This paper proposes a moving window technique that extracts lanes and vehicles using the images captured by a CCD camera equipped inside an automobile in real time. For the purpose, first of all the optimal size of moving window is determined based upon speed of the vehicle, road curvature, and camera parameters. Within the moving windows that are dynamically changing, lanes and vehicles are extracted, and the vehicles within the driving lanes are classified as obstacles. Assuming highway driving, there are two sorts of image-objects within the driving lanes: one is ground mark to show the limit speed or some information for driving, and the other is the vehicle as an obstacle. Using characteristics of three-dimension objects, a neural network can be trained to distinguish the vehicle from ground mark. When it is recognized as an obstacle, the distance from the camera to the front vehicle can be calculated with the aids of database that keeps the models of automobiles on the highway. The correctness of this measurement is verified through the experiments comparing with the radar and laser sensor data.

Precise highway traffic noise simulation and reduction require the accurate data for sound power levels emitted by vehicles, varied to road surface, traffic speed, vehicle types and makers, different from countries to countries. In this study, we have elaboratively measured domestic highway traffic noise and parameters affecting noise levels at the nearside carriageway edge. From numerical simulation using the measured results for highway traffic noise, we propose not only two correction factors to enhance the accuracy of highway traffic sound power estimation using ASJ Model-1998 but also its typical power spectrum according to road surface type. The measured and predicted highway traffic noise levels using the proposed sound power shows little difference within 1 dB.
The dynamic responses of highway bridges are varying depending on the features of either traveling vehicles or bridges. In this study, the probabilistic characteristics of dynamic amplification factors of highway bridges due to traveling heavy vehicles have been examined through analytical simulation processes. The truck with tandem axle and tractor with semitrailer are selected as the representative heavy vehicles, which are modeled with three dimensional 7-DOF and 12-DOF models, respectively. The analytical results have been compared with the experimental results of dynamic loading tests and the validity of the analytical models has been examined. Parametric studies on the means and extreme values of amplification factors have been performed with various traffic conditions such as vehicle types, vehicle weights, surface profiles, number of loading vehicles, loading positions, etc.
PURPOSES : The lane width of the domestic highway is 3.5 ~ 3.6m and it has been designed nationwide. However, the distribution of the average vehicle widths, rearview mirror widths and lateral wheel paths by region appear different. Then, lane spare widths may differ by region followingly. Thus, the flexible design of freeway lane widths is required. METHODS : The methodologies of this paper are as follows. First, vehicle widths rearview mirror widths lateral wheel paths of vehicles driven four national expressways were measured. Second, lane spare widths by vehicle widths were calculated. Third, lane spare widths reflecting rearview mirror widths were calculated by using interval estimation. Additionally, lane spare widths reflecting vehicles lateral wheel paths were calculated. RESULTS : The results of this paper are as follows. First, lane spare widths by vehicle widths ranges 0.83 to 0.95m. Second, lane spare widths reflecting rearview mirror widths ranges 0.518 to 0.747m at the confidence interval 95%. Third, lane spare widths reflecting vehicles' lateral wheel paths ranges -0.022 to 0.322m at the curved sections and the confidence interval 95%. CONCLUSIONS : It may be concluded that the present lane spare widths are relatively narrow at the curved section. Thus, there is a need to consider expanded lane widths at the curved sections. Additionally, there is a need to consider flexible design of lane widths by various conditions.

PURPOSES : The causes of traffic accidents can be classified into the factors of highway users, vehicles, and driving environments. Traffic accidents result from the deficiency in single or combination of these three factors. The objective of this study is to define the "potentially hazardous sections of highway" in terms of traffic safety considering these three factors. METHODS : The test drivers performed repeated driving on these highway sections. The drivers and passengers recorded the sections on which the driving was uncomfortable, and the speeds on the sections excluding the uncomfortable sections were used for the development of the model. RESULTS : The model is composed of three sub-models for each of the horizontal curve, tangent, and the section where the curve starts/ends. The safe driving behavior coefficients by the horizontal curvature were derived by comparing the maximum operating speeds at which the vehicle may slide or deviate and the speeds at which the drivers feel comfort. The safety speeds on tangent were derived by the length of tangent section considering the driver's desired speeds under the traffic condition on which the drivers hardly influenced by the other vehicles. For the sections where the curve starts/ends, the driving behaviors were classified by the distances between the curves, and the safe acceleration/deceleration speeds were derived on which the drivers enter/exit the curve sections safely. CONCLUSIONS : Safety speed could then be regarded that the model suggested in this study may be useful to define the potentially hazardous highway section and contribute the improvement of highway safety.

The design of highway in the future should be convenient using of a high-technology information, and it needs the design of alignment that is able to find the maximum vehicles inducement function fitting into Car Navigation System. Well then, the alignment of the existent highway needs to be analyzed with accuracy for improving design of existent highway, and it needs the design drawing of existent highway, and coordinates of the main point. This study gets data of the alignment of highway economically by Kinematic GPS surveying to analyze the alignment of existent highway, and horizontal alignment of highway is analyzed by this data. The result of study is included within range practical error, and alignment analysis can be known that there is practical.
All highway toll gates in Korea use low-speed WIM(Weight-In-Motion) to block overloaded cargo vehicles from entering the main highway, but some cargo vehicle owners are illegally modifying vehicles to operate variable axles and evading crackdowns by manipulating the axles. In previous studies detect all tires of a running vehicle were detected to determine whether there is axle manipulation. However, because the vehicle entry area at the highway toll gate checkpoint is very narrow, there is a problem that it is realistically difficult to film all tires of the entering vehicle in one video frame. In this paper, we proposed a system that can determine whether the axle is being operated through changes in the height of the vehicle's cargo box rather than by detecting tires. To detect changes in the height of a cargo box, we propose a method to extract the representative line of the cargo box using Hough transform and then measure the change in height of the representative line to detect the change in height of the cargo box. In addition, we propose a method to detect changes in the vertical height of a cargo box by accumulating motion vectors of pixels within a certain area of the image using optical flow. And the two methods were compared and their advantages and disadvantages were analyzed and presented.
Considering characteristics of drivers and vehicles with proper and reliable ways in highway design Procedures can ensure high level of highway safety. However, it is almost impossible to take into account all factors of drivers and vehicles influencing on the highway safety because of their uncertain and random nature. To detour the dead-end, the nature are usually assumed as simple homogeneous and deterministic one. Although the restricted assumption makes the system simple, it can produce serious problems due to lack of considering variability in the system. This paper develops a reliability-based method for determining stopping sight distance(SSD) and intersection sight distance (ISD), which are crucial elements in highway alignment design. In the study, Hasofer-Lind method is adopted. which is a well-known first-order second moment reliability method (AFOSM) The results in this study show that if mean, variance, and distribution of a particular driver-vehicle parameter are known, more reliable sight distances can be applied in highway design procedures because we can reflect uncertainties and randomness. Thus, the Probabilistic method could be adopted in designing the sight distance(s) with the desired reliability level.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this system (Rear Lighting System) is to provide illumination for the driver to operate the commercial vehicle safely after dark in highway, to increase the conspicuity of the vehicle, and especially be suggesting the finest observable improvement method, depending on color and pattern of rear lighting system of truck for midnight highway traffic. METHODS : Rear lightning system as an improving way for forward commercial vehicles lighting the securing sight from human factors and the surrounding environment in midnight driving. For this one, basic materials were collected from the data analysis about many types of problems, and filed investigation for establishing Driving Simulator. also taking statistic test to human volunteers after finding recognizable distance of them. RESULTS : As a result, color with the highest visuality is amber followed by green-red-blue as in order for all road types. Especially almost no difference is found between red and green, also when the light is turn off, recognizable distances is wide difference compared to turn on the light. One more thing about study per pattern, upper and entire lighting have similar recognizable distances, but under lighting shows short distance with difficulty securing sight from medians. And straight section shows similar recognizable distances. By finding visuality improvement method depending on color and pattern of supplement taillight, it is expected to suggest quantitative judgement standard for introducing regulation and improvement of supplement taillight. CONCLUSIONS : Night time vehicle conspicuity to the rear is provided by rear position lamps. this study is showed that the color of light ramp is not important to be safe driving, most important is to turn on the light, recognizable distances is big different compared to turn off the rear light, so when the drivng dark in highway, have to turn on the light for reducing risk.
