  • A new form of composite column, concrete-filled round-ended steel tubes (CFRTs), has been proposed as piers or columns in bridges and high-rise building and has great potential to be used in civil engineering. Hence, the objective of this paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation on the flexural behavior of CFRTs through combined experimental results and ABAQUS standard solver. The failure mode was discussed in detail and the specimens all behaved in a very ductile manner. The effect of different parameters, including the steel ratio and aspect ratio, on the flexural behavior of CFRTs was further investigated. Furthermore, the feasibility and accuracy of the numerical method was verified by comparing the FE and experimental results. The moment vs. curvature curves of CFRTs during the loading process were analyzed in detail. The development of the stress and strain distributions in the core concrete and steel tube was investigated based on FE models. The composite action between the core concrete and steel tube was discussed and clarified. In addition, the load transfer mechanism of CFRT under bending was introduced comprehensively. Finally, the predicted ultimate moment according to corresponding designed formula is in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This study investigates the experimental parameters of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to enhance the measurement technique for turbulent flow fields around a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number (Re) of 1.4×105. At the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO), we utilized the cavitation tunnel and PIV system to capture the instantaneous flow fields and statistically obtained the mean flow fields. An aspect ratio and blockage ratio of 16.7% and 6.0%, respectively, were considered to minimize the tunnel wall effect on the cylinder wakes. The optimal values of the pulse time and the number of flow fields were determined by comparing the contours of mean streamlines, velocities, Reynolds shear stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy under their different values to ensure accurate and converged results. Based on the findings, we recommend a pulse time of 45 ㎲ corresponding to a particle moving time of 3-4 pixels, and at least 3,000 instantaneous flow fields to accurately obtain the mean flow fields. The results of the present study agree well with those of previous studies that examined the end of the subcritical flow regime.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received increased interest in reinforcing research for polymer matrix composites due to their exceptional mechanical characteristics. Its high surface area/volume ratio and aspect ratio enable polymer-based composites to make the most of its features. This study focuses on the experimental tensile testing and fabrication of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams, exploring various micromechanical models. By examining the performance of these models alongside experimental results, the research aims to better understand and optimize the mechanical properties of CNTRC materials. Tensile properties of neat epoxy and 0.3%; 0.4% and 0.5% by CNT reinforced laminated single layer (0°/90°) carbon fiber composite beams were investigated. The composite plates were produced in accordance with ASTM D7264 standard. The tensile test was performed in order to see the mechanical properties of the composite beams. The results showed that the optimum amount of CNT was 0.3% based on the tensile capacity. The capacity was significantly reduced when 0.4% CNT was utilized. Moreover, the experimental results are compared with Finite Element Models using ABAQUS. Hashin Failure Criteria was utilized to predict the tensile capacity. Good conformance was observed between experimental and numerical models. More importantly is that Young' Moduli of the specimens is compared with the prediction Halpin-Tsai and Mixture-Rule. Although Halpin-Tsai can accurately predict the Young's Moduli of the specimens, the accuracy of Mixture-Rule was significantly low.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety of ultra-high strength concrete columns with 100 MPa compressive strength for the requirement of ACI provisions. Eight 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the cross section $300{\times}300mm$ and the aspect ratio 4. The main variables are axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. Consequently, to secure the ductile behavior of 100 MPa ultra-high strength concrete columns, ACI provisions for the requirement of transverse steel may considered axial load level and the details of transverse reinforcement.

  • Thick pipes which have large thickness have been used in fields of ocean and industrial plants, and for oil pipelines, water pipes and pipe arrangement. In manufacture of the pipes, roll bending process has been used mostly. However, studies on the pipe forming processes using brake press have been performed in recent days. Normally, the brake press has high aspect ratio, so analysis of structural integrity should be conducted. In this study, the evaluation of structural integrity of the brake bending press was carried out for thick pipe forming process.

  • Recently, with increasing efficiency of DSC (photo-electrochemical using a nano-particle), The Performance of DSC solar generation system also needs improvement. The approach consists of a Fly-back DC-DC (transfer ratio 1:10) converter to boost the DSC cell voltage to 300VDC. The four switch (MOSFET) inverter is employed to produce 220V, 60Hz AC outputs. High performance, easy manufacturability, lower component count., safety and cost are addressed. Protection and diagnostic features form an important part of the design. Another highlight of the proposed design is the control strategy, which allows the inverter to adapt to the: requirements of the load as well as the power source. A unique aspect of the design is the use of the DSP TMS320LF2406 to control the inverter by current and voltage feed-back. Efficient and smooth control of the: power drawn from the DSC Cell is achieved by controlling the front end DC-DC converter in current mode.

  • Pulse laser welding was performed on C22 metal bellows. The results can be summarized as follows: Laser welded metal bellows had less thermal distortion, narrow HAZ, high aspect ratio in comparison with other welding processes like TIG, Plasma welding. Laser welded bellows has higher tensile strengths than that C22 base metal. The value of hardness in laser weld metal was measured 100-120 Hv, it was decreased compared to the base metal. It is reasoned that due to the annealed by heat input during the laser welding.
