Convection-dominated melting in a rectangular cavity is analyzed numerically with particular attention to the multi-cellular flows in the melt. At the earlier stage of the melting, the melt region is quite similar to a cavity with high aspect rati71, where the multi-cellular natural convection appears. Numerical results show that the formation and evolution of the multiple flow cells in the melt region is approximately similar to t]tat of a single-phase flow in a tall cavity with the same aspect ratio; however, the continuous change of the melt region due to the melting affects the detailed process. Also, numerical aspects for the prediction of the detailed flow structure in the melt are discussed.
A numerical study on oscillatory thermocapillary flow in half-zone has performed to understand the effect of axial rotation. 2d unsteady code is developed to observe the onset of oscillation. 2cs Silicone oil with Prandtl number of 26.5 is used as a working fluid. The critical temperature difference at onset of oscillation is investigated under the different aspect ratios and rotation modes. It is shown that the onset of oscillation is delayed when aspect ratio reduces and rotating speed increases. The oscillatory flow is strongly reduced under top rotation and co-rotation modes, while it is augmented under bottom rotation and counter-rotation modes. It is thought that interaction between return flow and bottom wall is important to explain the oscillatory flow.
Here, the dynamic instability characteristics of aero-thermo-mechanically stressed functionally graded plates are investigated using finite element procedure. Temperature field is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface and varied in thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to simple power law distribution. For the numerical illustrations, silicon nitride/stainless steel is considered as functionally graded material. The aerodynamic pressure is evaluated based on first-order high Mach number approximation to the linear potential flow theory. The boundaries of the instability region are obtained using the principle of Bolotin's method and are conveniently represented in the non-dimensional excitation frequency-load amplitude plane. The variation dynamic instability width is highlighted considering various parameters such as gradient index, temperature, aerodynamic and mechanical loads, thickness and aspect ratios, and boundary condition.
The seed step-coverage enhancement process (SSEP) using Pd/Cu/PVP colloids was investigated for the filling of through silicon via (TSV) without void. TEM analysis showed that the Pd/Cu nano-particles were well dispersed in aqueous solution with the average diameter of 6.18 nm. This Pd/Cu nano-particles were uniformly deposited on the substrate of Si/$SiO_2$/Ti wafer using electrophoresis with the high frequency Alternating Current (AC). After electroless Cu deposition on the substrate treated with Pd/Cu/PVP colloids, the adhesive property between deposited Cu layer and substrate was evaluated. The Cu deposit obtained by SSEP with Pd/Cu/PVP colloids showed superior adhesion property to that on Pd ion catalyst-treated substrate. Finally, by implementing the SSEP using Pd/Cu/PVP colloids, we achieved 700% improvement of step coverage of Cu seed layer compared to PVD process, resulting in void-free filling in high aspect ratio TSV.
The present study investigates the effects of rib arrangements and aspect ratios of a rectangular duct simulating the cooling passage of a gas turbine blade. Two different V-shaped rib configurations are tested with the aspect ratios (W/H) of 3 to 6.82. One is the continuous V-shaped rib configuration with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle, and the other is the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle. The square ribs with the pitch to height ratio of 10.0 are installed on the test section in a parallel arrangement for both rib configurations. Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter are changed from 10,000 to 30,000. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure local heat/mass transfer coefficients. For the continuous V-shaped rib configuration, two pairs of counter-rotating vortices are generated in a duct, and high transfer region is formed at the center of the ribbed walls of the duct. However, for the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to its geometric feature, and more uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained for all tested cases
Design of a reformer consisting of combustion chamber and reforming chamber was investigated for a 1 kW and a 5 kW polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), respectively, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). First, the 1kW reformer was considered to obtain the reliability of the numerical study. It was modeled, calculated and compared with experimental data. Second, the 5kW reformer was considered for a geometric study. Three tip sizes (35, 40, and 45 mm) and five aspect ratios was selected. It was found that the optimum was at tip sizes of 40 and 45 mm, at aspect ratios of -10% and -20% of the standard length.
Investigation on the fuel adhering on a wall was carried out experimentally to clarify the characteristics of impinging diesel sprays. Diesel sprays were injected into a high-pressure chamber of cold state and impinged to a wall having various impingement distances and ambient pressures. Photographs of both the fuel film and the post-impingement spray were taken through a transparent wall. Adhered fuel mass on a wall was measured by means of dividing into two types of fuel state: the fuel film itself; and sparsely adhered fuel droplets. Adhering fuel ratio was predicted and further the distribution of fuel mass for impinging diesel spray was analyzed as a function of time. As result, with an increase of the ambient pressure, both the maximum fuel film diameter and the adhered fuel ratio decreased. Based on some assumptions, the adhering fuel mass increased rapidly until the fuel film diameter approached the maximum value, and then increased comparatively gradually.
Prandtl's Lifting-line theory is the classical theory of calculating aerodynamic properties. Though it is classical method, it predicts the aerodynamic properties well. By lifting-line theory, high aspect ratio is critical factor to decrease induced drag. And 'elliptic-similar' wing also makes the minimum induced drag. But due to the problem of manufacturing, tapered wing is preferred and have been utilized. In this Paper, by using Edison CFD, verifying the classical lifting-line theory. To consider induced drag only, using Euler equation as governing equation instead of full Navier-Stokes equation. Refer to the theory, optimum taper ratio which makes the minimum induced drag is 0.3. Utilizing the CFD results, plotting oswald factor over various taper ratio and investigating whether the consequences are valid or not. As a result, solving Euler equation by EDISON CFD cannot guarantee the theoretical values because it is hard to set the proper grid to solve. Results are divided into two cases. One is the values are decreased gradually and another seems to following tendency, but values are all negative number.
