker’ 21.0%, ‘physical therapy’ 19.6%, ‘day care center’ 12.3%, ‘volunteer's service’ 9.9%, ‘home visiting care’ 3.7%, ‘occupational therapy’ 3.7%, and ‘speech therapy’ 2.5%. Conclusion: The results suggest that using the MDS-HC 2.0 is applicable to help decide criteria for both health and welfare service supplied to the elderly.
Purpose: This study was done to develop and test a home-based discharge program. Methods: The study design was a pretest-posttest nonequivalent nonsynchronized quasi-experimental design. Participants were mothers of premature infants on oxygen therapy at home. The participants, 49 mothers, were assigned to either the experimental group (24) or control group (25). Data collection was conducted from September, 2008 through February, 2009. Maternal confidence and anxiety were measured using a questionnaire. Chi-square test, t-test and Repeated Measures ANOVA were used to analysis the data. Results: Two hypotheses, "Maternal confidence in the experimental group will be higher than that of the control group" and "Perceived anxiety level in the experimental group will be lower than that of the control group", were set up and both hypotheses were supported as there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: It suggests that the discharge program developed in this study is an efficient intervention method to boost maternal confidence of the mothers with premature infants and to decrease their anxiety; therefore, this program is expected to be of use in nursing interventions.
