Kazuo Ishiguro's fifth novel When We Were Orphans (2000) tells the story of Christopher Banks, a private detective, who embarks on the ultimate case of his career, the puzzle of his own life. The novel consists of two overall parts, one taking place in London, the other in Shanghai-a division which reveals one of the novel's major themes, the relation between home and abroad. Set in the 1930s, Ishiguro's novel on the one hand contains all the classic ingredients of the so called golden age detective genre-an archetypal English private detective, equipped with fierce deductive skills and a magnifying glass, as well as suspects, criminals, and victims-and yet on the other hand it also deviates in significant ways. In this article, I will attempt to make some links between When We Were Orphans and the genre paradigm of the golden age detective story, arguing that Ishiguro's novel offers an exploration of the genre's ideological connections to a larger historical discourse of imperial nostalgia and decline.

Beltenebros is Antonio Mu?oz Molina's third novel. Its plot originates in a criminal act. Darman, the main character, arrives in Madrid to kill a traitor of the undercover organization to which he himself belongs. Treason is paid with death and Darman is in charge of the executions. The intricate story of espionage and intrigue is absorbing. Unlike other novels of the genre, in Beltenebros we can witness a unique psychological development of the main character. In his fiftieth anniversary, Darman becomes conscious of the painful and devastating effects of his criminal acts on the lives of the people he has crossed paths with. Then, for the first time, he acts like a Romanesque heroe by killing Valdivia-Ugarte, a deceitful mole who has been manipulating the strings of the plot to his own benefit. The story unfolds along an almost uniform progression of chronological time, only interrupted by random memories of a past that twenty years ago destroyed Walter's life, and in which Darman and the rest of the characters are all implicated. Few references to the Spanish Civil War inserted in the discourse are, however, of paramount importance as the depiction of a historical trauma, as a triggering force for the episodes of the novel, or as justification to Darman'scrimes as well as those of the clandestine Comunist Party. Indeed they were the victims of the conflict and the winners inflicted upon them hatred, repression, treason and disloyalty. As in other Mu?oz Molina's novels, the literary space, in this case Madrid, propels the development of the plot, and plays a protagonist role only equal to that of the main characters. It is in Madrid where Darman lives until he becomes prisoner of the enemy army, or where the symmetrical deaths of Walter and Andrade take place. Other spaces inhabit Madrid: the Universal Cinema, symbolic territory of the secret and hidden, where the story, as well as the relationships of the characters start and end the warehouse; or the Bo?te Tab? the nightclub that frequents Valdivia-Ugarte through secret passages connected with the Universal Cinema.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are likely to be more prevalent as their cost-effectiveness improves. The spectrum of applications for WSNs spans multiple domains. In environmental sciences, in particular, they are on the way to become an essential technology for monitoring the natural environment and the dynamic behavior of transient physical phenomena over space. Existing sensor network query processors (SNQPs) have also demonstrated that in-network processing is an effective and efficient means of interaction with WSNs for performing queries over live data. Inspired by these findings, this paper investigates the question as to whether spatio-temporal and historical analysis can be carried over WSNs using distributed query-processing techniques. The emphasis of this work is on the spatial, temporal and historical aspects of sensed data, which are not adequately addressed in existing SNQPs. This paper surveys the novel approaches of storing the data and execution of spatio-temporal and historical queries. We introduce the challenges and opportunities of research in the field of in-network storage and in-network spatio-temporal query processing as well as illustrate the current status of research in this field. We also present new areas where the spatio-temporal and historical query processing can be of significant importance.

The essay attempts at a critical reading of Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) in terms of character and socio-cultural change. Juxtaposing the story of Michael Henchard's career with the social and economic changes in the agricultural town, it attempts to elaborate on the complex ways in which Hardy relates the old modes of life and thinking to the material culture. Though the novel is centered on the story of Henchard, the Henchard-Farfrae clash represents the conflict of "old" and "new" modes of socio-economic organization and consciousness. The story of the rustic man of character struggling with his contradictory traits of strong will-power and emotional collapse suggests that Hardy's literary representation of the rural community and the rustic protagonist is deeply rooted in historical reality. However, while there is the interlocking of the changes in personal fate and social change, the representation is a "reinvented" literary construction with complex mediation. Despite the narrator's emphasis on Henchard's immutability, peculiarity, and resilience, his character is, in a complex, mediated way, shaped by the material conditions of English rural community in the late 19th century. The mediating role of Elizabeth-Jane as a narrative resolution embodies Hardy's ambivalent historical position concerning the period undergoing change and conflict.

This study aims to examine the brief statement about the historiography of architecture by the French philosopher Michel Foucault and the possibility of a historical description according to his method. His historiographic proposition, "the history of architecture back in (the) general history of techne," is a novel idea not only for his contemporaries but also for us. To grasp the meaning of Foucault's proposition, we begin by considering his position with regard to architecture or architectural space in certain discussions till then. We then compare his standpoint on historical recognition with other viewpoints about historical narratives that can be found in books written since 1930. Finally, we interpret the concept of "techne" in the sense of "relation," whose objectivation is for him his concern on architecture and examine possible aspects and their limits.

본 논문은 현기영의 "순이삼촌"을 중심으로 역사적 트라우마에 따른 외상후 스트레스 장애(PTSD)의 치료과정을 탐구한 것이다. 주된 연구방법으로는 주디스 허먼의 이론을 적용하였으며, 논의된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 순이삼촌은 제주4 3사건 당시의 집단 학살 현장에서 기적적으로 살아남았다. 그러나 30년 동안의 유예된 삶을 살면서 그녀는 역사적 트라우마에 시달린다. 이를 치료하기 위해서는 그녀의 외상 증세인 환청, 결벽증 등과 같은 원인을 알아야 한다. 또한 국가 사회적으로 피해자가 치료를 받을 수 있는 도움이 필요하고, 역사 정의가 바로 서야 한다. 둘째, 순이삼촌은 북촌 일대에서 행해지는 제삿날이나 '옴팡밭'에서 일할 때 발견되는 '흰 뼈'와 '납탄환' 등으로 인해 외상을 재경험한다. 이를 치료하기 위해서는 애도가 필요하다. 애도의 과정은 그녀에게 심적 고통을 야기하는 외상 당시의 체험과 증언을 해야 하고, 이를 말할 때 자신의 정서를 솔직하게 고백해야 한다.셋째, 역사적 트라우마를 해소하기 위해서는 자신뿐만 아니라 피해자와 공동체 사이의 연결 복구가 이루어져야 한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 개인은 자기서사에서 집단서사로 치료의 장이 확장됨을 경험하면서 동시에 슬픔을 극복할 수 있는 자신감을 얻는다. 그 결과 외상치료는 회복단계에 도달한다.

장예모 감독의 영화 ≪영≫은 중국전통문화상징을 다양하게 인용하여 시각적 효과를 높이는 반면, 스토리구성에 있어서는 대량의 현대문화상징의 내용을 인용하였다. 그러므로 그의 작품은 전통시각적인 느낌과 현대스토리내용을 모두 구비하였다. 의상과 장신구에서는 전통을 추구하였고 역사를 숭상하는데 충실하였으며 스토리구성에 있어서는 객관성 및 엄숙성을 담보하는 역사소설과 차별을 두었다고 할 수 있다. 가공문학해소로 역사를 새로 쓰고 더 나아가 역사에 대해 풀이함으로써 의도적으로 역사와 일정한 거리감 혹은 잘못된 관계를 유지하고 있다. 장예모 감독의≪영≫영화는 이러한 가공문학의 언사실천을 구사하였다. 영화는 역사를 시적으로 표현하는 한편 한 사람의 마음을 서사하였다. 예전의 영화제작과정에서 원작스토리에 충실하고자 했던 것에 반해 장예모의 ≪영≫은 (2018)제작 당시 원작 ≪삼국·정주≫의 작가 주수진의 동의하에 소설에 큰 변화를 주었다. 그 중에서도 제일 눈에 띄는 부분은 영화에서 원작의 설정을 과감하게 버리고 스토리의 시대배경을 허구적으로 구상해 냄으로써 가공문학을 완성시킨 것이다. 이는 결코 역사 문학의 언사실천은 아니다. 동시에 시각효과에 있어서 중국전통문화인 수묵 등 문화원소를 대량으로 인용하여 새로운 시각효과와 문화체험을 안겨주었다.

This article explores the ways Charles Dickens's roles as novelist and journal editor overlapped and influenced one another in the serial publication of A Tale of Two Cities (1859) and complicates recent historicist readings, which situate the novel in relation to the Indian Mutiny (1857-59), by calling attention to a double imperial logic used to construct British subjectivity not only against forms of Eastern Otherness but, moreover, against forms of Southern Otherness associated with the European South, especially Italy. Analyzing Dickens's historical representation of the French Revolution in relation to its contemporary international political context, this essay examines how the novel's serial publication draws upon political discourse from contemporary articles on the Second Italian War of Independence (1859-61) appearing concurrently in Dickens's journal, All the Year Round. Orientalism circulates simultaneously in the novel as a distant and exotic as well as a provincial and parochial representation of racial and cultural Otherness.

본 연구에서는 Novel Engineering 교수학습단계를 기반으로 창의적 체험활동 시간에 이루어지는 SW 융합형 호국보훈 수업 방안에 대해 기술하고자 한다. 글짓기, 그림 그리기 등 천편일률적으로 이루어지는 호국보훈 수업에 새로운 교육 방법인 Novel Engineering을 적용한 SW 융합형 수업을 개발함으로써 학생들의 컴퓨팅 사고력을 바탕으로 하는 문제해결력 신장은 물론 나라 사랑 정신을 함양할 수 있다. 순국열사의 이야기를 담은 도서를 읽고, 책 속에 제시된 역사적 장면을 추체험활동(Re-enactment)을 통해 시나리오로 작성한 후 이를 Lego WeDo 2.0을 활용해 시뮬레이션 상황을 구현한다. 이러한 SW 융합형 호국보훈 수업을 통해 학생들의 변화도를 창의적 사고력 검사지와 설문지를 통해 분석한 결과 유의미한 변화가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 향후에는 보다 다양한 학년과 교과로 그 범위를 확대하여 Novel Engineering을 적용한 SW 융합형 수업의 효과성을 일반화할 수 있도록 해야겠다.

이 논문의 목적은 새로운 역사극의 등장과 더불어 연극에서는 이러한 현상이 어떻게 나타나는지를 살펴보는데 있다. 통시적으로 역사극의 변화를 살펴보면 새로운 역사적 해석들이 항상 등장했지만 최근 들어 해석의 새로움을 넘어서 역사적 사실을 중요하게 여기지 않는 지점까지 확장되는 경향이 발견된다. 이 논문은 그러한 경향의 연장선에서 <왕세자 실종사건>이란 작품을 통해 최근 역사극의 새로운 흐름을 구체적으로 살펴보려고 하였다. 이러한 새로운 역사극의 흐름은 후기구조주의 역사관, 미시사의 등장과 더불어 더욱 잘 설명될 수 있다. 미시사에서는 작은 개인의 역할이 중요한데 <왕세자 실종사건>에서도 역시 이러한 측면이 발견되며 이 작품에서는 작은 개인이 거대 담론을 전복하기도 한다. 또한 이 작품에는 독특한 시간관이 등장하는데 이는 불연속적 시간의 재구방식을 살펴봄으로써 설명이 가능해진다. 역사극에 멜로나 추리 등의 다른 장르가 섞이는 현상은 영화나 소설에서도 드러나는 바인데 <왕세자 실종사건>에서도 예외는 아니다. 그러나 연극만의 특징은 여전히 유효하며 이미지극이라는 형식의 차용은 새로운 역사극을 참신하게 부각시켜 주는 방법이 되기도 한다.
