  • The seismic design concept of RC bridges is to attain the proper ductility of piers, yielding a ductile failure mechanism. Therefore, seismic design force for moment is determined by introducing a response modification factor (R), and lateral reinforcements to confine core concrete are specified in the current design code. However, these design provisions have irrationality, which results in excessive amounts of lateral reinforcements for columns in Korea, which are generally designed with large sections. To improve on these provisions, a new design method based on seismic performance has been proposed. To apply this to hollow sectional columns, however, further investigations and improvements must be performed, due to the different seismic behaviors and confinement effects. In this study, hollow sectional columns with different lap-splice of longitudinal bars and lateral reinforcements have been tested. Seismic characteristics and performance were investigated quantitatively. These research results can be used to derive a performance-based design for hollow sectional columns.

  • In recent the construction of bridges having hollow sectional piers is gradually increasing since the hollow section is more effective than solid section in resistance against seismic load. It is, therefore, very important to understand the behavior of columns with hollow sections in seismic design. However, many past researches were concentrated only on the flexural deformability of them. In this study the shear characteristics of them have been studied with scale model tests. 7 models having different void and aspect ratios were designed and tested to investigate the effect of them on shear capacities. And then the validity of empirical equations to predict shear capacity was investigated compared with the test results. The test result 80 percent of the valid area of cross section should be adequate. And compared to the proposed four model the experimental shear capacities are in good agreement with the UCB.

  • Ductility-based seismic design is strongly required for the rational and cost-effective design of RC piers, and a reliable evaluation of shear strength is indispensable for its success. Unlike the flexural behavior of RC columns, shear behavior is highly complex, due to its many effects such as size, aspect ratio, axial force, ductility and so on. To address this, many design and empirical equations have been proposed considering these effects. However, these equations show significant differences in their evaluation of the initial shear strength, and the reduction in strength with the increase of ductility. In this study, the characteristics of initial shear strength of hollow sectional columns were investigated using experiments with the parameters of aspect ratios, void ratios, web area ratios and load patterns. The test results were analyzed through a comparison with the values predicted by empirical equations. On the basis of the mechanical characteristics and test results, a new empirical equation was proposed, and its validity was assessed.

  • In order to attain enhanced seismic performance of RC bridges, premature shear failure prior to the achievement of target ductilities of the piers should be prevented. For this purpose, a reliable shear strength evaluation is required. The shear strength of an RC column subjected to a lateral force decreases with an increase in ductility. Many empirical equations for the shear strength have been proposed by many researchers. However, there are many discrepancies in the initial shear strength in the low ductility range, and in the decrease rate according to the ductility. In this study, a new empirical equation of shear strength considering the displacement ductility effect has been proposed, in which the initial shear strength equation proposed by the authors was revised on the basis of the investigation of many other researchers' test results. The resulting improvement in accuracy is confirmed by comparison with other empirical equations.
