An active trailing-edge flap blade named as Seoul National University Flap (SNUF) blade is designed for reducing helicopter vibratory loads and the relevant aeroacoustic noise. Unlike the conventional rotor control, which is restricted to 1/rev frequency, an active control device like the present trailing-edge flap is capable of actuating each individual blade at higher harmonic frequencies i.e., higher harmonic control (HHC) of rotor. The proposed blade is a small scale blade and rotates at higher RPM. The flap actuation components are located inside the blade and additional structures are included for reinforcement. Initially, the blade cross-section design is determined. The aerodynamic loads are predicted using a comprehensive rotorcraft analysis code. The structural integrity of the active blade is verified using a stress-strain recovery analysis.
This paper presents an implementation of selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation for a single-phase 13-level transistor-clamped H-bridge (TCHB) based cascaded multilevel inverter. To determine the optimum switching angle of the SHE equations, the Newton-Raphson method is used in solving the transcendental equation describing the fundamental and harmonic components. The proposed SHE scheme used the relationship between the angles and a sinusoidal reference waveform based on voltage-angle equal criteria. The proposed SHE scheme is evaluated through simulation and experimental results. The digital modulator based-SHE scheme using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is described and has been implemented on an Altera DE2 board. The proposed SHE is efficient in eliminating the $3^{rd}$, $5^{th}$, $7^{th}$, $9^{th}$ and $11^{th}$ order harmonics, which validates the analytical results. From the results, it can be seen that the adopted 13-level inverter produces a higher quality with a better harmonic profile and sinusoidal shape of the stepped output waveform.

When ultrasound propagates to a crack, transmitted and reflected waves are generated. These waves have useful information for the detection of the crack lying in a structure. When a crack is under residual stress, crack surfaces will contact each other and a closed crack is formed. For closed cracks, the fundamental component of the reflected and transmitted waves will be weak, and as such it is not easy to detect them. In this case, higher harmonic components will be useful. In this paper, nonlinear characteristic of a closed crack is modeled by a continuum material having a tensile-compressive unsymmetry, and the amplitude of the second harmonic wave was obtained by spectrum analysis. Variation of the second harmonic component depending on the nonlinearity of the inclusion was investigated. Two-dimensional plane strain model is considered, and finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used.

The most widely used primary protection for the internal fault detection of power transformers is current percentage differential relaying(PDR). However, the harmonic components could be decreased by magnetizing inrush when there have been changes to the material of iron core or its design methodology. The higher the capacitance of high voltage status and underground distribution, the more differential current includes the second harmonic component during occurrence of an internal fault. Therefore, the conventional harmonic restraint methods need modification. This paper proposes an advanced protective relaying algorithm by fluxt-differential current slope characteristic and trend of voltage and differential current. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, we have made comparative studies of PDR fuzzy relaying, and DWT relaying. The paper is constructed power system model including power transformer, utilizing the WatATP99, and data collection is made through simulation of various internal faults and inrush. As the results of test. the new proposed algorithm was proven to be faster and more reliable.

This paper is presented the analysis results and simulation results of cascaded H-bridge 7 level inverter with various modulation index. Stepped waveform having number of switching was used to eliminate harmonic components. Switching angles according to modulation index are calculated numerically. Therefore, 3 times of switching with 7 level topology and QWS(Quarter Wave Symmetry) could eliminate 5th and 7th harmonics. The harmonic characteristics are compared to those of space vector modulation method which known as common modulation method in industrial field. Stepped waveform method showed higher ability to reduce, especially lower order of harmonics.

This paper proposes new 12 and 24-pulse rectifier systems using an open-delta auto-connected transformer. This approach employs two static converters to operate it at higher than utility line frequencies and to provide multi-pulse operation. By operating magnetic components at a higher frequency, higher power density can be achieved. A unique feature of the proposed approach is that the magnetic components for the dc-side are also exposed to a higher frequency and these components too are reduced in size. The switching frequency and its harmonic components are absent in the utility input line current. The VA ratings of the transformer and static converter are 0.236/0.292 [pu] and 0.11/0.18 [pu] in 12 and 24-pulse rectifier system, respectively. A finer grade of steel or alternatives can be deployed to increase performance and reduce size further. Analysis, simulations, simulations, design example, and experimental results for a 480[V], 10{kVA] prototype system are presented.
Two types of digital repetitive control systems are analyzed and designed to reduce the error spectrum including not only harmonic but also non-harmonic components. First, a novel gain scheduling algorithm is suggested for conventional and modified repetitive controller is scheduled to reduce the infinite norm of error in frequency domain. For this, the relative error transfer function is mewly defined as the ratio of the error spectrum for the system with a repetitive controller to the error spectrum for the system with a repetitive controller to the error spectrum for the system without a repetitive controller. Secondly, as an alternative of a repetitive control system with the gain scheduling, a repetitive control system with higher order repetitve function is analyzed and designed, where instead of equal weightings, weightings of the higher order repetitive function is determined in such a way that the infinite norm of relative error transfer function is minimized. To show the validities of proposed methods, computer simulation results are illustrated for a typical disk drive head positioning servo system.
Multilevel inverters have been widely used for high-voltage and high-power applications. Their performance is greatly superior to that of conventional two-level inverters due to their reduced total harmonic distortion (THD), lower switch ratings, lower electromagnetic interference, and higher dc link voltages. However, they have some disadvantages such as an increased number of components, a complex pulse width modulation control method, and a voltage-balancing problem. In this paper, a novel nine-level reduced switch cascaded multilevel inverter based on a multilevel DC link (MLDCL) inverter topology with reduced switching components is proposed to improve the multilevel inverter performance by compensating the above mentioned disadvantages. This topology requires fewer components when compared to diode clamped, flying capacitor and cascaded inverters and it requires fewer carrier signals and gate drives. Therefore, the overall cost and circuit complexity are greatly reduced. This paper presents modulation methods by a novel reference and multicarrier based PWM schemes for reduced switch cascaded multilevel inverters (RSCMLI). It also compares the performance of the proposed scheme with that of conventional cascaded multilevel inverters (CCMLI). Simulation results from MATLAB/SIMULINK are presented to verify the performance of the nine-level RSCMLI. Finally, a prototype of the nine-level RSCMLI topology is built and tested to show the performance of the inverter through experimental results.
A model for calculating structure interacted mechanics is proposed. A structural interaction model and controller design based on tuned mass damping (TMD) was developed to control the induced vibration. A key point is to introduce a new analytical model to evaluate the properties of the TMD that recognizes the motion-dependent nonlinear response observed in the simulations. Aiming at the problem of increased current harmonics and low efficiency of permanent magnet synchronous motors for electric vehicles due to dead time effect, a dead time compensation method based on neural network filter and current polarity detection is proposed. Firstly, the DC components and the higher harmonic components of the motor currents are obtained by virtue of what the neural network filters and the extracted harmonic currents are adjusted to the required compensation voltages by virtue of what the neural network filters. Then, the extracted DC components are used for current polarity dead time compensation control to avert the false compensation when currents approach zero. The neural network filter method extracts the required compensation voltages from the speed component and the current polarity detection compensation method obtains the required compensation voltages by discriminating the current polarity. The combination of the two methods can more precisely compensate the dead time effect of the control system to improve the control performance. Furthermore, based on the relaxed method, the intelligent approach of stability criterion can be regulated appropriately and the artificial TMD was found to be effective in reducing cross-wind vibrations.

This paper reports on an improved piezoelectric microspeaker with a high sound pressure level of 90 dB, a total harmonic distortion of less than 15%, and coherence higher than 0.9. The fabricated Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ (PZT) microspeakers have a thickness of only 1 mm including the speaker frame and an active area of 18 mm${\times}$20 mm. To achieve higher sound pressure and lower distortion, the PZT piezoelectric microspeaker has a well-designed speaker frame and a piezoelectric diaphragm consisting of a tilted PZT membrane and silicone buffer layer. From the simulation and measurement results, we confirmed that the silicon buffer layer can lower the first resonant frequency, which enhances the microspeaker's sound pressure at a low frequency range and can also reduce useless distortion generated by the harmonics. The fabricated PZT piezoelectric microspeakers are implemented on a multichannel speaker array system for personal acoustical space generation. The output sound pressure at a 30 cm distance away from the center of the speaker line array is 15 dB higher than the sound pressure at the neighboring region 30 degrees from the vertical axis.
