  • During the last years hollow core insulators started their success story in the field of high voltage engineering for electrical apparatus, substituting porcelain insulators. The termination, also named top and bottom fittings are used for the connection to the rest of the electrical apparatus. The top and bottom flange are attached to the composite to transmit mechanical load and also ensure the gas tightness. They are bonded by epoxy glue with a glass transition temperature of about $130^{\circ}C$-$150^{\circ}C$ the glass reinforced epoxy tube of filament winding. This paper describes the results of a study on the bonded joints of fiber reinforced epoxy tube and cast aluminum. This suggests that surface roughness and glue types play an important role in evaluating of gas sealing capability on the flange and fiber reinforced epoxy tube in the composite hollow bushing.

  • In the paper, a direct method of solution of the Navier equation is presented. An orthotropic thick hollow cylinder under a one-dimensional steady-state temperature distribution and a uniform magnetic field with general types of thermal and mechanical boundary conditions is considered. The Navier equation in terms of displacement is derived and solved analytically by the direct method, and magnetothermoelastic responses and perturbation of the magnetic field vector in the orthotropic thick hollow cylinder is described. The present method is suitable for orthotropic thick hollow cylinders placed in an axial magnetic field with arbitrary thermal and mechanical boundary conditions. Finally, numerical examples are carried out and discussed.

  • The analytical expressions for a partially coherent flat-topped vortex hollow beam propagating in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis are derived, and the intensity and coherent vortex properties of partially coherent flat-topped vortex hollow beam propagation in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis are analyzed by numerical examples. The influence of beam order parameter N, topological charge M, the coherence length and the ratio of refractive indices $n_e/n_o$ of uniaxial crystals on the normalized intensity distribution and coherent vortex of a partially coherent flat-topped vortex hollow beam propagating in uniaxial crystals are discussed in detail.

  • This research aims to estimate the shear strength of the composition of prestressed hollow-core slab and steel beam. The shear strength of prestressed hollow-core slab combined with the steel beam decreases, as the beam deflection increases to a considerable extent. Existing studies on the shear strength of prestressed hollow-core slab are mostly limited to 265mrn- and larger thickness slab on concrete beam. This study investigates the slab of 100mm-thickness combined with steel beam instead of concrete beam. Five shear connector methods are proposed and the shear strength is estimated with or without the beam deflection for each composition method, respectively. Finally the reduction coefficient $(\beta)$ for the transverse shear stress$(\tau_{zx})$, which is critical for the failure of prestressed hollow-core slab, is proposed.

  • An apparatus was constructed to nitrify small metallic sintered components by using a hollow-cathode discharge plasma method. A stainless steel basket, which contains a sintered part to be nitrified, is potentially grounded and serves as hollow-cathode electrode. Hollow-cathode plasma was produced by supplying the positive voltage to the anode. In this study sintered carbon iron and stainless steel were used as testing specimens. It was shown that an effective nitrifying took place by controlling the total pressure of nitrogen and hydrogen gas and applied voltage.

  • An analytical method is presented to solve the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere subjected to thermal shock and electric excitation. Exact expressions for the transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and electric potentials in the piezoelectric hollow sphere are obtained by means of Hankel transform, Laplace transform, and inverse transforms. Using Hermite non-linear interpolation method solves Volterra integral equation of the second kind involved in the exact expression, which is caused by interaction between thermo-elastic field and thermo-electric field. Thus, an analytical solution for the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere is obtained. Finally, some numerical results are carried out, and may be used as a reference to solve other transient coupled problems of thermo-electro-elasticity.

  • The steel-concrete composite decks have high fatigue durability and deformability in comparison with ordinary RC slabs. Withal, the steel-concrete composite deck is mostly heavier than the RC slabs. We have proposed herein a new type of steel-concrete composite deck which is lighter than the typical steel-concrete composite decks. This can be achieved by arranging hollow sectional members as shear connectors, namely, half-pipe or channel shear connectors. The present study aims to experimentally investigate mechanical characteristics of the half-pipe shear connectors under the direct shear force. The shear bond capacity and deformability of the half-pipe shear connectors are strongly affected by the thickness-to-diameter ratio. Additionally, the shear strengths of the hollow shear connectors (i.e. the half-pipe and the channel shear connectors) are compared. Furthermore, shear capacities of the hollow shear connectors equivalent to headed stud connectors are also discussed.

  • $TiO_2$ hollow microsphere was simply synthesized using various ionic liquids. Shapes and sizes of hollow microspheres were significantly different with the composition of ionic liquids. This is mainly attributed to the interaction between the organic solvent and the ionic liquid at the interface leading to the formation of micropsphere. Among the ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate was the most effective to synthesize the hollow microsphere.

  • The present study aims to understand the behaviour of low-strength masonry prisms constructed with locally-produced low-strength hollow concrete blocks. Compression tests were conducted on masonry prisms constructed with three different mortar grades of cement-sand ratios of 1:3, 1:4.5 and 1:6 representing strong, moderately strong and weak mortar. Stress-strain curves were generated from the test results for the masonry prisms. The hollow concrete masonry units employed in this study are some of the weakest as compared to other masonry units employed by other researchers. The compressive strengths for masonry prisms with mortar grades 1:3, 1:4.5 and 1:6 are 2.21 MPa, 2.19 MPa and 2.25 MPa respectively. The results indicate that the masonry compressive strength of such low-strength hollow concrete block masonry prisms is not influenced by the mortar strength. Simple relationships to estimate the modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of masonry prisms is also proposed.

  • Prestressed prefabricated hollow core concrete slabs with spans of 5 m and 10 m are commonly used since last century and still in service due to the advantage of construction convenience and durability. However, the end slabs are regularly subjected to cracks at the top and fail with brittleness due to the asymmetric boundary conditions. To better maintain such widely used type of hollow core slabs, the effect of asymmetric constraint in the end slabs are systematically studied through detailed nonlinear finite element analyses and experimental data. Experimental tests of slabs with four prestressed tendons and seven prestressed tendons with different boundary conditions were conducted. Results observe three failure modes of the slabs: the bending failure mode, shear and torsion failure mode, and transverse failure mode. Detailed nonlinear finite element models are developed to well match the failure modes and to reveal potential damage scenarios with asymmetric boundary conditions. Recommendations regarding ultimate capacity of the slabs with asymmetric boundary conditions are made to ensure a safe and rational design of prestressed concrete hollow slabs for short span bridges.
