BLDC motors have the strong point of allowing high-efficiency operation, yet with the weak point of requiring position information for operation. Moreover, there have recently been frequent cases where the product differentiation of even a cheap BLDC motor demanded a high level of control performance similar to that of a controller using a high-precision position sensor. This paper proposes low cost position sensor that enables the acquisition of rotor position information based on index and incremental PWM, using a single position sensor instead of an expensive incremental encoder or a cheap 3 phase hall sensor. The characteristic of the proposed encoder is that index information at every $60^{\circ}$ of electrical angle is inscribed on the encoder disk, as well as a multiple number of values representing information about PWM, which is obtained by modulating information about the electrical angle of the rotor that has the resolution of $60^{\circ}$. Such a method has the characteristic of enabling the acquisition of high-precision position information based on the information about a multiple number of PWM waveforms and counter values that have all been inscribed on the encoder disk for each $60^{\circ}$ range. The feasibility of the proposed new encoder was verified by fabricating a prototype encoder generating 240 pulses, followed by confirming its performance using Micom's capture and software counter functions.

This study was carried out for understanding the characteristics of the spray around high speed vessels. Prismatic planing hull made of an acrylate board was used to the tests. The distribution of local spray velocity were estimated from the analysis of the spray visualization. A new test system for measuring the spray thickness is proposed, and was used to estimate the local spray thickness in the model. The pressure distributions on the bottom of the hull are measured and integrated to estimate the pressure drag of the model in the towing tests. Finally. the spray drag/lift component is separated from the total drag/lift on the prismatic hull. These test results show that the spray drag component on high speed vessels is relatively large and important in total drag.
To keep the ocean environment from pollutions, strict international requirements on the controllability are arisen to the VLCC. Especially in low speed operations near the harbor, the VLCC is often supported by tug to replenish the insufficient rudder force. When water jet is blown to the flapped rudder, the Coanda effect induces a high-lift force by delaying stall and re-enforcing circulation in a large angle of attack (Lachmann 1961, Ahn 2003). Based on numerous research efforts, the rudder system supported by the Coanda effect was devised and its performances were evaluated in the towing tank for a large VLCC model. Hydrodynamic forces acting on the rudder system were measured with a water jet blowing on the rudder surface and compared with those acting on a conventional rudder. The effectiveness of the new rudder system was proven through an experimental evaluation.

This study was to solve the lift problem of the existing unit curtain wall type by using the vertical material mullion as a rail in curtain wall, which is recently used as an external finishing material for high-rise buildings. It has been shown that the application of the curtain wall mullion's rail can be quantified even at 20m/sec wind speed through the Mock-Up test. Based on the sites selected for comparison of construction methods, it was analyzed that the construction period could be shortened by 48 days, or about 20 percent. It was analyzed that the number of construction workers could be reduced by about 33 percent from the previous nine to six. Based on these results, assuming the installation of curtain wall units of 10,000㎡, it is judged that construction cost can be reduced by 80% or more.

In this paper, a finite element analysis technique of rolling stock models for collision-induced derailments was suggested using rolling contacts for wheel-rail interaction. The collision-induced derailments of rolling stock can be categorized into two patterns of wheel-climb and wheel-lift according to the friction direction between wheel flange and rail. The wheel-climb derailment types are classified as Climb-up, Climb/roll-over and Roll-over-C types, and the wheel-lift derailment types as Slip-up, Slip/roll-over and Roll-over-L types. To verify the rolling contact simulations for wheel-rail interaction, dynamic simulations of a single wheelset using Recurdyn of Functionbay and Ls-Dyna of LSTC were performed and compared for the 6-typical derailments. The collision-induced derailment simulation of the finite element model of KHST (Korean High Speed Train) was conducted and verified using the theoretical predictions of a simplified wheel-set model proposed for each derailment type.
As the number of tall buildings is increasing, the high-speed lift is necessary in the modern world. Therefore, the further considerations for associated safety devices of lifts were required by the International Standards. In order to stop the moving of cage and keep it, the lifts have to be provided with means that can detect the unintended car movement. Therefore, the International Standard Safety Rules for the construction and installation of lifts had been revised. This paper describes the operation principles of the Rope Brake to fit the Unintended Car Movement Protection (UCMP) means required by the International Standards. This paper confirmed that the performance of these devices was suitable in the scope of the safety standards. This paper also analyzed that the shocks on working of these devices in a car would be dangerous to each passenger differently. Thus, this paper proposes a new design that the circuit diagram of the Unintended Car Movement Protection systems should be improved from the existing design to solve these internal shock problems. So, it is expected to protect passengers from the internal shocks by working of Rope Brake due to irrelevant factors.
In this paper, an experimental study on the aerodynamic characteristics of a variable span wing flying inside a channel guideway is accomplished using wind tunnel testing. A variable span wing with a NACA 0012 airfoil section was fabricated and actuated using a linear servo motor. The aerodynamic effects of 1) wing aspect ratio, 2) ground effect, and 3) the gap between the wingtip and the wing fence were investigated. It was found that both ground effect and wing fence gap increased lift. Also, the wing fence gap does not significantly affect drag. Therefore, it was found that a variable span mechanism can be used as an effective high lift device when flap use is limited.

We herein propose a systematic design method of hydraulic pipes used in heavy construction equipment. We found that even though many design studies have been conducted regarding major hydraulic components such as pumps, cylinders, and control valves, studies regarding the optimal design of hydraulic pipes are scarce. In this study, the design of four types of pipes is considered: two high-pressure and two low-pressure pipes. First, fluid flow analysis was conducted based on oil flow and pressure for various radii of curvature. For a check-valve pipe, we considered the location of an inlet pipe. We could visualize fluid flow inside the pipe according to the flow velocity and pressure distribution. Based on fluid flow analysis, we conducted a structural analysis that revealed the stress distribution and concentration for each pipe design. We selected the best design parameters for each pipe design, fabricated the pipes, and subsequently tested them for validity.

In Korea, the importance of marine activities is great, and automatic weather observation facilities are operating on land to investigate abnormal weather phenomena caused by industrialization; however, the number of facilities at sea is insufficient. Marine survey ships are operated to establish marine safety information, but there are many places where marine survey ships are difficult to access and operating costs are high. Therefore, a small, unmanned vessel capable of marine surveys must be developed. The sail has a significant impact on the sailing performance, so much research has been conducted. In this study, the camber effect, which is a design variable of the twin curvy sail known to have higher aerodynamic performance than existing airfoil shapes, was investigated. Flow analysis results for five cases with different camber sizes show that the lift coefficient is highest when the camber size is 9%. Curvy twin sails had the highest lift coefficient at an angle of attack of 23° because of the interaction of the port and starboard sails. The port sail had the highest lift coef icient at an angle of attack of 20°, and the starboard sail had the lowest lift coef icient at an angle of attack of 15°. In addition, the curvy twin sail had a higher lift coefficient than NACA 0018 at all angles of attack.
