  • Seismic performance evaluation was conducted for four wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings in order to check the feasibility of designing steel highrise buildings per elastic seismic design criterion (or strength and stiffness solution) in the regions of strong wind and moderate seismicity. The pushover analysis results revealed that the wind-designed highrise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seismic capacity due to the overstrength resulting from the wind serviceability criterion. The strength demand-to-capacity study showed that, due to the wind-induced overstrength, highrise buildings with a slenderness ratio of larger than four or five can withstand elastically even the maximum considered earthquake at the performance level of immediate occupancy. Based on the analytical results of this study, practical elastic seismic design procedure for steel highrise buildings in the regions of moderate seismicity is proposed.

  • The main objective of this study is to analyze setback patterns of the super-highrise residential buildings in respect to the formal variations of the floor plans. Along with the illumination of the definition of setback, the early part of the paper attempts to establish criteria for the analysis of the setback cases. The research of 38 setback floor plans as well as the typical floor plans of 17 super-highrise buildings carried out through analysis criterions under three categories; physical features, primary causes, and formal types of setback. The result shows a method of evaluating setbacks and setback's potentials in designing the super-highrise buildings for the variation of building form, size, and type.

  • This paper aims to analyze the economic feasibility and investigate the possibility of elastic seismic design of wind-designed highrise concentrically braced frames considering change of mechanical properties of Korean steel under the strong wind and the low seismicity in Korea. To this end, first, highrise concentrically braced frames were designed considering strong wind load. And then, analyses of the economics of them were performed. The seismic performance evaluation of wind-designed highrise buildings was conducted using the response spectrum analysis procedure. Analysis results show that it is possible to save up to approximately 90% of the amount of steel on the 10% increase in steel strength without serviceability. However, with serviceability, the design sectional area of the steel with relatively high strength tends to increment considerably because of the lateral stiffness due to reduction of the inertia moment and so on. This point might apply to limitation of the steel with high tensile yield strength.

  • Even in moderate to low seismic regions like Korean peninsular where wind loading usually governs the structural design of a tall building, the probable structural impact of the design basis earthquake or the maximum credible earthquake on the selected structural system should be considered at least in finalizing the design. In this study, by using response spectrum analysis and linear time history analysis method, seismic performance evaluation was conducted for wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings. Both spectrum-compatible artificial accelerograms and recorded accelerograms were used as input ground motions for the time history analysis. The analysis results showed that wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seismic capacity due to the system overstrength resulting from the wind-serviceability criterion and the width-to-thickness ratio limits on steel members. Time history analysis results generally tended to underestimate the seismic response as compared to those of response spectrum analysis.

In this study, by using response spectrum analysis and time history analysis method, seismic performance evaluation was conducted for wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings. Input ensemble was normalized to be compatible with expected peak ground acceleration. The analysis results showed that wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seismic capacity due to the system overstrength resulting from the wind-serviceability criterion and the width-to-thickness ratio limits on steel members. The time history analysis tended to significantly underestimated the seismic response as compared to response spectrum analysis. Further detailed studies regarding selection and scaling scheme of input ground motions is needed.

  • The designer of a tall building even in moderate and low seismic regions should, in finalizing the desist consider the probable impact of the design basis earthquake on the selected structural system. In this study, seismic response analysis was conducted to evaluate the seismic performance of concentrically braced steel highrise buildings which were designed only for governing wind loading under moderate seismicity. The main purpose of this analysis was to see if the wind design would create a system whose elastic capacity clearly exceeds the probable demand as suggested by the design basis earthquake. The strength demand-to-capacity study revealed that the wind-designed steel highrise buildings with the aspect ratio of larger than five can withstand the design basis earthquake elastically by a sufficient margin due to the system over-strength resulting from the wind-serviceability criterion. The maximum story drift demand from the design basis earthquake was just 0.25% (or half the limit of Immediate Occupancy performance level in FEMA 273)

  • The duration of highrise building projects is more shorter than its increasing of the numbers of floors. The project is liable to overrun of the time in which the project must be complete. AS highrise buildings are increased, time management has been reorganized as critical success factor. To improve time management, time management softwares are introduced and the software's education is made lively in construction company. However a large amount of time management works still have been based on not the software but scheduler's experience. We often can find the time overrun risk of highrise building because of the shortage of scheduler's experience. To diminish the mistake of the scheduler who does not have much experience, we suggested HRB Expert which uses expert's knowledge to make the time plan of highrise building. We made an example of knowledge acquiring and knowledge usage which cased on reinforced concrete work of highrise building by literature review and interview with scheduling expert. The precision of time plan will be enhanced and time overrun will be prevented on condition that HRB Expert is constructed and used

  • This paper is to investigate the possibility of the elastic seismic design for highrise buildings through seismic performance evaluation for potential earthquakes that wind-designed highrise buildings located in strong wind zone and low seismicity can be experienced. Highrise steel diagrid frames which is the most loved structural system in recent years were wind-designed and the substantial system overstrength due to wind design procedure is verified, For the highrise steel diagrid frames, the response spectrum analysis and the seismic performance evaluation by various soil sites were conducted. It was showed that highrise steel diagrid frames with slenderness of greater than 5.2 under strong wind and low seismic zones such as Korea peninsula can resist elastically for the 500 year return period earthquake and have the possibility of seismic design for the 2400 year return period earthquake. In the member level, highrise steel diagrid frames with slenderness of greater than 5.2 all presented the immediate occupancy level regardless of soil sites for the 500 year return earthquake and excluding the $S_E$ soil site for the even 2400 year return period earthquake. In the system level, highrise steel diagrid frames with slenderness of greater than 5.2 showed the immediate occupancy level for $S_A$ and $S_B$ soil sites and the life safety for $S_C$ to $S_E$ soil site in the 500 year return period. The seismic performance level of highrise steel diagrid frames for the 2400 year return period earthquake displayed one step lower than the 500 year return period earthquake.

  • Even in moderate to low seismic regions like Korean peninsular where wind loading usually governs the structural design of a tall builidng, the probable structural impact of the 500-year design basis earthquake (DBE) or the 2400-year maximum credible earthquake (MCE) on the selected structural system should be considered at least in finalizing the design. In this study, seismic performance evaluation was conducted for concentrically braced steel highrise buildings that were only designed for wind by following the assumed domestic design practice. It was found that wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seimsic capacity due to the system overstrength resulting from the wind-serviceability criterion and the width-to-thickness ratio limits on steel members. The strength demand-to-strength capacity study based on the response spectrum analysis revealed that, due to the system overstrength factors mentioned above, wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings having a slenderness ratio of larger than six can withstand elastically even the maximum credible earthquake at the performance level of immediate occupancy.
