Stainless steels have been widely used as a building exterior materials in Asian countries for the last decade. It is required for the materials in this field to have an aesthetic appearance, a relatively high strength, and an excellent corrosion resistance. Other metallic materials such as copper, aluminum, and carbon steels have been also used as the exterior materials. Considering the cost of maintenance, stainless steel, having the outstanding corrosion resistance, is replacing other materials in the several parts in the building exteriors. Ferritic stainless steel has been applied as the roofing materials because its thermal expansion is much smaller than that of austenitic stainless steel. Therefore, it is suitable for the large-scale construction such as airport terminal, convention center, and football stadium. To improve the corrosion resistance of the ferritic stainless steels, the modification of alloy composition has been studied to develop new grade materials and the progress in the surface technology has been introduced. Corrosion properties of these materials were evaluated in the laboratory and in the field for longer than two years. High-Cr ferritic stainless steel showed excellent corrosion resistance to the atmospheric environments. In the region close to the sea, the corrosion resistance of high-Cr ferritic stainless steel was much superior to that of other materials, which may prove this steel to be the appropriate materials for the construction around seashore. In some of the large constructions around seashore in South Korea, high-Cr ferritic stainless steels have been used as the building exterior materials for six years.
In order to evade the premature failure of super duplex stainless steels (SDSSs) in some harsh environments, the increase of their mechanical properties is a promising approach. In this study, based on the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique, SDSS matrix composites without post heat treatment were fabricated by using the powder mixture of SDSSs, super austenitic stainless steels (SASSs) and micron-sized TiC particles. Many in-situ TiCxNy nanoparticles were found to be formed by using micron-sized TiC particles in as-built composites, and both fine ferrite and austenite grains were generated. The as-built composites exhibited an excellent combination of high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) (~1066 MPa) and good uniform elongation (UE) (~15.6%), showing a better mechanical property compared with other reported LPBF-fabricated SDSSs, which was mainly attributed to the fine grain, Orowan and dislocation strengthening mechanisms. In particular, the successful fabrication of SDSS matrix composites can set the stage for producing high-performance metallic parts via LPBF technique.
2205 duplex stainless steels have been used for the construction of the marine environment, because of their excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. However, the resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) may be less than that of 316L austenitic stainless steel. The reason why 316L stainless steels have better resistance to HE is associated with crystal structure (FCC, face centered cubic) and the higher stacking faults energy than 2205 duplex stainless steels. Furthermore 2205 stainless steels with or without tungsten were also examined in terms of HE. 2205 stainless steels containing tungsten is less resistible to HE. It is because dislocation tangle was formed in 2205 duplex stainless steels. Slow strain-rate tensile test (SSRT) was conducted to measure the resistance to HE under the cathodic applied potential. Hydrogen embrittlement index (HEI) was used to evaluate HE resistance through the quantitative calculation.
Recently developed TMCP steels, which were manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process, were examined to study their characteristics and weldability. Accelerated cooling type TMCP steel's hardness test result exhibited high value on weld zone. On the contrary, base metal and HAZ exhibited comparatively the similar value. On this experiment result Softening of HAZ is not occurred. in the-heat affected zone, grain size repression be caused by chemical composition properties which a small quantity Al-Ti-B-N. Changing stress ratio near-threshold fatigue crack propagation experiments were carried out. According to this result, crack propagation velocity of the HAZ exhibited slower than the base metal and near-threshold value had increased at the HAZ. Finally accelerated cooling type TMCP steels were exhibited excellent mechanical properties in both strength and toughness.
High strength steels such as transformation induced plastic steel, dual phase and solid solution Hardening have been developed and continuously improved due to the intensified needs in the automotive industry. But silicon and manganese in transformation induced plastic steels were known to exhibit harmful effects on galvannealing reaction by oxide film formed during heat treatment. Therefore, in this work, the applicability of Zn-Ni electrodeposition instead of hot dip galvannealed coating to transformation induced plastic steels was evaluated and optimum electroplating condition was investigated. Based on these investigations optimized electroplating conditions were proposed and Zn-Ni electrogalvanized steel sheet was produced by EGL (electrogalvanized line). Its perfomance properties for automotive steel was evaluated.
Evolution of microstructure due to service exposure to high temperature has a strong effect performance of heat resistant steels. In case of modified 9Cr-1Mo steels, precipitation of $Fe_2Mo$-type laves phases and coarcening of $M_23C_6$-type carbides is the primary cause of degradation of mechanical properties such as creep resistance, tensile strength and toughness. Creep tests have been carried out on pre-aging mod. 9Cr-1Mo steels to examine the effect of pre-aging and stress on the creep strength. Based on the results, a nondestructive procedure, where electrochemical technique that quantitatively detect laves phases and $M_23C_6$-type carbides in a material is used, has been proposed to evaluate a residual creep life of mod. 9Cr-1Mo steels.
Bridges constructed recently are preferred to have long spans and simple structure details considering not only the function as bridge but scenic beauty, maintenance, construction term and life cycle cost, etc. Therefore, they require high performance steels like extra-thick plate steels and TMCP steels. A TMCP steel produced by themo-mechanical control process is now spot lighted due to the weldability for less carbon equivalent. It improved at strength and toughness in microstructure. Recently, the SM570-TMC steel which is a high strength TMCP steel whose tensile strength is 600MPa has been developed and applied to steel structures. But, for the application of this steel to steel structures, it is necessary to elucidate not only the material characteristics but also the mechanical characteristic of welded joints. In this study, the characteristics of residual stresses in welded joints of SM570-TMC steel were studied through the three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analyses on the basis of mechanical properties at high temperatures obtained from the elevated temperature tensile test.
The effect of non-metallic inclusions on the HAZ hydrogen induced cracking was investigated. Quench and temper high tensile strength steels containing various sulphur contents were employed. The sulphur contents range between 0.007% and 0.040%. Non-metallic inclusions were mainly MnS type sylphide and Mn-Al-Si type. The sensitivity of HAZ delayed cracking was evaluated by implant testing. Diffusible hydrogen content was varied by controlling the moisture absorbing condition of manual arc welding electrodes. The one was asreceived condition, the other was dipping the electrodes in the water for ten minutes. The main results obtained were as follows; 1) The results of implant test showed that critical stress increased with increasing S content up to 0.013%. But steel containing 0.040%S showed lower critical stress than that of 0.013% S. These result suggest that there will be optimum S content to prevent HAZ delayed cracking of high strength steels. 2) Under the lower D.H.C. level, critical stress was increased with rolling reduction, but higher D.H.C. level, effect of rolling reduction was not recognized.
