The objectives of this paper are to measure the concentration of $H_2$O/LiBr solution by measuring the electrical conductivity and to study the effect of the solution temperature and the concentration on the electrical conductivity of the solution. The solution temperature ranges $20^{\circ},\;40^{\circ},\;and\; 60^{\circ}$ for a fixed concentration during the experiment. The valid ranges of the concentration are two regions, low concentration region (1~20% of LiBr) and high concentration region (55~66% of LiBr). The results show that the conductivity of the solution increases linearly with increasing the solution temperature while it increases without creasing the concentration lower than about 35% of LiBr and decreases with increasing the concentration higher than 35%. This paper proposes experimental correlations for the concentration as functions of the solution temperature and the concentration with error band of $\pm7$% for the low concentration region and $\pm1$% for the high concentration region, respectively. The experimental correlation can be practically used in the on-line measurement without any sampling of solution from the closed system.
As a part of in vitro fertilization(IVF) for farm animals, IVF experiment was conducted using New Zealand white rabbits with their sperm capacitated in vivo. The effect of uterine conditions on sperm capacitation and effect of sperm concentration and fertilization media on IVF rate and implantation of in vitro fertilized ova were studied. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Acrosomal reaction, noted after staining, of sperm recovered from ligated and intact uterus of capacitators was 83.0% and 65.7%, respectively. 2. IVF rate of ova inseminated with sperm from ligated uterus tended to be higher in DM or with higher concentration of sperm than in the modified F12 medium or with lower sperm concentration. Cleavage rate of fertilized ova for 48hr in DM was 31.5% for 106/ml and 30.0% for 104/ml of sperm and that in modified F12 medium was 26.0% for 106/ml and 22.3% for 104/ml of sperm. 3. Using the sperm from intact uterus, cleavage rate of fertilized ova showed same tendency as those shown with ligated uterus. The rate was 82.0% for 106/ml and 66.5% for 104/ml of sperm in DM and was 69.0% for 106/ml and 56.5% for 104/ml of sperm in the medium. 4. When normal ova up to 48hr after IVF were cultured for 4 days in either DM or modified F12 medium, ova developed to blastocyst stage showed higher rate in the groups of higher sperm concentration in the both media. The rate was 80.9% and 60.0% for 106/ml and 104/ml of sperm in DM and 91.7% and 71.4% for 106/ml and 104/ml of sperm in the modified F12 medium, respectively. 5. Rate of implantation after transfer of 4- or 8-cell embryos was 36.8%.

Pollutants in aquaculture system effluent mostly originated from solid wastes including uneaten feed and excreta of cultured species. In this research, DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) unit is suggested as an integrated solid control unit especially as a form of IIBG(Inline Injection Bubble Generation) process in aquaculture system. Solid removal performance of DAF unit was examined under various operation and salinity conditions with turbidity and suspended solid. Solid waste removal efficiencies were found to be affected by operation conditions including saturator pressure, recycle ratio, coagulant concentration. Solid removal efficiency was higher under higher saturator pressure and recycle ratio under which condition larger number of bubbles is generated. Coagulant is thought to have important role in creating bubble-particle aggregate by showing better removal efficiency with higher concentration. However higher saline water showed less effectiveness in removing solids by DAF(IIBG). Application of DAF(IIBG) process also showed additional effect in phosphate removal and DO(Dissolved Oxygen) supply. Phosphate existed in polluted water was removed up to 46% after treatment, which is thought to attribute to aluminium phosphate precipitation. And DO concentration was found to increase over 50% of initial saturation concentration after the injection of micro-bubbles. Through experiments on solid removal from aquaculture effluent, DAF(IIBG) process is estimated to be effective solid control method. This property can help aquaculture system being installed and operated simply and effectively.
Screening for antibacterial activities with microorganisms related to the food putrefaction by ethanol extract from Chrysanthemum petals widely used for the traditional wine production, and antibacterial activities of each concentration and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) from the ethanol extract were researched. Antibacterial activity of ehanol extract for B. subtilis was higher in C. boreale than in C. Morifolium, but that of E. coli was higher in C. molifolium than in C. boreale. C. boreale was higher than C. morifolium in the antibacterial activity of ehanol extract and MIC of ehanol extract from C. boreale was 60-70${\mu}\ell$/ml. Ethanol extract from C. boreale was higher Gram(-) than Gram(+) in the antibacterial activities, but Gram(-), Gram(+) were greatly inhibited on growth in 100${\mu}\ell$ concentration.
In this study, cucumber Jangachi using Sake cake was prepared and its quality characteristics verified. After preparing various cucumber Jangachi with different salt concentrations, physicochemical characteristics, hardness and sensory evaluation were investigated. Five samples (0%, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% brine) were used and designated as treatment plots (CJ0, CJ3, CJ6, CJ9 and CJ12, respectively). Higher concentration of brine was associated with reduced pH of cucumber Jangachi and higher total acidity. Salinity decreased significantly as storage period increased. On day 0, it shows similarity to the concentration of brine, whereas it was reduced after day 28. The soluble solid content increased significantly as the storage period increased and decreased slightly after 21 days. Regarding concentration of brine, a higher concentration shows a tendency to increase but the gaps are insignificant. Reducing sugar content increased significantly as the storage period increased. The hardness increased in all treatment plots up to the 14th day, decreased until day 21, and increased thereafter. Following the sensory evaluation, saltiness was not detected in the plots, and CJ6 showed the highest texture score ($4.46{\pm}1.41$). For overall acceptability, CJ6 showed the highest score ($4.33{\pm}1.13$). According to the above results, salinity content of cucumber Jangachi using Sake cake decrease to 0.69~1.52% in 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% brine by the 28th day. Despite decreasing salinity, texture and overall acceptability scores were higher than the above results. Thus, we conclude that it is possible to produce low salt cucumber Jangachi of high quality using Sake cake instead of high salt one.

Health complaints among vinylhouse workers in Sungjoo county, Kyungpook province led to the investigation of heavy metal levels of air, soil and humans as well as physical conditions of the vinylhouse. The average temperature and humidity inside the vinylhouse were 8 higher and 10% point lower, respectively, as compared to the outside. While discomfort index(D. I.) outside was pleasant level(69.2), D. I. inside was 82 at which point 100% of people feels discomfort. Cadmium concentration of soils inside the vinylhouse(0.116 mg/kg) was 1.8 times higher than the soils outside. Arsenic concentration of soils inside the vinylhouse(4.882 mg/kg) was only slightly higher than the soils outside(4.182 ng/kg). However, both heavy metal concentrations detected in soils inside or outside the vinylhouse were within the normal range. Analysis of 10 air samples taken inside the vinylhouse showed that only one sample had a cadmium concentration above the detectable level and the rest of samples were below the detectable levels. While there were no difference of arsenic concentrations in urine between male and female, cadmium concentrations in urine samples of female (3.31 ug/l) was slightly higher than male(2.38 ug/l). Age-dependent increases of cadmium concentrations in urine samples were also observed. However, there was no concentration difference of these heavy metals in urine between vinylhouse workers and non-vinylhouse workers. Urine concentrations of cadmium and arsenic detected from vinylhouse workers or non-vinylhouse workers were within the normal range. The present study represents a first attempt to evaluate physical and environmental risk factors of the vinylhouse affecting the vinylhouse farmer's health. The study revealed that, while physical conditions of the vinylhouse such as temperature and humidity are the possible factors associated with the farmer's complaints, environmental contamination as judged from heavy metal levels in soil, air and humans is not a risk factor contributing to the vinylhouse farmer's health problem.
Effect of slaughter age (24, 28 and 38 months of age) on beef color stability during display of m. serratus ventralis, m. psoas major, m. semitendinosus and m. longissimus thoracis from Japanese Black steers was studied. Steak samples from muscles were over-wrapped with PVC film and displayed under fluorescent lights at $4^{\circ}C$ for 12 days. Percentages of metmyoglobin of steak samples were determined at days 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12. The percentage of metmyoglobin of m. psoas major at day 3 of display in the 24 months group was lower (p<0.05) than that in the 38 months group. The percentage of metmyoglobin of m. semitendinosus at day 6 of display in the 38 months group was higher (p<0.05) than that in the other groups. The percentage of metmyoglobin of m. longissimus thoracis at day 3 of display in the 24 months group was lower (p<0.01) than that in the other groups. The percentage of metmyoglobin of m. longissimus thoracis at day 6 (p<0.01), 9 (p<0.01) and 12 (p<0.05) of display in the 38 months group were higher than those in the other groups. Crude fat concentration in m. longissimus thoracis increased (p<0.05) after 28 months of age. $\alpha$-Tocopherol concentration in m. serratus ventralis in the 38 months group was higher (p<0.001) than that in the other groups. In m. psoas major the $\alpha$-tocopherol concentration in the 38 months group was higher (p<0.05) than that in the 24 months group. The $\alpha$-tocopherol concentration in m. longissimus thoracis increased (p<0.001) with age. These results suggested that in spite of increase in both the crude fat and the $\alpha$-tocopherol concentrations in m. longissimus thoracis, the beef color stability during display became short with age.
To identify an antioxidant system, Se and Vit. E were administered into Hanwoo young sire and the effects of administration on blood components(Se, Vit. E, chemical values, estradiol-17 $\beta$, testosterone) were examined. The 16 heads ranging from twenty to thirty two months of age were randomly assigned to control group, Se-administered group(Se-group), Vit. E-administered group(Vit. E-group) and Se and Vit. E administered group(Se and Vit. E-group). Each reagent (Se : 0.1 mg, Vit. E . 1,500IU, Se+vit. E : 0.1 mg+1,500IU per kg of body weight, respectively) administered 3 times every 30days by intramuscular injection. Se concentration in serum was higher in Se-group and Se and Vit. E-group than in control group and Se and Vit. E-group also was higher than Vit. E-group(p<0.05). Although all Se-, Vit. E-administered groups were a little higher than control group, the injection of Se and Vit. E were not significant effect on Vit. E concentration in serum(p>0.05). All groups showed significant variance by periods, but there were not significantly different among groups in blood chemical values. The estradiol-17 $\beta$ concentrations of all Se-, Vit. E-administered groups were a little higher than those of control group, but there were not significant(p>0.05). There have no significant difference among groups in testosterone concentration. These results indicate that the administration of Se, Se + Vit. E increase Se concentration in Hanwoo young bull.
This study was experimented that developmental effects of bovine in vitro fertilized embryos by coculture system and supplementation of energy materials into simple media. With the ovaries from slaughter house in vitro maturation by 24h, in vitro fertilization was performed with sperms collected by Percoll gradient method. Fertilized embryos were cocultured in 15% FCS+CZB medium with BOEC(bovine oviductal epithelial cell), GCM (granulosa cell monolayer) and MEFC(mouse embryonic fihrohlast cell). And also in this study, there was trying to improve the early developmental rate of embryos by addition of concentration-controlled Na-pyruvate, D-glucose which were used as energy sources into CZB medium. In vitro developmental rate was confirmed by the cleavage rate of 48h post-IVF and the embryo development rate at 240h culture. In the coculture system BOEC had 20.0% of blastocysts rate, which was higher than that of other coculture systems. To determine the optimum concentration for early embryo developmental rate rapidly, through the gradient of concentrations of Na-pyruvate and D-glucose, we focused on the cleavage rate at 48h and blastocysts rate at 240h. In case of Na-pyruvate, cleavage rate and developmental rate over 3-cell were lower at the concentration of 1.OOrnM than the other treatment concentrations, otherwise the blastocysts rate was higher as 23.2% than the others. That result showed that as like reported group which had higher develop-mental rate over 3-cell was also higher to the blastocysts rate. In case of D-glucose, there was no effects through the concentration changes. It was the result of this study for which the use of BOEC coculture system and 1.OOmM Na-pyruvate as an energy source had an effect upon embryo development.
This study was carried out to get a fundamental information for improvement of reproductive performance in gilt. We investigated the effects of breeds on body weight, age, body length, wither's height, girth and backfat thickness, and the serum concentrations of estradiol-17${\beta}$, cortisol and progesterone at first estrus and mating of gilts. A total of 47 gilts of Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire, produced at Livestock Experiment Station, Chungnam livestock sanitation research institute from 2000 through 2002, were used for this experiment. Body weight, age and girth of Duroc at frist estrus and mating were higher than those of Landrace and Yorkshire. There were no differences on body length among the three breeds at frist and mating. Wither's height of Duroc and Yorkshire at first estrus and mating was higher than that of Landrace. Backfat thickness of Yorkshire was thinnest among the three breeds at first estrus, but there were no differences on backfat thickness among the three breeds at first mating. Serum estradiol-17${\beta}$ concentration of Landrace(45.0 pg/ml) at first estrus was higher than that of Yorkshire(27.4 pg/ml) and Duroc(21.8 pg/ml), but there were no differences on estradiol-17${\beta}$ concentration (from 18.5 to 31.9 pg/ml) among the three breeds at first mating. Serum cortisol concentration of Duroc at first esturs and mating was higher than that of Landrace and Yorkshire. There were no differences on serum progesterone concentration among the three breeds at first estrus and mating of gilt.
