  • Hand Accelerometers are widely used to detect human motion patterns in real-time. It is essential to reliably identify which type of activity is performed by human subjects. This rests on having accurate template of each activity. Many human activities are represented as a set of multiple time-series data from such sensors, which are mostly non-stationary and non-linear in nature. This requires a method which can effectively extract patterns from non-stationary and non-linear data. To achieve such a goal, we propose the method to apply Hilbert-Huang Transform which is known to be an effective way of extracting non-stationary and non-linear components from time-series data. It is applied on samples of accelerometer data to determine its effectiveness.

  • Rotating machinery has two typical faults with clearance, one is partial rub and the other is looseness. Due to these faults, non-linear and non-stationary signals are occurred. Therefore, time-frequency analysis is necessary for exact fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. In this paper newly developed time-frequency analysis method, HHT(Hilbert-Huang Transform) is applied to fault diagnosis and compared with other method of FFT, SFFT and CWT. The results show that HHT can represent better resolution than any other method. Consequently, the faults of rotating machinery are diagnosed efficiently by using HHT.

  • Intraocular pressure is measured after a cornea air puff by observing biomechanical properties such as thickness or displacement of the cornea. In this paper, we deal with a frequency domain analysis of corneal deformation in the air puff tonometry that is used to diagnose glaucoma or lasik. We distinguish the patient from the normal by measuring the oscillation frequency in the neighborhood of the central cornea section. A binary image was obtained from the video images, and cornea vertical oscillation profile was extracted from the difference between the vertical displacement data and the curve fitting. In terms of Fourier transform, a vibration frequency of 479.2Hz for the patient was obtained as well as more higher 702.8Hz for the normal due to stiffness. Hilbert-Huang transform's empirical mode decomposition generally describes local, nonlinear, and nonstationary data. After the data were decomposed into intrinsic mode functions, a spectrum and power were analysed. Finally, we confirm that the patient has 6 times more higher power ratio for the specific intrinsic mode function between the patient and the normal.

  • JPEG2000 is the upcoming image coding standard that provides better compression rate and image quality compared with JPEG. Lazy-mode steganography guarantees the safe communication under the two information loss stages in JPEG2000. However, it causes the severe changes of the code-block noise variance sequence after embedding and that is detectable under the steganalysis using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) based sequential analysis. In this paper, a JPEG2000 lazy-mode steganography method is presented. The code blocks which produce the sudden variation of the noise variance after embedding are estimated by calculating low precision code-block variance (LPV) and low precision code-block noise variance (LPNV). By avoiding those code-blocks from embedding, our algorithm preserves the sequence and makes stego images secure under the HHT-based steganalytic detection. In addition, it prevents a severe degradation of image quality by using JPEG2000 quality layer information. On various 2048 images, experiments are performed to show the effective reduction of the noise variation after message embedding and the stable performance against HHT-based steganalysis.

  • In the working population, muscle fatigue and musculoskeletal discomfort are common, which, in the case of insufficient recovery may lead to musculoskeletal pain. Workers suffering from musculoskeletal pains need to be rehabilitated for recovery. Isokinetic testing has been used in physical strengthening, rehabilitation and post-operative orthopedic surgery. Frequency analysis of electromyography (EMG) signals using the mean frequency (MNF) has been widely used to characterize muscle fatigue. During isokinetic contractions, EMG signals present strong nonstationarities. Hilbert-Haung transform (HHT) and autoregressive (AR) model have been known more suitable than Fourier or wavelet transform for nonstationary signals. Moreover, several analyses have been performed within each active phase during isokinetic contractions. Thus, the aims of this study were i) to determine which one was better suitable for the analysis of MNF between HHT and AR model during repetitive maximum isokinetic extensions and ii) to investigate whether the analysis could be repeated for sequential fixed epoch lengths. Seven healthy volunteers (five males and two females) performed isokinetic knee extensions at $60^{\circ}/s$ and $240^{\circ}/s$ until 50% of the maximum peak torque was reached. Surface EMG signals were recorded from the rectus femoris of the right thigh. An algorithm detecting the onset and offset of EMG signals was applied to extract each active phase of the muscle. Following the results, slopes from the least-square error linear regression of MNF values showed that muscle fatigue of all subjects occurred. The AR model is better suited than HHT for estimating MNF from nonstationary EMG signals during isokinetic knee extensions. Moreover, the linear regression can be extracted from MNF values calculated by sequential fixed epoch lengths (p> 0.0I).

  • Crack detection method of a rotating blade was suggested in this paper. A rotating blade was modeled with a cantilever beam connected to a hub undergoing rotating motion. The existence and the location of crack were able to be recognized from the vertical response of end tip of a rotating cantilever beam by employing Discrete Hidden Markov Model (DHMM) and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). DHMM is a famous stochastic method in the field of speech recognition. However, in recent researches, it has been proved that DHMM can also be used in machine health monitoring. EMD is the method suggested by Huang et al. that decompose a random signal into several mono component signals. EMD was used in this paper as the process of extraction of feature vectors which is the important process to developing DHMM. It was found that developed DHMMs for crack detection of a rotating blade have shown good crack detection ability.

  • Recently, buildings tend to be large size, complex shape and functional. As the size of buildings is becoming massive, the need for structural health monitoring (SHM) technique is increasing. Various SHM techniques have been studied for buildings which have different dynamic characteristics and influenced by various external loads. "Abnormal behavior point" is a moment when the structure starts vibrating abnormally and this can be detected by comparing between before and after abnormal behavior point. In other words, anomalous behavior is a sign of damage on structures and estimating the abnormal behavior point can be directly related to the safety of structure. Abnormal behavior causes damage on structures and this leads to enormous economic damage as well as damage for humans. This study proposes an estimating technique to find abnormal behavior point using Hilber-Huang Transform which is a time-frequency signal analysis technique and the proposed algorithm has been examined through laboratory tests with a bridge model using a shaking table.

  • Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) method has been recently proposed to analyze non-linear and non-stationary data. This method allows the decomposition of one-dimensional signals into intrinsic mode functions(IMFs) and is used to calculate a meaningful multi-component instantaneous frequency. In this paper, it is assumed that each mode of damped vibration signal could be well separated in the form of IMF by EMD. In this case, we can have a new powerful method to calculate natural frequencies and dampings from damped vibration signal which usually has multiple modes. This proposed method has been verified by both simulation and experiment. The results by EMD method whichhas used only output vibration data are almost identical to the results by FRF method which has used both input and output data, thereby proving usefulness and accuracy of the proposed method.
