Mediastinal Tumors (Report of 29 cases) (종격동종양 29 치험예)

  • This paper is a review of 29 cases of mediastinal tumors originating in the mediastinum or metastasized from other organs and classified on the basis of histopathological types and specific anatomic location in this depart-ment, during nine years period from January 1959 to December 1967. In twenty-three cases, diagnosis was confirmed by histological findings and the rest of the cases were considered to be mediastinal tumors by clinical and/or roentgenological findings. In this series, metastatic mediastinal carcinomas of unknown primary site were most frequent [30.4%] and lymphoma ranked second in frequency comprising 21.7% of total. Range of age was 5 to 61 years and average mean age was 39 years old. Sex ratio was 1.4 male to female. Subjective complaints in order of frequency were as follows: dyspnea [37%], cough [34%], chest pain[24%] and chest discomfort [21%]. Objective signs were as follows: hoarseness [17%], palpable cervical lymph node[17%], blood tinged sputum [10%], weight loss [10%] and superior vena cava syndrome [7%]. There was no operative mortality. There were histologically nine different kinds of mediasfinal tumors in this series.

The Effect of Oral Administration of Ethanol in Ethylene Glycol Intoxication in Dogs (개의 Ethylene Glycol 중독에 대한 에탄올의 경구투여 효과)

  • The present studies were undertaken in attempt to investigate the therapeutic effect of ethanol in dogs intoxicated with ethylene glycol Three dogs treated with ethylene glycol and other three dogs with ethylene glycol plus 20% ethanol orally were examined on clinical signs, endoscopic views, histopathological findings, and autopsy findings respectively. The results obtained were summarized as fellows : 1. The clinical sings and their severity of dogs intoxicated with ethylene glycol were time related and progressed from vomiting, depression, thirsty, tachycardia, tachypnea, convulsiot ataxia, melena, uremia and coma, but clinical signs of dogs treated with ethylene glycol and ethanol simultaneously only stowed vomiting and thirsty. 2. In the gastroscopic view, the dogs intoxicated with ethyelne glycol showed edematous, hyperemia, errosive and ulcerative lesions in the fundus and body area but the dogs treated with ethylene glycol and ethanol simultanously showed edematous and hyperemic lesions. 3. Oral treatment of ethanol with ethylene glycol simultaneously have reduced the signs of EG intoxications in dogs.

Diagnostic imaging findings of subcutaneous mast cell tumor in a dog

  • A 5-year-old Labrador Retriever presented with a subcutaneous mass on the right scapular region with localized calor. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a heterogeneously hypointense mass was seen on T1-weighted images (WI) and hyperintense on T2WI and fat-suppressed T2WI with marginal contrast enhancement on postcontrast T1WI and invasion into the surrounding tissue. Histopathological examination of the mass confirmed subcutaneous mast cell tumor (MCT) infiltrating to the adjacent subcutaneous fat. This is the first report to describe the MRI findings of subcutaneous MCT in veterinary medicine. This study suggests that MRI may help evaluate the extent of invasion of subcutaneous MCT.

  • Angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma) of the uterine cervix is an extremely rare type of benign tumor composed of smooth muscle cells and thick-walled blood vessels. Only a few cases of cervical angioleiomyoma have been reported. Here, we present imaging, including ultrasonography, contrast-enhanced CT, MRI, and histopathological findings of a 38-year-old female with an angioleiomyoma of the uterine cervix.

Comparative study on the Effects of Platelet-Rich Plasma and Enamel Matrix Protein on Supracrestal bone Regeneration of Dental Implant (혈소판 농축혈장과 법랑기질 단백질이 임플란트 골 연상 골 재생에 미치는 영향에 관한 비교연구)

  • The current interest in periodontal tissue regeneration has lead to research in bone graft, root surface treatments, guided-tissue regeneration, administration of growth factors, and the use of enamel matrix protein as possible means of regenerating lost periodontal tissue. Several studies have shown that a strong correlation between platelet-rich plasma and the stimulation of remodeling and remineralization of grafted bone exits, resulting in a possible increase of 15-30% in the density of bone trabeculae. The purpose of this study was to study the histopathological results and differences between the use of platelet-rich plasma and the use of enamel matrix $protein(Emdogain^?)$ about bone regeneration at the implant. Implant fixtures were inserted and graft materials placed into the left femur in the experimental group, while the only implant fixtures placed in the control group. In the first experimental group, platelet-rich plasma and xenograft were placed at the supracrestally placed implant site, and in the second experimental group, $Emdogain^{(R)}$ and xenograft placed at the supracrestally placed fixture site. The degree of bone regeneration adjacent to the implant fixture was observed and compared histopathologically at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after implant fixture insertion. The results of the experiment are as follows: 1. The rate of osseointegration to the fixture threads was found to be greater in the experimental group compared to in the control group. 2. The histopathological findings showed that the bone regeneration, the partial osseointegration existed at 4 weeks, and that osseointegration and bone density increaced in the experimental groups at 8 weeks. 3. The results showed that new bone formation and bone remodeling increased in the area near to the fixture in the first and second experimental groups at 8 weeks than at 4 weeks. The results showed that in the area distant from the fixture, new bone formation did not increase and bone remodeling decreased in the first experimental group at 4, 8 weeks, and that new bone formation increased in the second experimental group. 4. The histopathological findings showed that AZ deposition in the first experimental group was remarkable at 2, 8 weeks, and in the second experimental group at 2, 4, 8 weeks in the area distant from the fixture threads.

Pathogenicity of Five Strains of Toxoplasma gondii from Different Animals to Chickens

  • Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite with a broad range of intermediate hosts. Chickens as important food-producing animals can also serve as intermediate hosts. To date, experimental studies on the pathogenicity of T. gondii in broiler chickens were rarely reported. The objective of the present study was to compare the pathogenicity of 5 different T. gondii strains (RH, CN, JS, CAT2, and CAT3) from various host species origin in 10-day-old chickens. Each group of chickens was infected intraperitoneally with $5{\times}10^8$, $1{\times}10^8$, $1{\times}10^7$, and $1{\times}10^6$ tachyzoites of the 5 strains, respectively. The negative control group was mockly inoculated with PBS alone. After infection, clinical symptoms and rectal temperatures of all the chickens were checked daily. Dead chickens during acute phage of the infection were checked for T. gondii tachyzoites by microscope, while living cases were checked for T. gondii infection at day 53 post-inoculation (PI) by PCR method. Histopathological sections were used to observe the pathological changes in the dead chickens and the living animals at day 53 PI. No significant differences were found in survival periods, histopathological findings, and clinical symptoms among the chickens infected with the RH, CN, CAT2, and CAT3 strains. Histopathological findings and clinical symptoms of the JS (chicken origin) group were similar to the others. However, average survival times of infected chickens of the JS group inoculated with $5{\times}10^8$ and $1{\times}10^8$ tachyzoites were 30.0 and 188.4 hr, respectively, significantly shorter than those of the other 4 mammalian isolates. Chickens exposed to $10^8$ of T. gondii tachyzoites and higher showed acute signs of toxoplasmosis, and the lesions were relatively more severe than those exposed to lower doses. The results indicated that the pathogenicity of JS strain was comparatively stronger to the chicken, and the pathogenicity was dose-dependent.

Progress of Experimental Trichophyton Verrucosum Infection in Guinea Pig (Guinea Pig에 유발시킨 Trichophyton Verrucosum 감염증의 경과)

  • T. verrucosum infection has been reported for the first time in 1986 in Korea and has been increasing progressively. To evaluate the progress of clinical and histopathological change of dermatophytosis caused by T. verrucosum, inoculation study, using T. verrucosum isolated from infected human(human strain) and from infected cattle(cattle strain), was done in 24 male albino Hartley guinea pig. Their clinical and histopathological changes were evaluated. In addition, comparison for the growth rate between human strain and cattle strain on Sabouraud's glucose agar was made. The results were as follows: 1. Growth rate on Sabouraud's glucose agar : Cattle strain showed significantly more rapid growth rate than human strain on Sabouraud's glucose rate at $25^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$. And cattle strain showed more rapid growth rate at $37^{\circ}C$ than $25^{\circ}C$. But human strain showed no significant difference of growth rate at both temperature. 2. Clinical findings: Initial erythema, scale and crust were developed about 8th after inoculation. All three findings reached maximum severity about 12th to 16th day and disappeared about 30th to 34th day after inoculation. There was no significant difference in progress of erythema, scale and crust between cattle strain and human strain. 3. Histopathological findings: Although mild acanthosis was noticed on the 3rd day after inoculation, the other findings including parakeratosis, intraepidermal abscess, spongiosis and vascular change, cellular infiltration were found on 9th day after inoculation. They reached maximum severity on the 12th day and lasted to the 25th day after inoculation. After that, all three findings were decreased gradually between 29th day and 33th day. On the PAS stainings, hyphae and spores were found on the 6th day and disappeared on the 21th day after inoculation. 4. In trichophytin skin test, all of the 24 guinea pigs became positive within average $9.83{\pm}1.17$ lays. These findings suggested that dermatophytosis caused by T. verrucosum induced rapid cell mediated immunity and contributed to rapid resolution of the lesion.

Cervical Paraganglioma Originated from Lingual Vein in a Boston Terrier Dog (보스턴 테리어에서 발생한 혀정맥 유래 목부위 곁신경절종 증례)

  • A 7-year-old castrated male Boston terrier dog was referred due to dyspnea and unilateral cervical mass. On physical examination, mass on left submandibular region was palpated. CT findings revealed this case could be the tumor originated from left lingual vein. The client refused further treatment and the patient expired because of respiratory failure 10 days after presentation. On necropsy, a well-defined firm mass which located in the left side of larynx was detected. Histopathological findings for the mass indicated polygonal tumor cells arranged in nest and separated by fibrovascular septa. We performed immunohistochemisry to evaluate of chromogranin A and tumor cells showed positive immunoreactivity for chromogranin A. Based on computed tomography (CT), histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, this case was definitely diagnosed to paraganglioma of the body on the lingual vein. This report describes the clinical findings, CT imaging characteristics, histopathologic and immunohistochemical features of paraganglioma arised from lingual vein in a dog.

Oral Toxicity Studies for 2 weeks of Gleditschia-saponin in Sprague-Dawley Rats (랫드에서 조각자(주엽) 나무 추출물인 Gleditschia-saponin의 경구 2주 반복투여 독성시험)

  • The repeated toxicity of Gleditschia-saponin produced and provided by S.S. Bio-Tech Bench Co. was evaluated in Sprague-Dawley rats. Gleditschia-saponin was administered to rats by oral route at dose levels of high (180 mg/kg/day), medium (90 mg/kg/day) and low (45 mg/kg/day) once a day for 14 days. Saline was administered to another group of rats as control. Each group was consisted of 5 male and female rats. There were no dose-related changes in clinical findings, food and water consumption, organ weights, urine analysis, biochemical examination and hematological findings in all groups of animals treated with Gleditschia.- saponin, except body weights. Body weighs in male and female rats were increased significantly (p < 0.05) from day 4 to 14 in low, middle and high dose groups than control group. Body weight in high dose group was increased higher than control or low, middle dose groups on day 14. Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity to Gleditschia.-saponin. Therefore, it was concluded that Gleditschia-saponin had no toxic or side effects in Sprague-Dawley rats in an repeated oral toxicity tests.

The effects of Torilis fructus extracts against enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in Piglets (사상자 추출물의 자돈 병원성 대장균 억제 효과)

  • The antibiotic chemotherapy produces sometimes side effects and fails to eliminate bacterial infection. The occurrence of strains resistant to antibiotics would be expected to increase, and it is nowadays important to search for non-antibiotic substances. We are aimed to evaluate the effects of Torilis fructus extracts against enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) in Piglets. The piglets were divided with three groups; Negative control group, E. coli-infected positive control group, and the Torilis fructus extracts treated group with E. coli infection. During the study period, we compared clinical signs, weight increase rate, fecal scores, gross findings between the treated group and non treated group. After necropsy, necropsy findings and histopathological findings were conducted with the comparison between the groups. As the results of this study, the Torilis fructus extracts additive showed the effects on the suppression of E. coli-induced lesions. On the basis of this study results, our data suggest that the Torilis fructus extracts additive have the antimicrobial effects. The Torilis fructus extracts additive could be used as the alternative material for antimicrobial feed additives.
