The effect of fermentation temperature on the production of high content alcohol has been investigated with high substrate concentration. The maximum specific growth rate, ${\mu}max\;was\;0.461hr^{-1}\;at\;35^{\circ}C$ which was the highest, whereas the maximum biomass concentration waas 8.7g/l at $25^{\circ}C$, at the growth rate lower than at $35^{\circ}C$. Approximately 140g/l of ethanol was produced in the temperature range of 20 to $25^{\circ}C$ with nearly complete comsumption of the substrate. Extended fermentation time has been required at lower temperatures, however, for the maximum values of biomass concentration and alcohol content, hence higher ethanol productivity, as the temperature was elevated to $40^{\circ}C$. The viability of yeasts was greatly improved by lowering the fermentation temperature down to $25^{\circ}C$ and also extended survival of the cells has been observed at lower fermentation temperatures, although the ethanol concentration of both waas higher.
In order to estimate microbial contaminant discharge from diffuse sources, rainfall runoff was monitored at forestry, agriculture and urban watersheds. Total coliform and E. coli were monitored at the study watersheds as they are regulated by the environmental laws. Concentration and EMC (Event Mean Concentration) of coliform of rainfall runoff at the urban watershed were the highest followed by those from agricultural and forestry watersheds. By monitoring coliform concentrations of overlying water and sediment at five monitoring points in the downstream of the Geum River, average concentration from spring to summer was higher than those values from fall to spring. Coliform concentrations in the pore water were higher compared to those of overlying water and closely related with flow rate of the river.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of mercury and arsenic on the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana when treated with three different concentrations. When treated with mercury, there was no noticeable difference in the growth of the plant between the group treated with $0.5\;{\mu}g/L$ (the effluent standard established by the Ministry of Environment) and the group treated with the concentration 100 times higher. They both showed almost the same level of growth as that of the normal plant. But the group of the concentration 10 times higher showed significantly $10\%$ more growth compared with the normal plant. When treated with arsenic, the three different groups all showed a little more growth compared with the normal plant. Interestingly, the group of the concentration 10 times higher than the official standard concentration of arsenic $(50\;{\mu}g/L)$ showed the highest level of growth, significantly $20\%$ more than the normal plant. These results show that some amount of mercury and arsenic in the soil do not have much effect on the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana, and that optimum concentrations of mercury and arsenic can even stimulate the growth of the plant.

The sensitivity analysis is a method to quantify to what extent the output of a model changes with the values of input parameters. This will lead to increase model accuracy through measurement validation. Three line source air quality models, HIWAY 2, PAL, and CALINE 3 were selected for this study. The input parameters analysed included wind speed, wind direction, stability, emission rate, mixing height, receptor distance, initial dispersion coefficient, surface roughness, and averaging time. It turned out that PAL model generally showed higher concentration than other two models, and that between CALINE 3 and HIWAY 2, CALINE 3 showed higher concentration than HIWAY 2 model near the line sources, but beyond a certain downwind distances HIWAY 2 model showed higher concentration. The modesl were very sensitive to wind speed especially in the range of 0 $\sim$ 1 m/s and to wind direction near the parallel wind to streets. In case of emission rate, the output concentration was directly proportional to these input parameters. And the sensitivity of the input parameters such as stability, mixing height, initial dispersion coefficient, surface roughness, and averaging time were not very significant.
Operation characteristics of the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process with electro-flotation (EF) as a solid liquid separation method (EF-SBR) were investigated. EF-SBR process showed excellent solid-liquid separation performance which enabled to separate biosolids from liquid phase within 30 min and to extend cyclic reaction time. Although influent organic loading rate was increased stepwise from 5 to 15 g COD/day, food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio could be maintained about 0.3 g COD/g VSS/day in EF-SBR because biomass concentration could be easily controlled at desired level by EF. However, it was impossible to increase biomass concentration at the same level in control SBR (C-SBR) process because solid-liquid separation by gravity settling showed a limitation at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration with 60 min of settling time. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal efficiency of EF-SBR process was not decreased although influent organic loading rate became 3 times higher than initial value. However, it was seriously deteriorated in C-SBR process after increasing the rate over 10 g COD/day, which was accounted for insufficient organic removal by relatively higher food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio as well as biosolids wash-out by a limitation of gravity sedimentation.
Generally, the economic concept of optimized design and operating conditions in fluidized bed heat exchangers can hardly be realized. Because the lack of fundamental knowledge about the particle flows, the optimum design of the fluidized bed heat exchanger is rather limited. In the present work, measurements are made on pressure drops and friction factors in the horizontal circular tube with solid particles in the circulating water. Two different solid particles of diameters of 3mm and 4mm are covered. The Reynolds numbers are ranged from 10,000 to 45,000. It is concluded that the friction factors for the particles of 4mm diameter are much higher than those for the particles of 3mm diameter. And at the lower particle concentration, the friction factors are strongly influenced by the fluid velocity rather than the particle concentration; However, the effect of the particle concentration on friction factors is also significantly higher at a higher particle concentration operating condition.
The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. water and 70% ethanol extracts. The content of total polyphenol was significantly higher in water extract than in 70% ethanol extract. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of water extract was similar to that of Vit. C at a concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The ABTS radical scavenging activities of water and 70% ethanol extract were similar to that of Vit. C at a concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. SOD-like activity of water extract was higher than that of 70% ethanol extract at a concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ but lower than that of Vit. C. The DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and SOD-like activity increased as concentrations of water and 70% ethanol extracts increased. Cell cytotoxicity was not observed at all concentrations except at $100{\mu}g/mL$ concentration of water extract. Inhibitory activity on NO production effect of water extract was significantly higher than that of 70% ethanol extract. These results show that E. caryophyllata Thunb. has potent biological activities, and their activities were different depending on extraction solvent.
Even though chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) is utilized in a pre-treatment due to its effective sterilizing activity for microorganisms and its safety for food, it has a limitation in maintaining freshness of the food product. In this study, a low-concentration $ClO_2$ gas was produced in a packaging form of air-permeable gel pack so that it could be released continuously over several days. The amount of $ClO_2$ gas emission and microbial inactivation effect against foodborne pathogens were measured during the release of $ClO_2$ gas. As a result of measuring the change of color in order to confirm whether the chlorine dioxide gas was eluted in the form of a sustained release, the yellowness was significantly higher at higher gel pack concentration and higher value during storage periods. The slow-released $ClO_2$ gel-pack showed clear inactivation effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with 99.9% inactivation efficiency. As a result of measuring the sterilization effect of Listeria monocytogenes by the concentration of chlorine dioxide gas, the sterilization effect was increased as the concentration was increased. Therefore, the slow-released $ClO_2$ gel-pack is feasible to apply for industry usages.

Ozone, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea during the period of March 11 .sim. April 19, 1994. During the measurement period, the average SO$_{2}$ and NOx concentrations were about 0.97 ppb and 3.5 ppb, respectively. Average NO concentration was below the detection limit and thus the effect of NO during the period was negligible. The concentrations of SO$_{2}$ and Nox were lower than those at other urban area in Korea but higher than other remote areas in the world. Average $O_{3}$ concentration for the period was about 55 ppb, slightly higher than or comparable to those at remote marine areas in the world. Detailed analyses of trend of gaseous species concentrations show that the effects of local NO emission sources for NOx concentration were significant during the period, while those of local SO$_{2}$ emission sources were not high. Backward trajectory analysis results show that when SO$_{2}$ or $O_{3}$ concentration was higher than the average concentrations, the air parcels were transported from China.
Sodium hypochlorite alkaline was tested against Pseudomonas tolaasii causing bacterial blotch on cultivated oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). The minimum inhibitory concentration of sodium hypochlorite against P. tolaasii contained active chlorine (AC) at 1.4 mg/l on plate assay. The highest cultivation yield was obtained from the treatment of AC 5.7 mg/l. Treatment of sodium hypochlorite at the rate of higher than AC 11.4 mg/l resulted in reduced yields at the harvest. However, the population of total bacteria on the bed surface treated with AC 5.7 mg/l of sodium hypochlorite was maintained to some extent. Inhibitory concentration against total bacteria on the bed surface was over AC 22.8 mg/l. Mushroom mycelium was damaged and its growth strongly inhibited at the concentration of AC 200 mg/l. Mushroom caps showed yellowish symptom by chemical injury by treatments of AC 74.1 mg/l or higher. Sporocarps infected by P. tolaasii were irrevocable at any concentration of sodium hypochlorite. Routine watering with AC 5.7 mg/l from mushroom initiation to the end of picking resulted in reduced bacterial blotch incidence of 40% and 86% at two mushroom farms. The treatment resulted in higher quality mushroom production compared to that conventionally watered with tap water alone.
