The dynamic responses and drift forces in waves of a floating circular fish cage are analyzed considering hydroelastic effects. The method of generalized mode is used to calculate the hydroelastic responses of the floater of cage. The elastic mode shapes, generalized mass, and stiffness in dry mode are evaluated by using a structural analysis code. The higher-order boundary element method is adopted to analyze the interaction between fluid and deformable structure. Some results of vertical motions and drift forces are shown and compared with those for a rigid body.
In this paper a recently developed scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is applied to simulate stress concentration for two-dimensional structures. In addition, a simple and independent formulation for evaluating the coefficients, not only of the singular term but also higher order non-singular terms, of the stress fields near crack-tip is presented. The formulation is formed by comparing the displacement along the radial points ahead of the crack-tip with that of standard Williams' eigenfunction solution for the crack-tip. The validity of the formulation is examined by numerical examples with different geometries for a range of crack sizes. The results show good agreement with available solutions in literatures. Based on the results of the study, it is conformed that the proposed numerical method can be applied to simulate stress concentrations in both cracked and uncracked structure components more easily with relatively coarse and simple model than other computational methods.
A new analytical solution based on a third order shear deformation theory for the problem of static analysis of cross-ply doubly-curved shells is presented. The boundary-discontinuous generalized double Fourier series method is used to solve highly coupled linear partial differential equations with the mixed type simply supported boundary conditions prescribed on the edges. The complementary boundary constraints are introduced through boundary discontinuities generated by the selected boundary conditions for the derivation of the complementary solution. The numerical accuracy of the solution is compared by studying the comparisons of deflections, stresses and moments of symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated shells with finite element results using commercially available software under uniformly distributed load. Results are in good agreement with finite element counterparts. Additional results of the symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated and sandwich shells under single point load at the center and pressure load, are presented to provide data for the unsolved boundary conditions, benchmark comparisons and verifications.

Ocean space utilization using VLFS(Very Large Floating Structures) can provide environmental impact free space by allowing sea water flow freely through the floating structure. Use of Pontoon type VLFS for that purpose needs employment of breakwaters for reduction of wave effects. Therefore, in order to maximize advantage of environmental impact free structure, the breakwater should be the one that can allow water flow freely through it, too. In this paper hydroelastic response of a pontoon type structure is analyzed considering breakwaters which allow water flow through its opening at bottom of the breakwaters. Mode superposition technique is used for solving equation of flexible body while interactions between the pontoon and breakwaters is considered based on generalized mode concept. Bi-quadratic nine node higher-order boundary element method is adopted for more accurate numerical treatment near sharp edged body shape. Performance of various combinations of breakwaters is investigated.

The bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded material (FGM) beams are investigated semi-analytically by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) in this paper. In the concepts of the SBFEM, the dimension of computational domain can be reduced by one, therefore only the axial dimension of the beam is discretized using the higher order spectral element, which reduces the amount of calculation and greatly improves the calculation efficiency. The governing equation of FGM beams is derived in detail by the means of the principle of virtual work. Compared with the higher-order beam theory, fewer parameters and simpler control equations are used. And the governing equation is transformed into a first-order ordinary differential equation by introducing intermediate variables. Analytical solutions of the governing equation can be obtained by pade series expansion in the direction of thickness. Numerical example are compared with the numerical solutions provided by the previous researchers to verify the accuracy and applicability of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed formulations can quickly converge to the reference solutions by increasing the order of higher order spectral elements, and high accuracy can be achieved by using a small number of the elements. In addition, the influence of the structural sizes, material properties and boundary conditions on the mechanical behaviors of FG beams subjected to different load types is discussed.
A simultaneous analytical, experimental and numerical analysis of crack initiation, propagation and breaking process of the Central Straight through Crack Brazilian Disk (CSCBD) specimens under diametrical compression is carried out. Brazilian disc tests are being accomplished to evaluate the fracturing process based on stress intensity factors (SIFs). The effects of crack inclination angle and crack length on the fracturing processes have been investigated. The same experimental specimens have been numerically modeled by a higher order indirect boundary element method (HDDM). These numerical results are compared with the existing experimental results proving the accuracy and validity of the proposed numerical method.

A $C^{0}$ continuous displacement finite element method based on a higher-order shear deformation theory is employed in the prediction of the transient response of laminated composite plates subjected to low-velocity impact. A modified contact law was applied to calculate the contact force during impact. The discrete element chosen is a nine-noded quadrilateral with 5 degree-of-freedom per node. The Wilson-.theta. time integration algorithm is used for solving the time dependent equations of the impactor and the central difference method was adopted to perform time integration of the plate. Numerical results, including the contact force history, deflection, and velocity history, are presented. Comparisons of numerical results using a higher order theory and a first-order theory show that using a higher order theory provides more accurate results. Effects of boundary condition, impact velocity, and mass of the impactors are also discussed.d.
A compact array system of small buoys is used for wave energy extraction. To evaluate the performance of this system, hydrodynamic analysis is carried out in regular waves using the higher order boundary element method. The motion response of each buoy is calculated considering hydrodynamic interactions caused by other buoys. The effect of energy extraction device is modeled as a linear damping load. The efficiencies of energy conversion are compared using the various sizes and arrangements of the array system and the damping coefficients for energy extraction. The increase in size or the packing ratio of the system gives better efficiency. However, the wave condition and the cost for the system should be considered to optimize performance from the perspective of engineering and economics. The proposed nondimensionalized damping coefficient for energy extraction is 0.1~0.5.
In this paper, a two-layer partial interaction composite beams model considering the higher order shear deformation of sub-elements is built. Then, the governing differential equations and boundary conditions for static analysis of linear elastic higher order composite beams are formulated by means of principle of minimum potential energy. Subsequently, analytical solutions for cantilever composite beams subjected to uniform load are presented by Laplace transform technique. As a comparison, FEM for this problem is also developed, and the results of the proposed FE program are in good agreement with the analytical ones which demonstrates the reliability of the presented exact and finite element methods. Finally, parametric studies are performed to investigate the influences of parameters including rigidity of shear connectors, ratio of shear modulus and slenderness ratio, on deflections of cantilever composite beams, internal forces and stresses. It is revealed that the interfacial slip has a major effect on the deflection, the distribution of internal forces and the stresses.
In this paper, the wave-induced motion characteristics of a floating pendulor are investigated numerically. A floating pendulor is a movable-body-type wave energy converter. This device consists of three main parts (floater, pendulum, and damping plates). In order to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces acting on floating bodies, a higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) using a wave Green function is applied to the present problems. The hinged motion of a pendulum is simulated by applying the penalty method. In order to obtain a more realistic motion response for a pendulor, numerical body damping is included. First, the wave force and motion characteristics of just a floater are observed with respect to different shape parameters. Then, a coupled analysis of a floater, pendulum, and damping plates is carried out. The relative pitch velocity and wave forces acting on the floating pendulor are compared with those of a fixed pendulor.
