When one attempts to construct a hologram. one finds that there are many sources of measurement errors. These errors are even amplified if one predicts the pressures close to the sources. The pressure estimation errors depend on the following parameters: the measurement spacing on the hologram plane. the prediction spacing on the prediction plane. and the distance between the hologram and the prediction plane. This raper analyzes quantitatively the errors when these are distributed irregularly on the hologram plane The sensor mismatch and inaccurate measurement location. position mismatch. are mainly addressed. In these cases. one can assume that the measurement is a sample of many measurement events. The bias and random error are derived theoretically. Then the relationship between the random error amplification ratio and the parameters mentioned above is examined quantitatively in terms of energy.
We propose an efficient method for synthesizing mesh-based realistic computer-generated hologram (CGH). In a previous nonanalytic mesh-based CGH synthesis, the angular spectrum of the two-dimensional (2D) plane is calculated using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) with the same size as the resolution of the final hologram. Because FFT increases the computation time as the size of the input matrix increases, the previous method has a problem: The higher the resolution of the hologram, the greater the computational load, thereby delaying synthesis time. In this study, when calculating the angular spectrum of the 2D plane in mesh-based CGH synthesis, we propose a method to calculate the angular spectrum by defining the 2D plane with an arbitrary size smaller than the resolution of the final hologram. The resolution adjustment method reduces the computation time and can be applied to occlusion culling and texturing for the realistic effect of mesh-based CGH. We describe the principle, error analysis, application of realistic effect, and experimental results of the proposed method.
A fundamental problem in the in-line digital holography microscope is that the real image and virtual image and zero-order image are not separated spatially. In this paper, we have eliminated the zero-order noise by an averaging method and the twin image is divided using a geometrical set-up in an in-line digital holographic microscope. The size of the virtual image depends on the distance between the objective lens and the hologram plane and on the distance between the hologram plane and the image plane. We found that the virtual image size is smallest when the distance between the objective lens and the hologram plane is equal to the back focal length of the objective lens. We could divide the virtual image and real image by controlling the distance between the hologram plane and the objective lens.
Defocused Fourier plane holograms are stored in disk-type holographic memories where thin recording media are used, the areal storage density per hologram and the intensity uniformity of the signal beam at the recording plane are studied. As the pixel pitch of the spatial light modulator that represents binary data increases, the storage density per hologram increases if exact Fourier holograms are stored. When defocused Fourier plane holograms are stored, however, we show that there exists an optimal pixel pitch that maximizes the area storage density per hologram in general, to increase the areal storage density per hologram, f/# of the Fourier transform lens that focuses the data image should be as small as possible. In this case, not only the intensity distribution at the recording plane but also the recording area becomes very sensitive to the degree of defocusing. Therefore, even if the exact Fourier plane holograms are stored, the defocusing effect owing to the medium thickness should be taken into account to achieve the maximal areal storage density per hologram.logram.

We propose a new synthesis method for the hologram of 3D objects using incoherent multiple orthographic view images. The 3D objects are captured and their multiple orthographic view images are generated from the captured image. Each orthographic view image is numerically overridden by the plane wave propagating in the direction of the corresponding view angle and integrated to form a point in the hologram plane. By repeating this process for all orthographic view images, we can generate the Fourier hologram of the 3D objects.

Volume hologram was recorded using reference beam form optical fiber taper. A singel mode fiber was chemically etced to make a taper structure, and we showed experimentally that the referencing by the irregular beam pattern from this taper structure could increase the storage density of photorefractive volume hologram. The spatial selectivity of the volume hologram with this method was increased by two times compared to the normal single mode fiber referencing case. A theoretical analysis with randomly phased plane model also confirmed the results.

Acoustic holography makes it possible to reconstruct the acoustic field based on the measurement of the pressure distribution on the hologram surface. Because of the merit that one can obtain an entire three-dimensional wave field from the data recorded on a two-dimensional surface, the holographic method has been widely studied. Being an experimental method, holography has an unavoidable error which is generate by sampling in space and frequency domain and finite aperture size. Its magnitude is dependent on the space and frequency domain and finite aperture size. Its magnitude is dependent on the shape of hologram surface, acoustic holography may be classified into four types of holography : rectangular type planeholography, circular type plane holography, cylindrical holography and spherical holography. In this paper, four types of holography are studied by modal summation method. Numerical simulation is performed using a monopole source with varying parameters to find out effects to the estimation error in each holography. Experiments of circular type plane holography and cylindrical holography explain strong relation between the shape of hologram surface and the acoustic field.
This paper presents a phase-only modulation scheme for a three-dimensional (3-D) image matching system to improve optical efficiency of the system. The 3-D image matching system is based on the two mask heterodyne scanning. A hologram of the 3-D reference object is first created and then the phase of the hologram is extracted. The phase of the hologram is represented as one mask with the other mask being a plane wave. The superposition of each beam modulated by the two masks generated a scanning beam pattern. This beam pattern scans the 3-D target object to be recognized. The output of the scanning system gives out the correlation of the phase-only hologram of the reference object and the complex hologram of the target object. Since a hologram contains 3-D information of an object as a form of fringe pattern, the correlation of holograms matches whole 3-D aspect of the objects. Computer simulations are performed with additive gaussian noise and without noise for the complex hologram modulation scheme and the phase-only hologram modulation scheme. The computer simulation results show that the phase-only hologram modulation scheme improves the optical efficiency. Thus the system with the phase-only hologram modulation scheme is more robust than the system with the complex hologram modulation scheme.
We propose a method to synthesize a color non-hogel-based computer-generated-hologram (CGH) from light field data of a three-dimensional scene with a hologram pixel pitch shared for all color channels. The non-hogel-based CGH technique generates a continuous wavefront with arbitrary carrier wave from given light field data by interpreting the ray angle in the light field to the spatial frequency of the plane wavefront. The relation between ray angle and spatial frequency is, however, dependent on the wavelength, which leads to different spatial frequency sampling grid in the light field data, resulting in color aberrations in the hologram reconstruction. The proposed method sets a hologram pixel pitch common to all color channels such that the smallest blue diffraction angle covers the field of view of the light field. Then a spatial frequency sampling grid common to all color channels is established by interpolating the light field with the spatial frequency range of the blue wavelength and the sampling interval of the red wavelength. The common hologram pixel pitch and light field spatial frequency sampling grid ensure the synthesis of a color hologram without any color aberrations in the hologram reconstructions, or any loss of information contained in the light field. The proposed method is successfully verified using color light field data of various test or natural 3D scenes.
A digital micro-mirror device (DMD) has the potential to modulate an incident wave with high speed, and the application for holographic display has been studied by many researchers. However, the quality of reconstructed image isn't good in comparison with that from a gray-scale amplitude-only hologram since it is a binary amplitude-only spatial light modulator (SLM). In this paper, we suggest a method generating a set of binary holograms to improve the quality of the reconstructed image. Here, we are concerned with the case for which the object plane is positioned at the Fourier domain of the plane of the SLM. In this case, any point in the Fourier plane is related to all points in the hologram. So there is a chance to generate a set of binary holograms illuminated by incident wave with constant optical power. Moreover, we find an interesting fact that the quality of reconstructed image is improved when the spatial frequency bandwidth of the binary hologram is limited. Therefore, we propose an iterative segmentation algorithm generating a set of binary holograms that are designed to be illuminated by the wave with constant optical power. The feasibility of our method is experimentally confirmed with a DMD.
