  • The purpose of this paper is to explore a new methodology for the historiography of Korean cos-tumes. In particular, I focus on the possibility for systematic, historical methods appropriate for the history of Korean costumes. First, I characterize the general historiography of costumes as involving two aspects-one as the social science and the other as historical science(Geschichteswissenschaft). My contention is that any historical study of costume should be established on the intersection of social and historical studies, and their entangling relations with many a neighboring field of sciences. It requires in other words, an interdisciplinary approach that combines various methodologies of social sciences as well as those of history. Second, I present an overall review of the historical methodology with a special emphasis on the“Quellenkunde”of orthodox historiography. Building on the review, third, I pay attention to recent innovations in historical methodologies, such as“New History”that draws on history, sociology and social history, and their applicability to the history of Korean costmes. In this regards. I adress among others, the following theoretical perspectives : 1) comparioson and comparative history, 2) the formatived and paternal approaches toward the history of costume, 3) particulartiy and universality of Korean costume. I conclued that the history of Korean costumes should broaden its theoretical horizon in order to accomodate a wider range of research agenda, including costumes of neighboring cultures, while remaining sensitive to new theories and methods of the neighboring social historical sciences. For this purpose, it is emphasized that an international collaboration among researchers of the region, as well as that across the different disciplinnary boundaries, is indispensable for successful studies that can embrace diverse fields and areas.

  • This paper compares presentation methods which are characteristic among museums of natural history in Korea. The different medium for exhibitions are divided into Specimen, Model or Panel Type Displays, Video Presentations, Sound, and Tactile Exhibits, and further classified as Fixed (A Type), Observable (B Type), or Performance Art (C Type) Displays. The museums we studied were the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History, Ewha Womans University Museum of Natural History, Seoul National Science Museum, Gyeryongsan Natural History Museum, the National Science Museum, Mokpo Natural History Museum, and the JejuDo Folklore and Natural History Museum. A study of these museums' approaches to display composition, and exhibition methods according to their exhibit types and contents, revealed the following results: The museums of natural history rely more on Fixed type displays to show information, with appropriate uses of the Observable and the Performance Art type exhibitions. Better utilization of appropriate medium is desired for display contents of Astronomy Space Earth, Minerals Rocks Geology, Animals, Plants, Insects, Prehistoric Organisms Environment, and Anthropology.

  • Hypertension is associated with cardiovascular disease. The environmental and genetic factors can cause the development of hypertension. In this study, the relationship between hypertension and family history of hypertension in Koreans was analyzed in consideration of serum fasting blood glucose levels and age. The study subjects were 2,484 subjects who had a medical examination at a university hospital. The main statistical analysis method was multiple logistic regression analysis. Hypertension prevalence was 16.4% of all subjects, and subjects with a family history of hypertension were 23.5%. The risk of hypertension was 2.36 times higher in subjects with a family history of hypertension than subjects without a family history of hypertension. In addition, in the subjects with fasting blood glucose levels more than 120 mg/dL, the risk of hypertension was 4.44 times higher in subjects with a family history of hypertension compared with subjects without a family history of hypertension. The relationship between family history and hypertension was slightly higher in the older group than in the younger group. To assess the association between hypertension and family history, further cohort study is necessary in the future.

  • HPM (History and Pedagogy of Mathematics) activities deal with integrating the history of mathematics with the teaching and learning of mathematics. As a teacher of mathematics the author will share his personal experience in the engagement of HPM activities during the past forty-five years with fellow teachers who are interested in such activities and who may wish to know how another teacher goes about doing it.

  • In this study, using the temperature history analysis, the influences of the conductive values of wooden form, which are specified by Korean Standard for Concrete and ACI Practice Manual for Concrete, on the temperature history were examined. And, the calculated temperature history is compared with the measured temperature history. In the examination for the influences of the conductive values of wooden form, the value recommended by the Korean Standard can more closely predict the themperature history at the points which the variation of the boundary condition should be considered.

  • There is enthusiasm among many mathematics educators to seek to understand how history of mathematics can be employed to emphasize the usefulness of mathematics and to make it even more useful. We investigate theoretical backgrounds of using history of mathematics for secondary students and prospective mathematics teachers. On the basis of historico-genetic principle and mathematics teachers' professional knowledge, we go into curriculum of prospective mathematics teachers. This study focussed on developing pedagogical approach using history of mathematics for prospective mathematics teachers.

  • We here discuss about the roles and meaning of Joseon mathematics in the history of Asian mathematics from cultural perspective. To do so, we focus on culture. We first look at the meanings and the definitions of the terms, civilization and culture, and their differences. We next discuss on the cultural perspective to look at the mathematical history of Korea, which is considered as a part of the history of Asian mathematics. It is notable that Joseon mathematics of Korea made Asian mathematics develop further, and played the roles of academic bridges among China, Korea and Japan. It also kept and prolonged the life of the Asian mathematics up to the beginning of the 20th century.

  • The purpose of this research is an analysis of research trends concerning history of landscape architecture found in the Journal of Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture (KILA). To do this, I reviewed the 905 articles from the journal from 1973 to 2003, from Which 104 journals were selected. In the articles, there were numerous studies on Oriental history and there was a lack of studies on Western history. Many of the oriental landscape history articles featured the landscape architecture history of the Korean Choseon Dynasty. There was much difference between the 1980s and 1990s. The topics of the 1980s were usually royal palaces, villages and temples, whereas those of 1990s expanded to include confucian memorial halls, walled towns and historical landscape areas. Also the topics of the 1990s included Japanese, Chinese ,md Western landscape architecture. Nevertheless, we had almost no focus on preservation and inheritance of historical cultural landscape sites. To solve this problem, we can find our motivation in the studies in history of landscape architecture.

  • Science has developed along with human society and history. In today's society ruled by pluralism, an educational approach using the historical materials which represent their own cultures will make science education more effective. The purpose of this study was to search for the meaning of science education related with a history of science, and to suggest the possibility for science education based on Korean history of science. The conclusions of this study is below: (1) The history of science is useful to teaching science in K-12 setting. That is because it was helpful to make a scientific concept and to invite student's interest about learning science. Moreover, it was most suitable to teach the nature of science as well as the relation between science and society. (2) A model which consists of 15 types of science education materials using Korean history was suggested. This model plays a potential role as a R&D framework of developing teaching & learning materials based on the history of Korean Science.
