  • Railway vehicles equipped with semi-active suspension system can improve the ride quality of car bodies. Semi-active suspension system is usually applied onto high speed train, and therefore higher running safety requirement is proposed. The influence of semi-active suspension system on safety of vehicles running on straight line and curve line is studied, and the influences of sky hook damping coefficient and system time-delay on operation safety of cars fitted with semiactive suspension system is analyzed. The results show that the vehicles equipped with semi-active suspension system, not only the vibration of car body is decreased, it can also give little influence on running safety of cars, as a result, it will not endanger the running safety of cars.

  • It is expected to confront numerous technological advancements in ter railroad technology with an opening of state-of-art Kyung-Bu High Speed Railroad that permits traveling speed in excess of 300 Km/hr. Expansions of railroad facility such as revival of silk railroad in Eurasia due to the connection of South-North Korea and modernization of rolling stock and ancillary equipment have certainly contributed to the technological development of Korean Railroad. Such technological advancements will provide of opportunities to participate in foreign projects that have been offered in past years. Thus, a comprehensive plan and R&D policy is necessary to continuously raise and upgrade national competitiveness in the railroad industry.

  • A series of field tests were performed to develop aerodynamic characteristic evaluation method and countermeasure technology in conventional and high-speed railway. The strength of rolling stock-induced wind which affect the people and substructure in platform and nearby track were investigated. The slipstream of passing trains was measured by hot-wire array system. The speed of trains was 110 - 125km/h for conventional ones and 300km/h for high-speed ones. The streamlined shape trains cause about 50% smaller-scale slipstream compared to the non-streamlined ones.

  • After the KTX operation Korail has been making great effort to reliability settlement through RCM. Also maintenance cycle and method optimization for normal speed rolling stock field are lively same as high-speed rolling stock. In this paper maintenance techniques for new model electric locomotive are introduced. To find the optimal maintenance method, locomotive inspection cycle for advanced country are examined and other electric locomotive inspection cycle are compared. As a result the present time inspection cycle is totally focusing on safety aspect so the economical efficiency is quite low. Through this research optimal maintenance technique will be accomplished in the end of year 2008.

  • The brake systems of the rolling stocks are generally consisted of electrical and mechanical brake systems. Because of its inherent structure of the each brake system, the electrical brake system is mainly used at the high speed range while the mechanical brake system is used at the relatively lower speed range. It is desirable for the rolling stocks to apply the entire electrical brake system. However, since the brake force from electric brake system is not enough to stop the rolling stock within the legal stop distance. Therefore, the mechanical brake system is indispensable to rolling stocks. In general, the vast majority of the world trains are equipped with mechanical braking systems which use compressed air as the force to push block on to wheels or pads on to discs. These mechanical systems are known as air brake or pneumatic brakes. For the air brake system, basically huge scale air compressor is equipped and the long pipe line is complexively connected. Since mass of these air brake components, it is difficult to be a light weight equipment and the long pipe line raise the maintenance problem. In order to overcome these problems of air brake system, the hydraulic brake system is proposed in this research. The hydraulic brake system makes the whole weight of brake equipment be light and large braking force can be applied. Therefore, in this research, the validity and advantages of applying the hydraulic brake system are reviewed.

  • In this pager, we present IGBT VVVF inverters as a 1C1M propulsion system for electric car. This inverters are composed of high power IGBT's and controlled by compact control units. The control unit performs full digital control by using 32bit DSP and microconteroller. By using CAN-bus, high speed network is constructed within tow control units. The stack is simplified and optimized by using plate bus and IGBT driver units of hybrid-type.

  • Theoretical study has been conducted to clarify pressure characteristics of KTX(Korea Train eXpress) in tunnel. The severe pressure change in tunnel may give rise to the ear-discomfort for passenger and fatigue for car body. The external and internal pressure of rolling stock have been measured by using the running test with atmospheric pressure sensors and portable data acquisition system in high speed train. In this study, the tunnels from 200m to 4000m in length have been chosen for the investigation of tunnel length effects. We found that there are similar patterns of external pressure change for each critical tunnel length. The critical tunnel lengths are governed by train speed, train length and sonic velocity. And, the patterns of pressure wave in tunnel are classified into eight groups.

From the results of experiment, the pattern of pressure change generally agrees to RTRI's experimental result for Shinkansen. • In designing the structures of railway rolling stocks, deterministic methods associated with the concept of a safety factor have been traditionally used. The deterministic approaches based on the mean values of applied loads and material properties have been used as safety verification for the design of rolling-stock car body structures. The uncertainties in the applied loading for the high speed train and the strength of new materials in the rolling stocks require the application of probabilistic approaches to ensure fatigue safety in the desired system. Pressure loadings acting on the car body when the train passes through tunnels show reflected pressure waves for high-speed trains and they may cause a fatigue failure in vehicle bodies. Use of new material technology as body structures also introduces uncertainties in the material strength. A probabilistic approach is more adaptable in designing reliable structures when the pressure waves from the tunnels pounds and new material technology is adopted. In this paper, it is proposed that a fatigue design and assessment method based on a reliability which deals with the loading variations on a railway vehicle due to the pressure reflected in tunnels and the strength variations of material. Equation for the fatigue reliability index has been formulated to calculate the reliability assessment of a vehicle body under fluctuating pressure loadings in a tunnel. Considered in this formulation are the pressure distribution characteristics, the fatigue strength distribution characteristics, and the concept of stress-transfer functions due to the pressure loading.
