Study on Enhancement for Interfacial Energy Release Rate of Adhesive Layer in Fiber Metal Laminates using Taguchi Method (다구찌 기법을 적용한 섬유금속적층판 접착층의 에너지 해방률 강화에 대한 연구)

  • The fiber metal laminates have been widely used at aerospace industry due to outstanding fatigue characteristic, corrosion resistance and impact resistance and so forth. The objective of this research is to establish the proper manufacturing variables for enhancing the interfacial energy release rate of fiber metal laminates using Taguchi method. The major variables of the manufacturing process are surface treatment, pre-specified temperature holding time and additional pressure. In order to determine the interfacial adhesive strength, the double cantilever beam and end-notched flexure tests were conducted. Afterward, Mode I and II energy release rates at various conditions were introduced signal-to-noise ratio with respect to each condition. Finally, the most efficient manufacturing variables are recognized using larger-the-better characteristic.

  • Vessels on anchoring are frequently dragged due to the increased area of wind pressure by enlargement of ship's size and sudden gust of winds in recent years. In the view point of the ship's navigators, the proper measurements corresponding to the dragging of anchor should be taken into account concerned about the time for the occurring of dragging by the external forces such as wind and wave, the pattern and speed of dragging and the possibility of collisions with any other vessels or obstacles. In this paper, it was examined the actual dragging anchor in T.S. HANBADA due to the wind and waves. From this case, it was found the critical external forces by which she was begun to dragged comparing the force by the wind, frictional resistance, drifting force and ship motion moment with the holding power. Also, through the analysis of the dragging pattern, it was known the alteration range of heading angle, swinging width and dragging speed etc.

Microstructure and Electric Contact Properties of Spark Plasma Sintered Ta-Cu Composite (방전플라즈마 소결법으로 제조된 Ta-Cu의 미세조직 및 전기접점 특성)

  • Microstructure, electric, and thermal properties of the Ta-Cu composite is evaluated for the application in electric contact materials. This material has the potential to be used in a medium for a high current range of current conditions, replacing Ag-MO, W, and WC containing materials. The optimized SPS process conditions are a temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ for a 5 min holding time under a 30 MPa mechanical pressure. Comparative research is carried out for the calculated and actual values of the thermal and electric properties. The range of actual thermal and electric properties of the Ta-Cu composite are 50~300 W/mk and 10~90 %IACS, respectively, according to the compositional change of the 90 to 10 wt% Ta-Cu system. The results related to the electric contact properties, suggest that less than 50 wt% of Ta compositions are possible in applications of electric contact materials.

Effect of Resistance Spot Welding Parameters on AA1100 Aluminum Alloy and SGACD Zinc coated Lap Joint Properties

  • This article is aimed to study the effects of resistance spot welding (RSW) on the lap joint properties between AA1100 aluminum alloy and SGACD zinc coated steel and its properties. The summarized experimental results are as follows. The summarized experimental results are as follows. The optimum welding parameters that produced maximum tensile shear strength of 2200 N was a welding current of 95 kA, a holding time of 10 cycles, and a welding pressure of 0.10 MPa. Increasing of welding current, increased the tensile shear strength of the joint and also increased the amount of aluminum dispersion at the joint interface. The lap joint of steel over the aluminum (Type I) showed the higher joint tensile shear strength than a lap joint of aluminum over the steel (Type II). The indentation depth and the ratio of the indentation depth to the plate thickness decreased when the welding current was increased in the type I lap joint and also decreased when the welding current was decreased in the type II lap joint. The interface structure showed the formation of the brittle $FeAl_3$ intermetallic compound that deteriorated the joint strength.

Preparation of β-FeSi2 Thermoelectric Materials by MA/SPS Process -Formation ofβ-FeSi2Phase- (MA/SPS 공정에 의한 β-FeSi2 열전재료의 제조(I) -β-FeSi2상의 형성-)

  • Fabrication of ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ was attempted by making use of the combined process of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). MA was performed under the Ar gas atmosphere using mixed powders of pure iron and silicon having the mole fraction of 1:2. SPS process was performed at 800-85$0^{\circ}C$ with the applied pressure of 50MPa and the holding time was ranging from 0 to 30min. The mechanically alloyed powder by cyclic operation of rotor for 15hrs consisted of $\varepsilon$-FeSi and Si phases. When this mechanically alloyed powder was sintered by SPS process above 85$0^{\circ}C$, $\varepsilon$-FeSi and ${\alpha}-Fe_2Si_5$ phase were formed. Bulk product sintered at 82$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min consisted of ${beta}-FeSi_2$ phase with a small fraction of $\varepsilon$-FeSi and the density of sintered specimen was 75.3% theoretical density. It was considered that the MA/SPS combined process was effective for the preparation of ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ without heat treatment process after sintering.

Influence of α-SiC Seed Addition on Spark Plasma Sintering of β-SiC with Al-B-C: Microstructural Development (Al-B-C 조제 β-SiC의 스파크 플라즈마 소결에 미치는 α-SiC seed 첨가 영향: 미세 구조 변화)

  • The unique features of spark plasma sintering process are the possibilities of a very fast heating rate and a short holding time to obtain fully dense materials. $\beta$-SiC powder with 0, 2, 6, 10 wt% of $\alpha$-SiC particles (seeds) and 4 wt% of Al-B-C (sintering aids) were spark plasma sintered at $1700-1850^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The heating rate, applied pressure and sintering atmosphere were kept at $100^{\circ}C/min$, 40 MPa and a flowing Ar gas (500 CC/min). Microstructural development of SiC as function of seed content and temperature during spark plasma sintering was investigated quantitatively and statistically using image analysis. Quantitative image analyses on the sintered SiC ceramics were conducted on the grain size, aspect ratio and grain size distribution of SiC. The microstructure of SiC sintered up to $1700^{\circ}C$ consisted of equiaxed grains. In contrast, the growth of large elongated SiC grains in small matrix grains was shown in sintered bodies at $1750^{\circ}C$ and the plate-like grains interlocking microstructure had been developed by increasing sintering temperature. The introduction of $\alpha$-SiC seeds into $\beta$-SiC accelerated the grain growth of elongated grains during sintering, resulting in the plate-like grains interlocking microstructure. In the $\alpha$-SiC seeds added in $\beta$-SiC, the rate of grain growth decreased with $\alpha$-SiC seed content, however, bulk density and aspect ratio of grains in sintered body increased.

The Quality Characteristics of Ready-to-Eat Empal Gentong Affected by Meat Pre-Cooking

  • The purpose of this research was to examine the effectiveness of pre-cooking treatments on the quality characteristics of ready-to-eat (RTE) empal gentong. Raw beef meat was pre-cooked in water bath at 90℃ for 0 min (C), 10 min (T1), 20 min (T2), and 30 min (T3) prior to retorting process at 121℃ and pressure at 70,000 Pa. Results showed that pre-cooking treatments in all treated samples could reduce fat contents in empal gentong's meat by 0.02% (T1), 0.28% (T2), and 1.13% (T3) respectively. Highest precooking time tends to increase the pH and CIE a* values. However, CIE b* values, water holding capacity, and sensory analysis were not affected by pre-cooking duration which must have been affected by sterilization process after pre-cooking. In conclusion, pre-cooking treatment before sterilization in producing empal gentong is a probable technique to reduce its fat content and improve its physical quality. A specific treatment at 90℃ for 10 min is recommended to achieve optimum quality of RTE empal gentong's meat.

Development of ultrafine grained silicon carbide by spark plasma sintering (스파크 플라즈마 소결에 의한 초미세 결정립 탄화규소의 개발)

  • Rapid densification of a SiC powder with additive 0.5 wt% $B_4$C was conducted by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The unique features of the process are the possibilities of using very fast heating rate and short holding time to obtain fully dense materials. The heating rate and applied pressure were kept to be $100^{\circ}C$/min and 40 MPa, while sintering temperature and soaking time varied to 1800, 1850, 1900 and $1950^{\circ}C$ and 10, 20 and 30 min, respectively. All of the SPS-sintered specimens at $1950^{\circ}C$ reached near-theoretical density. The XRD found that 3C-to-6H transformation at $1850^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the rapidly densified SiC ceramics consisted of duplex microstructure with ultrafine equiaxed grains under 2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and elongated grains of 0.5∼2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ wide, length 3∼10 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The biaxial strength increased with the increase of sintering time. Strength of 392.7 MPa was obtained with the fully densified specimen sintered at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, in agreement with the general tendency that strength increases with decreases pore. On the other hand, the fracture toughness shows the value of 2.17∼2.34 MPa$.$$m^{1/2}$ which might be due to the transgranular fracture mode.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the $MoSi_2$ based composites by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes, besides, Hardness characteristics and microstructures of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions such as preparation temperature, applied pressure and pressure holding time. $MoSi_2$ -based composites has been developed in new materials for jet engine of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbine for high- temperature generator. Achieving this objective may require new hard materials with high strength and high temperature-resistance. However, With the exception of grinding, traditional machining methods are not applicable to these new materials. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process that utilizes a spark discharge to melt a conductive material, the tool electrode being almost non-unloaded, because there is no direct contact between the tool electrode and the workpiece. By combining a nonconducting ceramics with more conducting ceramic it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and $MoSi_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic $MoSi_2$. However, interfacial reaction products like (Nb, Mo)$SiO_2$ and $Nb_2Si_3$ formed at the interface of $Nb/MoSi_2$ and increased with fabricating temperature. $MoSi_2$ composites which a hole drilling was not possible by the conventional machining process, enhanced the capacity of ED-drilling by adding $NbSi_2$ relative to that of SiC or $ZrO_2$ reinforcements.

Influence of low-pressure tumbling on the quality characteristics of thawed pork (감압 텀블링 해동이 돈육의 품질 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • As livestock consumption in Korea has been gradually increasing, the quality of the final products has been improved to meet this increased demand. In particular, maintaining the water holding capacity (WHC) and minimizing the drip loss during the thawing of frozen meat are of utmost importance. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of frozen pork subjected to thawing under different conditions: at room temperature (20℃, under air), at a low temperature (4℃ refrigerator, under air), under water (20℃, under water in a vacuum bag), under microwave (microwave-thawing, 260 W), and under low-pressure tumbling (20℃, 0.015 bar, tumbling). The shortest thawing time for frozen pork was recorded upon low-pressure tumbling thus indicating a fast heat transfer. The lowest drip loss (0.2%) and highest WHC (94.5%) were also recorded under this condition. A significantly higher drip loss was observed upon microwave- (1.0%) and water-thawing (1.2%), which resulted in the lowest WHC in microwave thawing (87.2%). The highest total count of aerobic bacteria and coliform group were observed upon room temp thawing while the low pressure tumbling and thawing resulted in the lowest aerobic bacteria (1.90 log CFU/g) and coliform (0.78 log CFU/g) count. Consequently, thawing by low pressure tumbling afforded the best food quality.
