  • The mycoflora on the hair in 25 samples of each of goats and sheep collected from Libya was analyzed using two isolation methods at $25^{\circ}C$. Seventy species and 3 varieties belonging to 31 genera were collected from the two substrates. The hairs of sheep were polluted with fungi than goat, contained high total counts and number of genera and species. Two species of true dermatophytes were isolated namely Trichophyton rubrum and T. terrestre. Several keratiophilic species were isolated of which Chrysosporium indicum, C. keratinophilum and C. tropicum were the most prevalent. The commonest saprophytes in order of frequency were members of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Emericella, Alternaria and Cochliobolus.

  • Pinewood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is a serious pathogenic worm that quickly dry pine trees to death. Recently, PWN has been devastating huge amounts of conifer trees in Korea. As a first step to explore the association and ecological roles of fungi in PWN life cycle in Korea, in this study we first isolated and indentified fungi from PWN-infested Korean pine and Japanese black pine wood sampled in Jinju, Sacheon, Pocheon, Chuncheon, Gwangju, and Hoengseong in Korea. A total of 144 fungal isolates were obtained from Japanese black pine wood and 264 fungal isolates from Korean pine wood. Their morphology and nucleotide sequences of the ITS rDNA and ♌-tubulin gene were examined for species identification. Ophiostoma ips, Botrytis anthophila, Penicillium sp., Hypocrea lixii, Trichoderma atroviride, O. galeiforme, Fusarium proliferatum were identified from Japanese black pine wood. Leptographium koreanum, L. pini-densiflorae, Ophiostoma ips, Penicillium raistrick, Trichoderma sp. were isolated from Korean pine wood. O. ips and L. koreanum were the major species on the two different PWN-infected pine tree. The cultivation of PWN on fungal mat of the identified species did some enhance PWN reproduction. The ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis, is a serious pest of oak trees in Korea. In this study we investigated filamentous fungi present in the body of the beetle. Fourteen genera of filamentous fungi belonging to Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were isolated. All the obtained genera were isolated in the mitosporic state. The identified fungi were classified in 11 distinct orders including the Ascomycota (Eurotiales, Hypocreales, Microascales, Ophiostomatales, Pleosporales, and Sordiales) and Basidiomycota (Agaricales, Corticiales, Polyporales, and Russulales Xylariales). Within Ascomycota, 13 species were found. Meanwhile five species were found within Basidiomycota. The results showed the presence of diverse fungi in P. koryoensis. Among the isolated fungi, some were able to produce wood degrading enzymes. Further fungal isolation was performed with P. koryoensis infested Quercus mongolica trees sampled at Kumdan mountain in Hanam-Si, Gyeonggi province from June of 2009 to June of 2010. Penicillin spp. and Trichoderma spp. were the major species of mold fungi group. Pichia guilliermondii was the major species of mold yeast group. Raffaelea quercus-mongolicae was also isolated, but its isolation frequency was not high. Other species identified were Ambrosiella xylebori, Fusarium solani, Cryphonectria nitschke, Chaetomium globosum, and Gliocladium viride, Candida kashinagacola, C. maritima, C. vanderkliftii, Saccharomycopsis crataegensis.

  • A methodology to evaluate the seismic performance of interface piping systems that cross the isolation interface in the seismically isolated nuclear power plant (NPP) was developed. The developed methodology was applied to the safety-related interface piping system to demonstrate the seismic performance of the target piping system. Not only the seismic performance for the design level earthquakes but also the performance for the beyond design level earthquakes were evaluated. Two artificial seismic ground input motions which were matched to the design response spectra and two historical earthquake ground motions were used for the seismic analysis of piping system. The preliminary performance evaluation results show that the excessive relative displacements can occur in the seismically isolated piping system. If the input ground motion contained relatively high energy in the low frequency region, we could find that the stress response of the piping system exceed the allowable stress level even though the intensity of the input ground motion is equal to the design level earthquake. The structural responses and seismic performances of piping system were varied sensitively with respect to the intensities and frequency contents of input ground motions. Therefore, for the application of isolation system to NPPs and the verification of the safety of piping system, the seismic performance of the piping system subjected to the earthquake at the target NPP site should be evaluated firstly.

  • Because of the design and construction requirements, the nuclear structures need to maintain the structural integrity under both design state and extreme earthquake shaking. The base-isolation technology can significantly reduce the damages of structures under extreme earthquake events, and effectively protect the safeties of structures and internal equipment. This study proposes a base-isolation design for the AP1000 nuclear shield building on considering the performance requirements of the seismic isolation systems and devices of shield building. The seismic responses of isolated and nonisolated shield buildings subjected to design basis earthquake (DBE) shaking and beyond-design basis earthquake (BDBE) shaking are analyzed, and three different strategies for controlling the displacements subjected to BDBE shaking are performed. By comparing with nonisolated shield buildings, the floor acceleration spectra of isolated shield buildings, relative displacement, and base shear force are significantly reduced in high-frequency region. The results demonstrate that the base-isolation technology is an effective approach to maintain the structural integrity which subjected to both DBE and BDBE shaking. A displacement control design for isolation layers subjected to BDBE shaking, which adopts fluid dampers for controlling the horizontal displacement of isolation layer is developed. The effectiveness of this simple method is verified through numerical analysis.

  • In this paper a bidirectional DC-DC converter is proposed for renewable energy systems, eco-friendly vehicles, energy storage systems, uninterruptible power supply(UPS) systems and battery test equipments. The two-stage bidirectional converter employing a fixed-frequency series loaded resonant converter is designed to be capable of operating under zero-current-switching turn on and turn off regardless of voltage and load variation, and hence its magnetic components and EMI filters can be optimized. And efficiencies and volumes of the two-stage bidirectional converters are compared according to configuration of isolated and non-isolated parts and a two-stage topology suitable for low voltage and high current applications is proposed. A 12kW(12V, 1000A) prototype of the proposed converter has been built and tested to verify the validity of the proposed operation.

  • Diffraction tomography (DT) is a quantitative technique for high resolution subsurface imaging. In general DT algorithm is used for crosswell imaging. In this study high resolution GPR DT algorithm which is able to reconstruct high resolution image of subsurface structures in multi-monostatic geometry is developed. Developed algorithm is applied to finite difference data and its criteria of application and its limit are studied. Inversion parameters (number of imaging frequency, regularization factor, frequency range) are deduced from isolated weak scattering model. And the usuability of the algorithm is proved by applying to models which break the weak scattering approximation.

  • In this paper, a bidirectional Zeta-Flyback converter is proposed. The topology of the proposed converter is analyzed, which is superposition of bidirectional Flyback converter mode and bidirectional Zeta converter mode in a cycle. The proposed converter allows power flow in either a forward direction or a backward direction. Bidirectional power flow is obtained by a transformer and components. The proposed converter's output is controlled by duty of constant frequency PWM of switch. Compared to conventional bidirectional isolated DC-DC converters, the proposed isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter has high power density and high transformer utilization. To confirm the proposed converter, the simulation and experimental results are presented.

  • This paper investigates the soundness of porcelain insulators associated with the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The AE technique is a popular non-destructive method that measures and analyzes the burst energy that occurs mainly when a crack occurs in a high-frequency region. Typical AE methods require continuous monitoring with frequent sensor calibration. However, in this study, the AE technique excites a porcelain insulator using only an impact hammer, and it applies a high-pass filter to the signal frequency range measured only in the AE sensor by comparing the AE and the acceleration sensors. Next, the extracted time-domain signal is analyzed for the damage assessment. In normal signals, the duration is about 2ms, the area of the envelope is about 1,000, and the number of counts is about 20. In the damage signal, the duration exceeds 5ms, the area of the envelope is about 2,000, and the number of counts exceeds 40. In addition, various characteristics in the time and frequency domain for normal and damage cases are analyzed using the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Based on the results of the STFT analysis, the maximum energy of a normal specimen is less than 0.02, while in the case of the damage specimen, it exceeds 0.02. The extracted high-frequency components can present dynamic behavior of crack regions and eigenmodes of the isolated insulator parts, but the presence, size, and distribution of cracks can be predicted indirectly. In this regard, the characteristics of the surface crack region were derived in this study.
