This paper presents the results of a series of tests carried out on cold-formed steel rectangular hollow and concrete infilled beam to column connections and frames. A stub column was chosen such that overall buckling does not influence the connection behaviour. The beam chosen was a short-span cantilever with a concentrated load applied at the free end. The beam was connected to the columns along the strong and weak axes of columns and these connections were tested to failure. Twelve experiments were conducted on cold-formed steel direct welded tubular beam to column connections and twelve experiments on connections with concrete infilled column subjected to monotonic loading. In all the experiments conducted, the stiffness of the connection, the ductility characteristics and the moment rotation behaviour were studied. The dominant mode of failure in hollow section connections was chord face yielding and not weld failure. Provision of concrete infill increases the stiffness and the ultimate moment carrying capacity substantially, irrespective of the axis of loading of the column. Weld failure and bearing failure due to transverse compression occurred in connections with concrete infilled columns. Six single-bay two storied frames both with and without concrete infill, and columns loaded along the major and minor axes were tested to failure. Concentrated load was applied at the midspan of first floor beam. The change in behaviour of the frame due to provision of infill in the column and in the entire frame was compared with hollow frames. Failure of the weld at the junction of the beam occurred for frames with infilled columns. Design expressions are suggested for the yielding of the column face in hollow sections and bearing failure in infilled columns which closely predicted the experimental failure loads.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), PVDF-HFP, hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the dry/wet spinning technique using different polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations as non-solvent additive in the dope solution. Two different PEG concentrations (3 and 5 wt.%). The morphology and structural characteristics of the hollow fiber membranes were studied by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and void volume fraction. The experimental permeate flux and the salt (NaCl) rejection factor were determined using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. An increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulted in a faster coagulation of the PVDF-HFP copolymer and a transition of the cross-section internal layer structure from a sponge-type structure to a finger-type structure. Pore size, nodule size and roughness parameters of both the internal and external hollow fiber surfaces were determined by AFM. It was observed that both the pore size and roughness of the internal surface of the hollow fibers enhanced with increasing the PEG concentration, whereas no change was observed at the outer surface. The void volume fraction increased with the increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulting in a higher DCMD flux and a smaller salt rejection factor.
Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 cells were immobilized in an asymmetric hollow fiber bioreactor for application to the continuous production of succinic acid. The media was fed into shell-side of the module using a peristaltic pump, and the products were collected through lumen-side outlet. The number of hollow fibers within the module did not affect the bioreactor efficiency in the transverse operated hollow fiber bioreactor. The steady state at the outlet of hollow fiber bioreactor was reached after 24 hr cultivation at flow rate of 0.25 mL/mim, 12 hr at 0.5 L/min, and 9 hr at 1.0 mL/mm, respectively. The succinate and fumarate concentrations within the hollow fiber bioreactor, however, were as changeful as increasing the flow rate. During continuous operation with the flow rates between 0.5 and 2.0 mL, the productivity of succinate was 8.0-10.9 g/L $.$ hr at 30 g/L fumarate, 4.9-14.9 g/L hr at 50 g/L fumarate, and 7.2-17.1 g/L hr at 80 galL fumarate, respectively.
$Ni(OH)_2$ hollow spheres have been prepared by solvent displacement crystallization using a micro-injection device, and the effect of process parameters such as concentration and the relative ratio of the injection speed of the precursor solution, which is an aqueous solution of $NiSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$, to isopropyl alcohol of displacement solvent have been investigated. The crystal phases after NaOH treatment are in the ${\beta}-phase$ for all process parameters. A higher concentration of $NiSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ aqueous solution is injected by a micro-injection device and bigger $Ni(OH)_2$ hollow spheres with a narrower particle size distribution are formed. The crystallinity and hardness of the as-obtained powder are so poor that hydrothermal treatment of the as-obtained $Ni(OH)_2$ at $120^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in distilled water is performed in order to greatly improve the crystallinity. It is thought that a relative ratio of the injection speed of $NiSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ to that of isopropyl alcohol of at least more than 1 is preferable to synthesize Ni(OH)2 hollow spheres. It is confirmed that this solution-based process is very effective in synthesizing ceramic hollow spheres by simple adjustment of the process parameters such as the concentration and the injection speed.
The purpose of this study was to evacuate the effects of the number of tied hollow fibers in a novel membrane oxygenator that satisfied the limiting factor of minimizing the friction loss in the intravascular blood flow Pattern. The membrane oxygenator is a bundle consisted of several hundred ho1low fibers haying the outside diameter of 380 $\mu m$ and the axial jacket length of 600 mm. The eight different variation of tied hollow fibers in a bundle were designed. and the liquid flow pattern was controlled by a pump. The liquid pressure drop was measured by in vitro experiments using water and g1ycero1. Uniform blood flow pattern was observed for each number of tied hollow fibers. Pressure drop was 13-16 mmHg outside of the membrane oxygenator consisting of up to 700 ho1low fibers. More effective contact of liquid with the tied ho1low fibers was observed as a decrease in the number of the tied hollow fibers. and resulted in the enhancement of the friction tractor

In locations where the cost of concrete is relatively high, or in situations where the weight of concrete members is to be kept to a minimum, it may be economical to use hollow R.C. members. The ductility of circular hollow R.C. columns with one layer of longitudinal and spiral reinforcement placed near the outside face of the section and the steel tube placed on the inside face of the section is investigated. Such hollow sections are confined through the wall thickness since the steel tube is placed. In this study, moment-curvature analyses are conducted with Mander's confined concrete stress-strain relationship. The variables influenced on the ultimate strain is the ratio and yield strength of confining reinforcement and the compression strength for confined concrete. From this ultimate strain - the transverse reinforcement ratio relationship, the transverse reinforcement ratio for circular hollow reinforced columns with confinement is proposed. The proposed transverse reinforcement ratio is confirmed by experimental results.
We demonstrate the sol-gel coating technique of colloidal clusters for producing hollow micro-particles with complex morphologies. Cross-linked amidine polystyrene (PS) microspheres were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene. The amidine PS particles were self-organized inside toluene-in-water emulsion droplets to produce large quantities of colloidally stable clusters. These clusters were coated with thin silica shell by sol-gel reaction of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and ammonia, and the organic polystyrene cores were removed by calcination at high temperature to generate nonspherical hollow micro-particles with complex morphologies. This process can be used to prepare hollow particles with shapes such as doublets, tetrahedra, icosahedra, and others.

This paper described a centrifuge study in order to investigate ground-underground hollow structure interaction-induced rocking behavior in liquefied ground. Uplift of the underground hollow structures is initiated due to liquefaction in sandy grounds when the ground is exposed to a strong shaking during earthquakes because the apparent unit weight of these structures is smaller than that of the liquefied soil. In order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of the underground hollow structure and the effects of original subsoil during the uplifting, model tests were performed by changing the relative density of the original subsoil and installing an acrylic box as a trench. The results of the present study show that rocking behavior of the underground hollow structure due to shear deformation of the surrounding subsoil or lateral movement from the original subsoil contributed to large magnitude of the uplift due to strong shaking.
Cellulose triacetate (CTA) polymer among cellulose esters were used for preparing hollow fiber membranes by phase separation method to investigate the gas permeation properties. To endow gas separation properties, 1,4-dioxane and LiCl were used as additives in the polymer dope solution. The spinning conditions including spinning temperature were controlled to form an active skin layer on the hollow fiber surface. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine morphology of surface and cross section of the prepared CTA hollow fibers. The gas permeation performance of CTA hollow fiber membranes showed $P_{CO2}$ = 17 GPU and ${\alpha}_{CO2/N2}$ = 48.
SiC hollow fiber was fabricated by curing, dissolution and sintering of Al-PCS fiber, which was melt spun the polyaluminocarbosilane. Al-PCS fiber was thermally oxidized and dissolved in toluene to remove the unoxidized area, the core of the cured fiber. The wall thickness ($t_{wall}$) of Al-PCS fiber was monotonically increased with an increasing oxidation curing time. The Al-PCS hollow fiber was heat-treated at the temperature between 1200 and $2000^{\circ}C$ to make a SiC hollow fibers having porous structure on the fiber wall. The pore size of the fiber wall was increased with the sintering temperature due to the decomposition of the amorphous $SiC_xO_y$ matrix and the growth of ${\beta}$-SiC in the matrix. At $1400^{\circ}C$, a nano porous wall with a high specific surface area was obtained. However, nano pores grew with the grain growth after the thermal decomposition of the amorphous matrix. This type of SiC hollow fibers are expected to be used as a substrate for a gas separation membrane.
