Application of Mechanochemical Processing for Preparation of Si3N4-based Powder Mixtures

  • Mechanochemical processing (MCP) involves several high-energy collisions of powder particles with the milling media and results in the increased reactivity/sinterability of powder. The present paper shows results of mechanochemical processing (MCP) of silicon nitride powder mixture with the relevant sintering additives. The effects of MCP were studied by structural changes of powder particles themselves as well as by the resulting sintering/densification ability. It has been found that MCP significantly enhances reactivity and sinterability of the resultant material: silicon nitride ceramics could be pressureless sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$. Nevertheless, a degree of a silicon nitride crystal lattice and powder particle destruction (amorphization) as detected by XRD studies, is limited by the specific threshold. If that value is crossed then particle's surface damage effects are prevailing thus severe evaporation overdominates mass transport at elevated temperature. It is discussed that the cross-solid interaction between particles of various chemical composition, triggered by many different factors during mechanochemical processing, including a short-range diffusion in silicon nitride particles after collisions with other types of particles plays more important role in enhanced reactivity of tested compositions than amorphization of the crystal lattice itself. Controlled deagglomeration of $Si_3N_4$ particles during the course of high-energy milling was also considered.

  • Mechanical properties of oxide based materials could be improved by nanocomposite processing. To investigate optimum route for fabrication of nanocomposite enabling mass production, high energy ball milling and Pulse Electric Current Sintering (PECS) were adopted. By high energy ball milling, the $Al_2O_3$-based composite powder with dispersed Cu grains below 20 nm in diameter was successfully synthesized. The PECS method as a new process for powder densification has merits of improved sinterability and short sintering time at lower temperature than conventional sintering process. The relative densities of the $Al_2O_3$-5vol%Cu composites sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$ with holding temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ were 95.4% and 95.7% respectively. Microstructures revealed that the composite consisted of the homogeneous and very fine grains of $Al_2O_3$ and Cu with diameters less than 40 nm and 20 nm respectively The composite exhibited enhanced toughness compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The influence of the Cu content upon fracture toughness was discussed in terms of microstructural characteristics.

  • In this work we synthesized both MgB2 and Carbon doped MgB2 superconductor with Ag addition via high energy milling and substituent heat treatment. Heat treatments were performed at $900\;^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in flowing Ar gas. We varied amount of Ag powder. In a range of Ag powder was 0~5wt%. The effect of Ag was correlated with superconducting properties. The results show a slight decrease in critical temperature ($T_c$) and a reduction of critical current density ($J_c$) at high fields for the Ag-doped samples as compared to the un-doped samples. Reduction of $J_c$ may be due to the formation of MgAg compound.

현미 조절에 관한 연구(II) -함수율 조질 후 8시간 숙성에 따른 정백특성- (A Study on Conditioning of the Brown Rice (II) -Milling characteristic with eight hours′ripeness after conditioning moisture content-)

  • The goal of this research was to an optimum conditions for the brown rice conditioning from data of milling characteristics after conditioning of the brown rice. The range of the initial moisture content of the sample was 13%, 14%, and 15%, the range of the increment of the moisture content was 0.4% and 0.8% with respect to the initial moisture content, and a ripe time after conditioning was eight hours. The results obtained from this research can be summarized as fellows. 1 The crack ratio after conditioning the brown rice with the initial moisture content was increased as the initial moisture content decreased and increment of the moisture content increased. The crack ratio of the milled rice was increased than that of the non-conditioned brown rice and decreased with the conditioned brown rice with the increment of the moisture content of 0.4% and 0.5%. 2. The broken rice ratio after conditioning the brown rice with the initial moisture content was a little higher than that of the non-conditioned brawn rice. The broken ratio of the conditioned brown rice with the increment of the moisture content of 0.4% was increased around 0.2∼0.4% with respect to the non-conditioned brown riced and the broken ratio of the brown rice was high with increased amount of water sprayed during conditioning process. 3. The moisture content of the milled rice after conditioning the brown rice with the initial moisture content increased around 0.3∼0.8% with respect to the non-conditioned milled rice. 4. The electric energy consumption on milling process with the conditioned brown rice by the initial moisture content was decreased 3.4∼39.1% with respect to the non-conditioned brown rice.

분말야금법을 활용한 나노 하이브리드 구조 철-망간계 분말야금재 제조 (Development of Fe-Mn-based Hybrid Materials Containing Nano-scale Oxides by a Powder Metallurgical Route)

  • The automotive industry has focused on the development of metallic materials with high specific strength, which can meet both fuel economy and safety goals. Here, a new class of ultrafine-grained high-Mn steels containing nano-scale oxides is developed using powder metallurgy. First, high-energy mechanical milling is performed to dissolve alloying elements in Fe and reduce the grain size to the nanometer regime. Second, the ball-milled powder is consolidated using spark plasma sintering. During spark plasma sintering, nanoscale manganese oxides are generated in Fe-15Mn steels, while other nanoscale oxides (e.g., aluminum, silicon, titanium) are produced in Fe-15Mn-3Al-3Si and Fe-15Mn-3Ti steels. Finally, the phases and resulting hardness of a variety of high-Mn steels are compared. As a result, the sintered pallets exhibit superior hardness when elements with higher oxygen affinity are added; these elements attract oxygen from Mn and form nanoscale oxides that can greatly improve the strength of high-Mn steels.

Mechanical Properties of Bulk Amorphous Ti50Cu20Ni20Al10 Fabricated by High-energy Ball Milling and Spark-plasma Sintering

  • Ti$_{50}$Cu$_{20}$Ni$_{20}$Al$_{10}$ quaternary amorphous alloy was prepared by high-energy ball milling process. A complete amorphization was confirmed for the composition of Ti$_{50}$Cu$_{20}$Ni$_{20}$Al$_{10}$ after milling for 30hrs. Differential scanning calorimetry showed a large super-cooled liquid region ($\Delta$T$_x$ = T$_x$ T$_g$, T$_g$ and T$_x$: glass transition and crystallization onset temperatures, respectively) of 80 K. Prepared amorphous powders of Ti$_{50}$Cu$_{20}$Ni$_{20}$Al$_{10}$ were consolidated by spark-plasma sintering. Densification behavior and microstructure changes were investigated. Samples sintered at higher temperature of 713 K had a nearly full density. With increasing the sintering temperature, the compressive strength increased to fracture strength of 756 MPa in the case of sintering at 733 K, which showed a 'transparticle' fracture. The samples sintered at above 693 K showed the elongation maximum above 2%.

Mo 나노분말의 소결거동 및 기계적 특성 (Sintering Behavior and Mechanical Property of Mo Nanopowders)

  • The sintering behavior and mechanical property of Mo nanopowder was investigated as a function of various sintering condition. Mo oxide nanopowders were milled using a high energy ball-milling process. After the ball milling for 20h, the crystalline size of $MoO_3$ was about 20 nm. The $MoO_3$ nanopowders were reduced at the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ without holding time in $H_2$ atmosphere. The sinterability of Mo nanopowder and commercial Mo powder was investigated by dilatometric analysis. Mo nanopowder and commercial Mo powder were sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hand $1500^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, respectively. In both specimens the measured relative density was about 95%. But the measured hardness values were 2.34 GPa for nanopowder and 1.87 GPa for commercial powder. Probably due to finer grain size of the sintered body prepared from Mo nanopowder than that prepared using commercial Mo powder. The mean grain sizes were measured to be about 1.4 mm and 6.2 mm, respectively.

Study on the Improvement of the Electrochemical Characteristics of Surface-modified V-Ti-Cr alloy by Ball-milling

  • Vanadium based solid solution alloys have been studied as a potential negative electrode of Ni/MH battery due to their high hydrogen storage capacity. In order to improve the kinetic property of V-Ti alloy in KOH electrolyte, the ball-milling process with Ni, which has a catalytic effect of hydrogen absorption/desorption, was carried out to modify the surface properties of V-Ti-Cr alloys with high hydrogen storage capacity. Moreover, to overcome the problem of poor cycle life, V-Ti alloy substituted by Cr, V0.68 Ti0.20 Cr0.12, has been developed showing a good cycle performance (keeping about 80 % of initial discharge capacity after 200 cycles). The cycle life of surface-modified V0.68 Ti0.20 Cr0.12 alloy was improved by suppressing the formation of TiO2 layer on the alloy surface while decreasing the amount of dissolved vanadium in the KOH electrolyte. In order to promote the effect of Ni coating on the surface property of V0.68 Ti 0.20 Cr 0.12 alloy by ball-milling, filamentary-typed Ni, which has higher surface coverage area than sphere-typed Ni was used as a surface modifier. Consequently, the surface-modified V0.68 Ti0.20 Cr0.12 alloy electrode showed a improved discharge capacity of 460 mAh/g.

50μm급 이트리아 안정화 지르코니아 비드의 미세구조 및 마모 조건에 따른 마모율 분석 (Analysis of Attrition Rate of 50μm Size Y2O3 Stabilized Zirconia Beads with Different Microstructure and Test Conditions)

  • This study analyzes the mechanical properties, including the attrition rate, of $50{\mu}m$ size yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) beads with different microstructures and high-energy milling conditions. The yttria distribution in the grain and grain-boundary of the fully sintered beads relates closely to Vickers hardness and the attrition rate of the YSZ beads. Grain size, fractured surfaces, and yttrium distribution are analyzed by electronic microscopes. For standardization and a reliable comparison of the attrition rate of zirconia beads with different conditions, Zr content in milled ceramic powder is analyzed and calculated by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer(XRF) instead of directly measuring the weight change of milled YSZ beads. The beads with small grain sizes sintered at lower temperature exhibit a higher Vickers hardness and lower attrition rate. The attrition rate of $50{\mu}m$ YSZ beads is measured and compared with the various materials properties of ceramic powders used for high-energy milling. The attrition rate of beads appears to be closely related to the Vickers hardness of ceramic materials used for milling, and demonstrates more than a 10 times higher attrition rate with Alumina(Hv ~1650) powder than $BaTiO_3$ powder (Hv ~315).

A Study on the Surface Roughness of Aluminum Alloy for Heat Exchanger Using Ball End Milling

  • Aluminum alloy is a material with a high strength-weight ratio and excellent thermal conductivity. It neither readily corrodes nor quickly weakens at low temperatures, but can be easily recycled. Because of these features, aluminum heat exchangers are widely used in aluminum alloy. In addition, the aluminum alloy used in other areas is expected to gradually increase. As a result, researchers have been continuously studying the cutting patterns of aluminium alloy. However, such studies are fewer than those on the cutting patterns of ordinary steel. Moreover, the research on ball endmilling with aluminium alloys has not received much attention. Therefore, in this study, an attempt was made to find the optimal cutting pattern among the seven cutting patterns for the machining of the commonly used aluminum alloy using ball endmilling for a heat exchanger. The optimal pattern was found by comparing the different shapes and surface roughness values produced by the seven patterns.
