  • As the implementation of the high school credit system and the 2022 revised curriculum approaches, it is crucial to explore specific directions for the future of home economics elective courses. Therefore, this study aims to draw implications for the direction of home economics elective courses by identifying factors that influence high school students' choices, with a focus on insights from home economics teachers. Furthermore, we aim to investigate strategies that can be used to encourage students to choose home economics elective courses. To accomplish the objectives of this study, we analyzed previous research on course selection factors and conducted focus group interviews (FGI) with seven home economics teachers. As a result, we identified a total of 20 factors that influence students' selection of the home economics elective courses, including "personal preference for the subject", "personal excellence in the subject", "recommendations from friends or seniors", "recommendations from parents", and "recommendations from homeroom teachers". A total of 22 strategies to promote the selection for home economics elective courses were identified through the FGI and presented across different levels: (1) support from home economics teachers and students, (2) the home economics and academic society, and (3) within the school. The findings of this study can serve as foundational research for analyzing the preference of high school students when selecting home economics elective courses. It can also provide a basis for exploring ways to revitalize the selection of newly introduced home economics elective courses in the 2022 revised curriculum, suggesting insights for the development of future home economics curriculum and elective courses.

To this end, the Q method was used, which is useful for operant subjectivity studies in which research participants create their own opinions and viewpoints. Based on the general procedures of the Q method, this study finalized 40 statements comprised of the representational system of high school students on male home economics teachers, which are Q samples, from the Q population. The statements were Q-sorted by P samples comprised of 31 high school seniors and analyzed using the QUANL program. The results showed that there were 4 different viewpoints of high school students on male home economics teachers. The type 1 focused on individual traits, claiming that the 'male' gender of home economics teachers and the 'home economics' subject are merely individual traits of the teachers. The type 2 focused on the subject, perceiving male home economics teachers with focus on the subject of home economics. The type 3 focused on competencies, thinking that male home economics teachers have sufficient skills and competencies to teach home economics. • Historically the value of the secondary Home Economics subject matter has been justified with the extrinsic aim to satisfy the needs of the individual and family and of the society. The purpose of this study is to investigate the educational and philosophical significance of the knowledge in Home Economics education through reasoning out its intrinsic aim. From the point of discipline-based curriculum, Home Economics as 'the structure of knowledge' constitutes the curriculum of the secondary Home Economics subject matter and contributes to understanding the family life intellectually with its unique perspective. When students understand these theoretical contents, they will internalize the core idea of Home Economics so that their cognitive perspective on family life is developed or widened. With this cognitive perspective, they are able to discover the aspect of family life from their daily life, to interpret and judge every situation properly. It is the presupposition of socially expected practical problem solving that makes Home Economics education intrinsically meaningful. In conclusion, the secondary Home Economics curriculum needs to be reinterpreted or reorganized as the structure of knowledge, not as fragmentary informations or facts, through which the broad cognitive perspective on family life is developed and Home Economist's mode of thinking is transmitted.
