  • In this study, composite hollow fiber membranes were developed for the recovery of olefin monomers in polyolefin industry off-gases. Polyetherimide (PEI) hollow fiber support membranes were fabricated from spinning solutions containing PEI, NMP and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The influence of dope solution and inner coagulant composition on the permeation properties and structure of hollow fiber supports was examined. PDMS was used as a selective layer and coated on PEI hollow fiber support. The thickness of active layer was controlled by changing coating solution concentration. The permeation properties of hollow fiber supports and composite membranes were characterized with a pure gas permeation test. The optimized composite hollow fiber membrane has $10\;{\mu}m$ selective layer and shows excellent separation performance; the ideal selectivity of olefins over nitrogen is in the following order: 1-butylene (6.4) > propylene (17) > ethylene (97), which selectivity data are similar to the intrinsic olefin/nitrogen selectivities of PDMS. This confirms that the new composite hollow fiber membranes suitable for olefin off-gas recovery has developed successfully.

  • In order to investigate the formation behavior of hollow Cu via for MEMS packaging, we observed the microstructure of the Cu vias and measured the average thickness and the thickness deviation with variations of pulse-reverse pulse current density and electrodeposition time. With electrodeposition for 3 hours at the pulse and reverse pulse current densities of $-5\;mA/cm^2$ and $15\;mA/cm^2$, the average thickness and the thickness deviation of the Cu vias were $5\;{\mu}m$ and $0.63\;{\mu}m$, respectively. With increasing the electrodeposition time to 6 hours, it was possible to form the Cu vias, of which the average thickness and thickness variation of the Cu vias were $10\;{\mu}m$ and $1\;{\mu}m$, respectively. With increasing the pulse and reverse pulse current densities to $-10\;mA/cm^2$ and $30\;mA/cm^2$, Cu vias of uniform thickness could not be formed due to the faster increase of the thickness deviation than that of the average thickness with increasing the electrodeposition time.

  • Purpose: To reduce the noise and vibration of reinforced concrete slab structures, the damping performance is to be performed experimentally after installing hollow core or filling it with liquid. Method: Using the hollow rate as an experimental variable, the damping ratio and stiffness of each test specimen at impact load are obtained to determine the difference between the damping ratio and stiffness of the numerical analysis. In addition, the damping effects are reviewed by comparing the difference in the damping ratio and stiffness of a test specimen filled with liquid 50% of the study. Results: Since the difference in resistance between a specimen with or without hollow core is 5%, it is judged that there is no structural problem, and the injection of liquid into the hollow core can increase the damping ratio, which can reduce noise or vibration. Conclusion: At less than 20% of hollow rate, there was little damping effect, and at 30%, damping effect was found. However, if liquid is injected into the hollow core of the specimen, damping rate is shown to increase, and the injection of liquid into the hollow part is believed to reduce noise or vibration.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction and to provide the details and reference data. Five hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced by using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. The adopted numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic performance throughout the loading cycles for several the investigated test specimens. This study documents the testing of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the behaviour of hollow core slabs strengthened with FRP and hybrid techniques through numerical and analytical studies. Different strengthening techniques considered in this study are (i) External Bonding (EB) of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates, (ii) Near Surface Mounting (NSM) of CFRP laminates, (iii) Bonded Overlay (BO) using concrete layer, and (iv) hybrid strengthening which is a combination of bonded overlay and NSM or EB. In the numerical studies, three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) models of hollow core slabs were developed considering material and geometrical nonlinearities, and a phased nonlinear analysis was carried out. The analytical calculations were carried out using Response-2000 program which is based on Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT). Both the numerical and analytical models predicted the behaviour in agreement with experimental results. Parametric studies indicated that increase in the bonded overlay thickness increases the peak load capacity without reducing the displacement ductility. The increase in FRP strengthening ratio increased the capacity but reduced the displacement ductility. The hybrid strengthening technique was found to increase the capacity of the hollow core slabs by more than 100% without compromise in ductility when compared to their individual strengthening schemes.

  • To date, nanostructured tungsten oxides with a variety of stoichiometries, such as WO3, WO2.9, W18O49, and WO2, have been prepared, because they are promising candidates for applications such as gas sensors, photocatalysts, electrochromic devices, and field emission devices. Among them, W18O49 and WO2 have been widely studied due to their outstanding chemical sensing, catalytic, and electron emissive properties. Here we report, for the first time, a one-pot solution-phase route to synthesizing a novel composite hierarchical hollow structure without adding catalysts, surfactants, or templates. The products, consisting of a WO2 hollow core sphere surrounded by a W18O49 nanorod shell (yielding a sea urchin-like structure), were generated as discrete structures via Ostwald ripening. To our knowledge, this type of composite hierarchical core/shell structure has not been reported previously. The morphological evolution and the detailed growth mechanism were carefully studied. We also demonstrate that the size of the hollow urchins is readily tunable by controlling the reactant concentrations.Interestingly, although bulk tungsten oxides are weakly paramagnetic or diamagnetic, the as-prepared products show unusual ferromagnetic behavior atroom temperature. The urchin structures also show a very high Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area, suggesting that they may potentially be applied to chemical sensor or effective catalyst technologies.

  • Two fabrication approaches are proposed to planarize the sacrificial layer over hollow structures. One is the photoresist filling method that makes use of photolithography, thermal curing and plasma ashing. The other is the lamination method that is applying pressure and temperature to the organic film over the hollow structures. The fabrication results are compared with those of CMP process. Trenches and cavities with various dimensions have been made for the porposed process. Upon measuring the planarization levels, they are dependent on planarization methods and the geometrical size of hollow structures. The photoresist filling method is so strongly dependent on the width and depth of trenches that we have problems to use it for large dimensional trenches. To the contrary, the flatness of sacrificial layer over the trenches was found to be almost independent of trench dimensions for the lamination method. A CMP process shows the most excellent results, but the fabrication is complicated and the access to it is not so easy. It is important to choose the proper planarization method by considering the required flatness levels, materials to be planarized, and connection between the planarization step and the previous or the following process of it.

  • The aim of this study is to assess the seismic performance of hollow reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridge columns, and to provide data for developing improved seismic design criteria. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), is used to analyze reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures. Tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and models of reinforcing and prestressing steel were used to account for the material nonlinearity of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete. The smeared crack approach was incorporated. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of hollow reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridge columns is verified by comparing it with the reliable experimental results. Additionally, the studies and discussions presented in this investigation provide an insight into the key behavioral aspects of hollow reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridge columns.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the elution characteristics of the partial dispositioned hollow nylon filament and the mechanical properties of the eluted fabrics according to the weight reduction conditions. For this purpose, the partial dispositioned nylon/PET composite filament, SDY 70d/48f was prepared, and warp beam was also prepared on the sizing machine using these yarns. Four kinds of woven fabrics were designed with different warp and weft densities and these fabrics specimens were eluted with weight reduction conditions of two kinds of NaOH concentration (30, 40g/l), three kinds of weight reduction temperature (50, 60, $85^{\circ}C$) and two kinds of weight reduction time (30, 60min). The eluting rates of these fabrics specimens were analysed with various weight reduction conditions. The eluting characteristics of these fabrics were discussed with the cross-section of nylon hollow filament measures by SEM. Finally, the mechanical properties of the partial dispositioned hollow nylon fabrics were measured and discussed with various weight reduction conditions.

  • The Buckling of the member under compressive stress is likely to occur, which is an important factor determining the strength of structures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the member buckling strength of a circular hollow steel with ball joints and to compare with design specifications for load resistance factor of our country. Furthermore, we would like to suggest basic data for evaluation of buckling length of a circular hollow steel with ball joints according to comparative analysis. These results were summarized as follows: Buckling stress according to the test results on buckling was 1.21 times greater than LSD specifications of our country estimated the entire length of circular hollow steel with ball joints as buckling length. In addition, it was 1.16 times greater than when estimating the length except the ball as buckling length and 1.14 times grater than when excluding the ball and sleeve. Therefore, when estimating buckling stress of circular hollow steel with ball joints, their buckling length may be measured by the length except ball and sleeve.
