The concept design of a riser for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion in 10 MW is proposed and its dynamic behaviour characteristics is analyzed with numerical method. A riser pipe with a hollow along its thickness in the cross-section to increase the effective modulus of its cross-section is designed considering the manufacture. The riser pipe without hollows along its thickness needs a lumped weight at the bottom end of a riser in order to keep its vertical hanging configuration from large buoyancy and the strong current. The riser is designed to control its density by inserting materials in high or low density into a hollow. The dynamic behaviour characteristics of the two designed risers is evaluated with the developed numerical analysis tool. The combined stress of the riser with a lumped weight is showed to be dominated by weight of a lumped mass. The riser with no hollow shows large combined stress near sea surface by strong current. Local structural analysis for the cross-section of a hollow riser is needed in detail.

A novel steel-pipe energy pile is introduced, in which the deformed rebars for main reinforcing are replaced with steel pipes in a large diameter cast-in-place energy pile. Here, the steel pipes act as not only reinforcements but also heat exchangers by circulating the working fluid through the hollow hole in the steel pipes. Under this concept, the steel-pipe energy pile can serve a role of supporting main structures and exchanging heat with surrounding mediums without installing additional heat exchange pipes. In this study, the steel-pipe energy pile was constructed in a test bed considering the material properties of steel pipes and the subsoil investigation. Then, the thermal performance test (TPT) in cooling condition was conducted in the constructed energy pile to investigate thermal performance. In addition, the thermal performance of the steel-pipe energy pile was compared with that of the conventional large diameter cast-in-place energy pile to evaluate its applicability. As a result, the steel-pipe energy pile showed 11% higher thermal performance than the conventional energy pile along with much simpler construction processes.

A pipe is a hollow, long-form part that is primarily used to transport fluids, such as liquids or gases. Pipes are used in a range of applications in different fields from mechanical purposes to architecture and electrical uses. Despite the significance owing to various usability of pipes, few studies have been conducted using the physical property test method. The tensile test is widely used as a method to check the physical properties of the pipe. The existing pipe tension test contains the possibility to cause errors, which are fractures outside the gauge distance and cross-sectional deformation of the pipe. In this study, a novel pipe tension test method using a jig is presented and pipes with various materials are tested. It is expected that the proposed method can reduce errors that occur in conventional pipes and also obtain more accurate values to enable more efficient testing.

The aim of this study is to manufacture an aluminum pipe yoke of automotive steering system for lightweight. In a multistage cold forging process for aluminum pipe yoke, the surface defects frequently occur due to excessive deformation or friction during extrusion process for forming hollow pipe part. It is import to reduce the friction between the material and the forging die. This study investigated a multistage forging process with sliding die to reduce friction for aluminum pipe yoke. After evaluating by FE analysis, the forging experiment with the sliding die was carried out. As a result, it was possible to manufacture a sound aluminum pipe yoke.
Hollow prestressed concrete filled steel tube (HCFT) piles, which compose hollow PHC piles inside thin wall steel tubes, are developed. In order to investigate the strength characteristics of HCFT piles, flexural and shear tests were conducted on HCFT piles as well as PHC and steel pipe piles with the same diameter. Results of the test program showed that the flexural strength of HCFT piles was 2.88 and 1.19 times those of ICP and steel pipe piles with thickness of 12 mm, respectively, and its shear strength was 2.40 times that of steel pipe piles. The shear key attached to the inside of thin wall steel tube did not affect the flexural behavior of HCFT piles. It was also observed that the flexural strengths of HCFT piles with diameters of 450 and 500 mm were 35 to 63% higher than the sum of the flexural strengths of its components, respectively, because the strength of concrete in compressive zone increased by confining effect of thin wall steel tube on concrete. HCFT piles used as upper piles in hybrid composite piles might decrease the lateral displacement and increase the structural safety of structures subjected to lateral loads.

By using the hollow shaft with $0.5^{\circ}$ internal taper, ball valve and rubber packing, charging the working fluid at engineering vacuum degree (vacuum pressure higher than 1 torr) and carrying out experiments, it was investigated the performance of rotating heat pipe with variant operating conditions. In this experiment, it was shown that it is impossible the internal liquid flow was laminar film flow which agree with the assumption of present theoretical analyses, but the internal vorticity makes the heat transfer increase and for the maximum heat transfer there is optimal mass loading for the given heat pipe geometry and operational conditions.
The appropriate injection of H2O2 is essential to produce hydroxyl radicals (OH·) by mixing H2O2 quickly and exposing the resulting H2O2 solution to UV irradiation. This study focused on evaluating mixing device of H2O2 as a design factor of UV/H2O2 AOP pilot plant using a surface water. The experimental investigation involved both experimental and model-based analyses to evaluate the mixing effect of different devices available for the H2O2 injection of a tubular hollow pipe, elliptical type of inline mixer, and nozzle-type injection mixer. Computational fluid dynamics analysis was employed to model and simulate the mixing devices. The results showed that the elliptical type of inline mixer showed the highest uniformity of 95%, followed by the nozzle mixer with 83%, and the hollow pipe with only 18%, after passing through each mixing device. These results indicated that the elliptical type of inline mixer was the most effective in mixing H2O2 in a bulk. Regarding the pressure drops between the inlet and outlet of pipe, the elliptical-type inline mixer exhibited the highest pressure drop of 15.8 kPa, which was unfavorable for operation. On the other hand, the nozzle mixer and hollow pipe showed similar pressure drops of 0.4 kPa and 0.3 kPa, respectively. Experimental study showed that the elliptical type of inline and nozzle-type injection mixers worked well for low concentration (less than 5mg/L) of H2O2 injection within 10% of the input value, indicating that both mixers were appropriate for required H2O2 concentration and mixing intensity of UV/ H2O2 AOP process. Additionally, the elliptical-type inline mixer proved to be more stable than the nozzle-type injection mixer when dealing with highly concentrated pollutants entering the UV/H2O2 AOP process. It is recommended to use a suitable mixing device to meet the desired range of H2O2 concentration in AOP process.

This research is tendencious to manufacture solid piston-rod of shock absorber as hollow piston-rod using friction welding. The SM45C has been welded to the SM45C-pipe in order to investigate the effect of upset pressure on friction weldability. The friction time and upset pressure was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 55MPa, and upset time of 2.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied of friction weld, and so the results were as follows. When the upset pressure is sufficient, gets the high tensile strength. The optimal welding conditions were n=2,000rpm, $P_1$=55MPa, $P_2$=95MPa, $t_1$=1.5sec, $t_2$=2.0sec when the total upset length is 4.5mm.

In general, the hollow jet valve, the fixed cone valve had been used for the urgency released or maintenance of the flow rate. Nowadays, the butterfly valve, the gate valve are applied in economic performance and operation maintenance more than the hollow jet valve, the fixed cone valve. However, in the case of butterfly valve, it should be required the strict application standard to the cavitation coefficient because the structural axis and disk were situated in pipe channel and the occurring the shock problem by Karman Vortex. Therefore, there were investigated the valve cavitation and accident investigation by field survey to establish the applicable extensibility of the urgency released valve as the preliminary study.
