  • To overcome the difficulties of discharge measurements during flood season, MWSCM(micowave water surface current meter) which measures river surface velocities without contacting water has been applied in field work since its development. The existing version of MWSCM is for floods so that its applicability is low due to the short periods of floods. Therefore the renovative redesign of MWSCM to increase the applicability was conducted so that it can be applied to the discharge measurements during normal flows as well as flood ones by extending the measurable range of velocity. A newly developed high-performance MWSCM for general use can measure the velocity range of 0.03-20.0 m/s from flood flows to normal flows, whereas MWSCM for floods can measure the velocity range of 0.5-10.0 m/s. The improvement of antenna isolation between transmitter and receiver to block the inflow of transmitted singals to receiver and the improvement of phase noise of oscillator are necessary for detecting low velocity with MWSCM technology. Separate type antenna of transmitting and receiving signals is developed for isolation enhancement and phase locked loop synthesizer as an oscillator is applied to high-performance MWSCM for general use. Microwave frequency of 24 GHz is applied to the new MWSCM rather than 10 GHz to make the new MWSCM small and light for convenient use of it at fields. Improvement requests on MWSCM for floods-stable velocity measurement, self test, low power consumtion, and waterproof and dampproof-from the users of it has been reflected on the development of the new version of MWSCM.

  • This study analyzed the efficiency and uniformity by measuring the temperature change depending on the position in the chamber with the use of QRD (quadratic residue diffusor) microwave capable of inducing even sterilization by changing wavelength phase difference and enhancing the effect on low power. The results are summarized as follows: When irradiating 7 kW of QRD microwave, the highest efficiency was obtained at 35 cm height and in the center of the chamber. When irradiating 5 kW of QRD microwave, high efficiency was obtained on the sides of the chamber. When irradiating 3 kW of QRD microwave to Magnetrons 1, 2 and 3, the temperature uniformity according to the position of the bars was similar in the position of Bar 1 and 2. When irradiating 3 kW of QRD microwave to Magnetrons 3, 4 and 5, the temperature increased by approximately 10 to 20% in Bar 3. When irradiating 5, 7 and 9 kW of magnetron, the average temperature during the irradiation time increased in a similar form independently of the position of the bars. On the other hand, the efficiency of the chamber's proper internal volume was not necessarily proportional to the irradiation dose. When irradiating 3 kW of magnetron for 60 120 and 180 seconds, the temperature increased by approximately 5 to 10 at the edge of the chamber according to the irradiation position of magnetron. The temperature distribution for each position in the horizontal plane was relatively uniform, and the temperature had a tendency to slightly increase at the edge. When irradiating 5, 7 and 9 kW of magnetron, the temperature relatively evenly increased independently of the position of the bars. It was thought necessary to increase the irradiation dose by approximately 10 to 20% by considering the difference in temperature rise according to the position of magnetron.

  • Since phase noise is one of the most important parameters in the design of microwave oscillators, several methods have been proposed to reduce the phase noise. These methods have focused on improving the quality factor of resonators, which result in low phase noise oscillators. Dielectric resonators have been widely used for low phase noise in microwave oscillators due to their high quality factor. However this cannot be used in MMIC oscillators because they have a 3D structure. In this paper, to overcome this problem a novel resonator using open ring type DGS is proposed for improvement of phase noise characteristics that is weak point of oscillator using planar type microstrip line resonator, and oscillator for 5.8GHz band is designed using proposed DGS resonator. The open ring type DGS resonator is composed of DGS cell etched on ground plane under $50{\Omega}$ microstrip line. At the fundamental frequency of 5.8GHz, 6.1dBm output power and -82.7 dBc@100kHz phase noise have been measured for oscillator with ring type DGS resonator. The phase noise characteristics of oscillator is improved about 96.5dB compared to one using the general ${\lambda}/4$ microstrip resonator.

  • In this study, an E-band low-noise amplifier (LNA) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) has been designed using silicon-germanium 130-nm bipolar complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology to suppress unwanted signal gain outside operating frequencies and improve the signal gain and noise figures at operating frequencies. The proposed impedance-controllable filter has series (Rs) and parallel (Rp) resistors instead of a conventional inductor-capacitor (L-C) filter without any resistor in an interstage matching circuit. Using the impedance-controllable filter instead of the conventional L-C filter, the unwanted high signal gains of the designed E-band LNA at frequencies of 54 GHz to 57 GHz are suppressed by 8 dB to 12 dB from 24 dB to 26 dB to 12 dB to 18 dB. The small-signal gain S21 at the operating frequencies of 70 GHz to 95 GHz are only decreased by 1.4 dB to 2.4 dB from 21.6 dB to 25.4 dB to 19.2 dB to 24.0 dB. The fabricated E-band LNA MMIC with the proposed filter has a measured S21 of 16 dB to 21 dB, input matching (S11) of -14 dB to -5 dB, and output matching (S22) of -19 dB to -4 dB at E-band operating frequencies of 70 GHz to 95 GHz.

  • A 2-stage 1 watt MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) HPA(High Power Amplifiers) at 20 GHz band has been designed and fabricated. The $0.15\mu\textrm{m}$ with the width of $400\mu\textrm{m}$for single device pHEMT technology was used for the fabrication of this MMIC HPA. Due to the series feedback technique from source to ground, bias circuits and stabilization circuits on the main microstrip line, the stability factors(Ks) are more than one at full frequency. The independent operation for each stage and excellent S11, S22 less than -20 dB have been obtained by using lange couplers. For beginning the easy design, linear S-parameters have been extracted from the nonlinear equivalent circuit in foundry library, and equivalent circuits of devices at in/output ports were calculated from this S-parameters. The measured performances, which are in well agreement with the predicted ones, showed the MMIC HPA in this paper has the minimum 15 dB of linear gain, -20 dB of reflection coefficients and 31 dBm of output power over 17~25 GHz.

  • The 2011 August 09 Flare is one of the largest X-ray flares of Sunspot Cycle 24 to attract a lot of attention for its various activities detected in coronal images. In this study we concern ourselves mostly on information of high energy electrons produced during this flare provided by hard X ray data from the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) and radio data from the Korean Solar Radio Burst Locator (KSRBL) and Ondrejov. EUV images obtained by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory are used to provide the context of magnetic reconnection. In our results, (1) HXR spectra have a rich spectral morphology. Initially it could be fit by one thermal component (T~30MK) and one single power law nonthermal spectrum, but later a better fit could be made by introducing an additional thermal component (T~55 MK). (2) Time delays between the KSRBL burst and the RHESSI hard X-ray emission were found which are more obvious at low frequencies and insignificant at high frequencies. (3) The HXR source lies in the core of the quadrupolar active region. In our interpretation based on AIA 94 A images, the outer part of the active region erupted to be blown out, leaving the intense hard X-ray emission concentrated in the core. We relate the appearance of the second thermal component to the evolution of the AIA 171 and 94 A images. The time delays of microwave peaks to HXR peaks are interpreted as indicating presence of trapped electrons in larger closed magnetic loops. With these result we conclude that the hard X ray and microwaves are due to impulsive acceleration in the low and high heights and a sigmoidal reconnection scenario.

  • Spectrum analyzer and electromagnetic field meter were used to investigate the EM generation behaviour in different types of home electrical appliances. During microwave oven operation, the EM power measured at a point 30cm apart was measured in the range of 8~11mW/㎡, the strength of the low frequency magnetic field was 60~80mG and the electric field strength was measured at 150~160V/m. For smart phone wireless charging pad, it was measured at an electromagnetic power of 0.4mW/㎡, an electric field of 160 V/m and a magnetic field of 1mG at a point 10cm away. For microwave oven and wireless charging pad, if used within 10cm, the size of the electric field has been measured at a large value that exceeds the human body protection standard and may be hazardous to humans. On the other hand, home appliances such as TVs, hairdryers and refrigerators all showed very low levels of electromagnetic waves, electric fields and magnetic fields, with no harmful effects seen. For electromagnetic shielding, the metal Cu fabric and metal foil had a high level of EM shielding, while polymer films had a low EM shielding characteristic.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of freezing and thawing rate on the physical properties of soybean sprouts to improve the quality of processed soybean sprouts during distribution and storage. Cooked soybean sprouts were frozen by air-blast freezing (ABF) system at $-45^{\circ}C$ or natural air convection freezing (NCF) system at $-24^{\circ}C$, then thawed using microwave oven by varying output power (0, 400, 800 and 1,000 W) until $75^{\circ}C$. The quality of soybean sprouts was measured by the water content, hardness and springiness. In addition, the internal microstructure of soybean sprouts was observed by optical microscope. For results, water content of soybean sprouts thawed by 1,000 W in a microwave showed the lowest value after natural air convection freezing. Springiness of soybean sprouts thawed by all amounts of output power was decreased in comparison with control. Hardness was increased only in soybean sprouts thawed by 1,000 W after air-blast freezing. However the gaps between springiness and hardness were relatively small with control at 1,000 W thawing, after air-blast freezing. Internal microstructure of the soybean sprouts was more damaged as freezing and thawing time were increased. In conclusion, high freezing and thawing rate might improves the quality of soy bean sprout, and IQF freezing and 1,000 W of microwave thawing appears to be the optimum condition for frozen HMR production. From the results freezing and thawing process parameters might can be use as quality control parameters as various type of sprout products processing.

  • The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro potential of water extract from torrefied oak wood as a natural antioxidant. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was assessed by employing different in vitro assays, including reducing power, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)], and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant potential) assays. The DPPH activity of the extract was increased in a dose-dependent manner. Measurement of total flavonoid content of water extract from torrefied oak wood was achieved using an aluminum chloride colorimetric assay; the extract contained 192.12 mg/g flavonoid, which was significantly high when compared with standard quercetin. The results obtained in this study indicate that water extract from torrefied oak wood has significant potential for use as a natural antioxidant agent.
